Bad Reviews For Scarlett Johansson's Album

Uh oh! Scarlett Johansson's Anywhere I Lay My Head isn't doing so hot with critics. In fact, her collection of Tom Waits covers is getting nothing but mediocre reviews.

Rolling Stone (2.5 stars out of 5): "Johansson’s voice is unremarkable and her pitch sometimes unsteady; she’s a faintly goth Marilyn Manson lost in a sonic fog."

Entertainment Weekly: An average "C" grade. Her "expressionless voice" was concealed "deeply in the druggy ambiance".

We've heard a few songs so far. What do you think about Scarlett's attempt to break into the music industry? To see more picture from her album shoot, click here

Whoever told Scarlett she could sing needs to be shot. Her voice is TERRIBLE. Scarlett stick to looking pretty and "acting".

I absolutely agree with you.

They were right. I even like indy music, so I do get it, but she was just, NO. (And I like her, but please stick to acting girl!)

I actually like the music. If you are familiar with Tom Waitts, you'll understand why she approaches the music the way she does. Scarlett has a very good voice (check out her recording of the classic Summertime on ITunes). She approached this musical project with a certain sound in mind though.

I couldn't agree more, i think she did a great job covering Waitts songs, plus the Romans cover was nice too. I enjoy the album!

I seriously hope this starts the downward decline. There are young women in Hollywood (and beyond) with loads more talent than this chick -- and many of them *GASP!* are PRETTIER, too. She's a pretentious, overrated snot. She gets no love from me.

She should stick with acting. I heard some of her songs and while they werent completely awful, I think she makes a better actress than singer.

she is really trying to jeproadize her acting career. people are going to look at her differently because of this. she is such a good actress with loads of potential she didnt need a career in music.

I agree, I like the song that has been realeased, it is different and definitely not mainstream. I was expecting something totally mainstream from her, when I first heard she was going to release an album. So I'm positively surprised. Plus, I wasn't a big fan of scarlett, the release of this album definitely makes me like her more, like I've got a better picture of her now. :)

gill_leigh gill_leigh said:

It serves her well, next time she better leave this to real alternative musicians.

I don't know why these good actresses also feel the need to sing. I mean I really like her as an actress and it's not lke she needs the money.

Passerby Passerby said:

Anybody could do an album of cover songs. If she wanted any industry respect she should have sat down and wrote an album of heartfelt songs instead of ripping someone else off.

Passerby Passerby said:

No duh she doesn't sing well. All these celebrities are losing sight of why they're famous to begin with-or what it takes to get famous. It is based on TALENT, if Scarlett has a talent to act, which she does-stick with that. All these celebs are just trying to get the quickest get-rich scheme whether it be albums, clothing lines, books. it gets so played out after a while

I'm a Tom Waits fan, and I think she has insulted his work. She's trying to be Nico from the Velvet Underground - it's been done. To top it off, those wistful forest photos are truly annoying.

Ever thought she might just enjoy singing? Why can't an actress do something else apart from acting. It's like saying someone who has an office job can never do anything else but work in an office.

stingo stingo said:

I love her album, full stop. Her sound is very fresh. Americans are always oldfashioned when it comes to music, so I am not surprised that she got bad reviews over there. "This is a brilliant album that will no doubt top some ‘best of 2008’ lists," says New Musical Express, giving her a 8 out of 10 rating.

Synt Synt said:

Thanks GOD she is no Mariah! We don't need two of those in the world, one is bad enough.
anyway, Scarlett's voice sucks big time. Her acting also sucks, so my advice is stay out of the limelight girl, find something else to do BEHIND the cameras and AWAY from recording studios.

She sucks at acting and she sucks at singing. Once again a talentless creature who is famous cuz she has big boobs. Awesome.

anonygirl anonygirl said:

I think it's sad that everyone writes this off to Scarlett trying to make money. If that is what she wanted to do, she could have made some god awful pop abortion like Girls Aloud or Mariah Carey (sorry, I know you people love her to pieces but I'd rather shove broken glass in my ears). Then again, that's all most people listen to these days. Groups like that or 'big dick truck ft. giant douchetard'. I am not surprised that no one likes this album. Seriously though, how many beautiful 23 year olds would chose to make an album of ethereal Tom Waits covers?

With that said, I rather enjoy it. I think the effort she put into it really shows. I do not consider it an insult to Tom Waits. My opinion might be a little biased though, I am used to listening to different music - like bands who play their guitar with a fiddle bow and sing in nonsense languages.

I can understand not liking this sound if you are used to modern pop music, but I still say it's wrong to write off what she did as a money making venture.

I'd have been impressed if she took the time of writing a full album or, at least sing brand new songs and not covering the great Tom Waits ! I do love covers only when it's not ruining the original. She should stick to acting.

Of course an actress does have the right to do different things from acting but Scarlett is way better in front of a camera than behind a microphone. It's like Madonna whose films have never been as successful as her music.

ever heard of the concept of Fremdschämen? feeling embarrassed for someone else? Thats how I feel when I hear her pathetic attempt at singing!

Dude, I've seriously been looking for that EXACT definition for, like, a decade. I TOTALLY know that feeling, and it's hard to describe (it's not like schadenfreude, which is what I, personally, feel for Scarlett, because I hate her). I figured that the Germans or the French had a specific term for feeling sheepish over another's actions. Thanks for the new word -- seriously!

Some people get it, and some people don't.

Which is more courageous: Making somthing that everybody expects, or making something you know that most people probably won't get?

Every character she plays in a movie isn't autobiographical. Why is it so hard to extrapolate that to music? The album is a set of songs that have been selected and produced to create a mood. It isn't her saying "I'm going to be a singer now and this is my musical resume."
