Could Leo’s Film “Blood Diamond” Hurt Diamond Sales?

Analysts are saying it’s possible that Leonardo Dicaprio’s new movie “Blood Diamond” could impact holiday diamond sales. The film, which explores the role of the diamond trade in Sierra Leone’s civil war, has enough star power with Leo to affect public sentiment. In the movie, the “blood diamonds”, refers to the stones that are mined in war zones and then used to fund war and human rights abuses. However, most analysts say that any change in purchasing behavior as a result of the film’stheme is likely to be short-lived. (source)
Here is a great site that offers diamonds with papers.
What do you think – would this movie’s message impact your decision to purchase a diamond?

I will not wear diamonds and find it disturbing that so many people are willing to wear them, without knowing what it takes for those diamonds to reach American stores. Worse still, there are many people who know full well about diamond conflict, and are still willing to purchase or wear conflict diamonds, simply because they are pretty and are representative of status. I’ve seen too many pictures of children with their limbs cut off as a direct result of conflict over diamonds. I hope that more people will learn about the bloodshed that diamond mining has caused (and continues to cause) so they will be more informed about this issue; if it takes Hollywood for that to happen, then so be it. I completely agree with the above post about the need for people to be aware of their impact in choices and purchases they make (likewise, I do not shop at Wal-Mart or drive an SUV, and I would never wear fur). If you don’t know much about this issue, there are many online sources that you can review, in addition to seeing the Leo movie.

I completely agree. We need to take responsibility for our actions and that includes our purchases. We need to be educated buyers and socially conscious of our decisions and the impacts they have on others.

I never understood the desire for gemstones myself. Shame on anybody who thinks they need them to be beautiful.

I dont wear diamonds personally, because of how they get them, and omg what would happen if I lost the article of jewelery. What a waste. Cubic zirconia is cheap and looks the same…….
