Colin Farrell Doesn't Like The Use Of The Word Retarded In His New Movie

Colin Farrell is a little uneasy about the use of the word retarded in his new movie, In Bruges. In it, his character says something about how only "retarded people" could enjoy a vacation in Bruges, Belgium.
"I'm involved with the Special Olympics, so I would never use that word in my life. It's a word that creates denigration and is incredibly harmful. But... my character doesn't say it with any kind of malice or intent or bigotry. He's just very naive and the world isn't as well explained to him as it is to some of us."

In case you didn't know this, Colin also has a son who was born with Angelman syndrome, which affects his motor skills. He says this has made him more sensitive to people with special needs.

I agree. People throw the word around way too casually.

its like the word gay.. some people get offended. I totally respect peoples views on this. My best friend is gay and he takes NO offense to people saying "oh thats gay." But I would not expect all to have the same point of view and we should not expect everyone to be ok with these terms.

awe thats sweet of him! but ya it can be an offensive workd, but i can also see it as non offensive. if your like being intentionally mean then NO its not ok, but if your like oh "i feel retarted today" or "thats so gay" not meaning intentional harm i think its ok. i mean its like saying a curse word, you say it not meaning to.

I do not know about this. Although I agree that many times people use words freevolously, political correctness gets to the point of being absurd. This is absurd. Better education, and learning some manners in a childhood from your parents is much better answer. Are we soon going to have laws banning some words from being said with friends and family and on the internet???? So this political correctness will take us on a path to limiting our freedom. When it comes to speach I am just not clear why we allow reverend Wright to spew hatered yet we try to be politically correct with word 'retarded'. Perhaps Colin Farrell, who I do not consider good actor at all, should call reverend Wright and consult him on a proper behavior. And yes, then make a public statement about it...Well I guess it would ot be politically correct after that....My problem with 'stars' is that many do and say things not because they truly believe in them, but because it is an 'it' thing of the moment. Take Cindy Crawford, posing nude for anti-fur campaing in 90ies. Whithin several years after than she was posing in a fur coat for a designer. After all it is money and popularity that determines what many 'stars' say, not their believes and convictions. How sad!!!!!
