Gabrielle Union Calls For An End To Urban Tagging Movies

Gabrielle Union has a new movie coming out for the Christmas season and is angered at the way it is being marketed. She is rejecting the "urban" tag The Perfect Holiday has received insisting that it should just be a seasonal movie. Gabrielle compares her movie to Vince Vaughn's festive comedy, Fred Claus saying no one advertises that one as a "white Christmas movie". I can really see her point here.

"No one calls Fred Claus the white Christmas movie. The Perfect Holiday is a movie about the holidays. It's not race-specific. If there's more than one black person in the movie, it's an urban romantic comedy, an urban thriller - it's just a flipping movie. The way kids think, the demographic they pander and chase - they don't care. The same way guys are like, "Halle Berry's hot, Jessica Alba's hot' - they don't say, "She's a hot black girl' or "a hot Latina'. They notice trends, they buy movies they like, they Google people they like. It's not race-specific... Give me a break. It's an old-fashioned notion of marketing, and how they like to label things."

i agree. whats so unfortunate is that they make it seem that all black people are from urban demographics.

Maybe if she chooses other type of roles, she would be interesting. She always plays the smae kind of role. BORING

i completely agree with her. I would love it if for once a black casted film wouldnt be marketed as urban...i mean what the hell was urban about johnson family vacation...oh, black faces....meanwhile RV? As a black movie lover it is really frustrating to never see black, latino, asian or other cast members NEVER outnumbering white ones in the BIG blockbusters or moving dramas of the year. The sad but true reality is, white people just arent as interested in seeing people who arent white in movies and tv....but those of us who arent white dont have a choice. I wish a white person would actually admit to this. it has nothing to do with other ethnicities abilities to act, you guys just arent as moved by other races or interested in their lives. Hence never seeing Denzel Washington on the cover of the tabloids when he is arguably one of the biggest male movie stars in the country but you have someone from a low rent CW network show on the cover of the tabloid or Rachel Bilson every week.
