In theaters this Friday:
- All the King's Men - ”Rated PG-13 - ”Based on Robert Penn Warren's depression era novel about a corrupt politician in the south, which was already made into an Academy Award winning movie in 1949. The new version stars Sean Penn as politician Willie Stark. Patricia Clarkson, Jude Law and Kate Winslet also star.
- Feast - ”Rated R - ”The result of the final season of the filmmaking competition Project Greenlight. The comedy/horror flick is about strangers trapped in a bar fending off monsters.
- The Science of Sleep - ”Rated R - ”A favorite at Sundance. Gael Garcia Bernal plays a man who often confuses his dreams with reality, something that complicates his life especially when he decides he wants to go after the girl next door.
New DVD releases:
- Gilmore Girls - ”Season Six - ”The sixth season of the show featuring the funny, lovable and quirky mother-daughter team known as the Gilmore Girls.
- Loverboy - ”Kevin Bacon's feature film directorial debut. Kyra Sedgwick stars as Emily, a woman whose parents were deeply in love, but neglectful of her. To compensate, she desperately wants a child of her own. When she finally succeeds, she creates a stimulating world for her gifted son, full of color and creativity. But as he nears school age, and growing independence, Emily tries harder and harder to hold on to the life she built just for the two of them.
- My Name is Earl - ”The Complete First Season - ”Jason Lee stars as Earl, a small-time thief who wins the lottery. Now he is convinced he must make up for all the bad things he's done in his life or karma will get back at him. With list in hand, and the assistance of his brother, Earl is out to make amends, one bad deed at a time.
New CD releases:
- The Captain and the Kid - ”Elton John: A concept album that bookends 1975's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Elton John and Bernie Taupin reflect on their 40 year songwriting partnership. The album features ten new songs including the single "The Bridge."
- From This Moment On - ”Diana Krall: The jazz diva gives us her take on some old standards from ballads to more up-tempo numbers.
- The Dutchess - ”Fergie: The singer for the rap-pop group The Black Eyed Peas goes solo for the first time. The first single off the album "London Bridge" was number one on the billboard charts this summer.
In book stores:
- The Right Attitude to Rain: An Isabel Dalhouise Novel by Alexander McCall Smith - ”A new installment in the bestselling series about Isabel Dalhousie and her no-nonsense housekeeper Grace. Isabel's friends arrive in town with new friends, Texas hotshot Tom Bruce and his young fiancée. Isabel is intrigued by the fiancée's roving eye and Tom's apparent interest in Isabel herself. On another front, she's concerned her niece is falling for the wrong man. Grace and Isabel's friend Jamie warn her to stay out of the two issues and keep her mouth shut. A tall order for the editor of the Review of Applied Ethics when she feels there are ethical principles, not to mention matters of the heart, at stake.
- The Mission Song by John le Carré - ”The bestselling author tells the tale of Bruno Salvador, a gifted young British interpreter who was brought up in Africa. When he is sent to Africa to interpret during a secret meeting between African warlords, Bruno thinks he is there on a peaceful mission until her hears something he shouldn't.
- When Madeline Was Young by Jane Hamilton - ”Aaron Maciver and his second wife care for their two children as well as Aaron's first wife, Madeline, who was left with the intellectual capacity of a seven-year-old after a bike accident. Narrated by Mac, Aaron's son, the book explores life and love in all forms over decades, and several wars, and how all of those factors combined help determine one's ability to love.
