Charlize Theron Thinks We Are All Fluff Obsessed

Charlize Theron is upset that she can’t find more movies with roles for strong women like North County. She has been searching but says nobody is writing those kinds of parts anymore.

“I asked Michael Seitzman, who wrote North Country, “Why don’t you write these kind of stories more; these roles for women?’ He said, “There isn’t the demand for it.’ It’s not necessarily Hollywood’s fault. People don’t go to see these movies. I think it’s a bigger problem. We’ve become completely fluff obsessed.”

Do you agree that the problem isn’t within Hollywood? Or do you think it’s still kind of a boys’ club in the show biz and that’s why women like Charlize can’t find the parts that they want?

She needs to get out in the real world and take a look around. People deal with the dramatic, strong roles as part of their everyday life. Movies are for an escape, not as a reminder of what they have to deal with when they step out of the theater. If she wants a strong role, become a news anchor.

It’s history. When people are going through tough times they generally like escapist and light movies. The top box office movies for last year were Spiderman and Shrek.

If she wants movies made for women why doesn’t she get a production co. like Drew, Jodie, and Jennifer have that makes the films she wants?

She has a valid point. Also, women in Hollywood do suffer from age discrimination as they get older. But Hollywood is plastic city and I have little sympathy for the industry as a whole.

The quality of cinema work coming out of Hollywood is pretty pathetic. Overall, movies generally suffer from lack of quality. My wife and I would see lots of movies regulary but lately, there has been little of anything that I would deem worthwhile.

Yes, I totally agree. It’s just garbage out there. I got a movie gift certificate for Christmas and held on to it until last weekend just because there was nothing worth watching at the theatres. We ended up watching Speed Racer with the kids, which was good fun for them. But yeah, going to the movies is a total waste of money these days, with the quality (or lack thereof) of movies. I’d rather rent.

It doesn’t take much talent to act in a fluff movie. A lot actresses can act a little, but it is mainly their looks is why they are where they are and not their acting ability. There really are not that many talented actresses out there that could star in and carry a good quality movie. Julia Roberts did prove she could really act but she has pretty much given up Hollywood for her family. She probably doesn’t need to ever work again if she doens’t want too. Cate Blanchett is good, Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Michelle Williams did a good job in Brokeback Mountain, I loved Ellen Page in Juno and I think she has potential, just to name a few. However the majority of leading actresses are easy on the eyes but are still only capable of fluff because most of Hollywood is still run by horny old men. Then once you are too old for the fluff movies, there goes your career.

She kind of has a point. I do usually go for the fluff movies. I don’t want to spend all that money to be depressed. I go to the movies to escape and have a night out without the kids. Since I rarely get to do that, when I do, I want to be entertained, pure and simple. I’d pick something like Sex and the City over North Country every day of the week. I’m not ashamed to admit it!

Of course she has a valid point! Hollywood is a money-making industry. Nothing more. Nothing less. They will put out what makes money. What makes money? Movies that people go see. If people would line up around the block to see a Barney the Dinosaur movie, that’s what we would be seeing put out. But people don’t line up for that. They line up for blockbusters, with blood, action, sex, bikinis and whatnot. So, of course, that is what Hollywood is going to put out. The artsy-fartsy flicks may garner the awards but where it counts, the bottom line, it’s the big blockbusters that generate the income. And although I am a 40-something year old mother, I would much rather watch Will Smith fight weird vampires over watching a bunch of middle-aged women wearing designer dresses and Christian Laboutin shoes.

    Charlize….

Here’s a tip about you can get these gritty roles: LIFETIME

If these big name stars are so bummed out that they can’t get a movie made where they look ugly they should just go to Lifetime or WE or Oxygen and they will find them something!!

  9. Heidi says:

Guilty… fluff lover here. With everything going around me that is negative… I love me some sappy love stories (recently watch PS I Love You on dvd and cried like a baby and plan to watch the new Patrick Dempsey movie this weekend), comedy movies (Baby Mama is next on my list), feel good movies (watched August Rush recently and LOVED it), CGI fantasy type movies (looking forward to Narnia: Prince Caspian)… etc… all to escape reality. Just take me away for a couple hours and I can deal a little better when I check back into real life.

Says the actress in the $10,000 dress. They are so smart in Hollywood.
