Angelina Jolie Is Teaching Her Children French
To honor her late mother, Angelina Jolie is attempting to teach her children French. How wonderful! She claims that French is a second language in their home. I am assuming that means all of the help speaks French as Angelina admits she is learning herself.
"(French is) a second language in the house, although I’m still learning and am not going to attempt any of it here today. My children are starting to speak French, so being here is very good for them and their language."
That is a big regret of mine - not having learned another language (especially since I am first generation American and my entire house spoke Maltese). As soon as my life becomes more manageable, I plan on returning to an adult language class. Have any of you taken one and found success?
A friend of mine and I took Italian for a semester which was really wonderful. But then I got pregnant and was placed on bed rest. Needless to say that ride ended fairly quickly. :( But I loved every minute of it.

It's so much easier for kids to learn a new language than for adults. Good for those kids, I hope they also remember their mother tongue later.
THE YOUNGER THE KIDS THE EASIER IT IS FOR THEM TO PICK UP THE LANGUAGE. MY DAUGHTER SPOKE ITALIAN UNTIL SHE WAS 3 AND THAN PICKED UP ENGLISH SO EASILY. I FINALLY PUT HER IN DAYCARE WHICH WAS 100% FRENCH IN SEPTEMBER. IT TOOK HER 3 MONTHS AND SPEAKS FLUENTLY NOW, BETTER THAN ME TO TELL U THE TRUTH.

It's easier to start learning when you're younger. I learned english and german in school and that was a very good thing. I also learned italian and spanish by my own during highschool. But now I started to learn french and it's a little bit more difficult because I'm not a child anymore. But there's always hope.

First of all she is a liar. Her mother is not French. She is an American...born in Chicago and grew up in Los Angeles. Her great grandfather was French Canadian. However, they are far from French as they couldn't prossibly be any more Americans, they grew up in a bowling alleys that her grandparents owned.
I'm sure it's the nanny that are teaching them French (a little bit, but not much). Funny how she said "I'm learning, but I'm not going to attempt it today".

I always wished I knew a 2nd language fluently. I have thought about getting one of those computer courses you can get at Costco. I love french too, but I think spanish would be more practical.

Why knock it? It's a good thing for the kids to learn. Who cares if it isn't Spanish? There are a LOT of useful languages out there today and saying Spanish outranks them is showing your own ignorance.

I totally agree on that. As I said before: I live in Holland. We get a lot of immigrants here every year who lack to learn Dutch. It is absurd that they do not learn Dutch, because when I move to France I have to learn the language. But what is worse: some time ago they wanted the police in Holland to learn Turkish! WTF?! I can get so pissed over that. Is this the same in the USA and G-B?

I've read all your post and you sound very upset. Instead of getting so upset and having your blood pressure rise; learn spanish. It is so wonderful to know different languages. Take a trip to Spain or Mexico or any other country where spanish is the main language spoken. Next to English, Spanish is the number two most spoken language. It has nothing to do with immigrants coming to America; Spanish is spoken all over the world, just like English. Get yourself some CDs and learn another language; be passionate about something positive , instead of coming to a gossip blog site and sounding like a complete idiot.

If you are really interested in language, there are all kinds of FREE podcasts, especially for things like French, Italian, German-- listen to learn! They're great, and it's never to late to go for it.

Many European's speak more than one language. To be fair, if you work and live in Europe, you need to understand different languagues. American's don't have that requirement here. English is pretty well the only language most Americans need to know, unless you work with people who only understand Spanish. Teaching your children how to communicate better is always a good thing.
How do you say "attention whore" in French, anyway? Better learn that one!

I am a Dutch girl and I can tell you that it is very normal to speak more than 1 language in Holland. This is because nobody in the world speaks Dutch (except for Belgium and Curacao), so we'll just have to learn English at school. We see a lot of American and English programs on the tv so it is not very hard to practice English. We also learn French, German and Spanish at school, but these languages are less important than English. So I really think that it is important to learn a second language, certainly when you live in an European country like Holland.

I have watched an interview with A.J. where she says her mother WAS NOT FRENCH. She says that the press always says that, but it is not true. Her mother had a French name, that was the deal. I have watched the words come out of her mouth, not just read some bogus magazine piece.

I don't really care about Angelina but I'm glad she's learning French, my language. I mean most people in the world speak English (well after Mandarin AND Spanish, would you believe it?), or try to speak English and I'm glad French attracts someone :D Everyone says it's a difficult language so good luck Angelina !
The giving birth in France and learning French to honor her mother rumor is another tabloid lie that has been going on for so long that somehow people believe it's true and that Angelina said it. Angelina has never said either of these statements. When talking about her mother she has always said she was French Canadien who grew up in Chicago. To my knowledge Angelina hasn't romanticized her mother's background but the press has. Maddox goes to a school that teaches solely in French. It's also near most major cities in the world so no matter where they are filming the kids can go to the school. I would assume all of the kids will go there when they are school age.
The Jolie-Pitts are committed to educating their children in Lycee. Both Cambodia and to a larger extent Viet Nam a history of French colonialism so it seems a natural for Maddox and Pax, as well as being tutored in their native languages. AJ even said Zahara speaks some Vietnamese due to her closeness to Pax. There is also a long history of French colonialism in Africa and French is still (somewhat) considered the language of diplomacy.

i was fluent in french till i was 10 and i was better at it than english till i was 5 and now i barely remember any of it. i can understand it pretty well though
i'm glad she's doing that. as long as they dont forget the language. i learned english and spanish when i was small so once i entered high school i took french classes. in fact, i ended up getting a minor in french. but it's hard to practice it when no one around me knows french so i hope i don't forget it. i try watching movies in french haha.
and those who are saying that immigrants who come to america need to learn english, remember the majority are adults and it takes time to learn english. it's complicated...i agree you need to learn the language...of course...but i hate it when in american ppl think everyone should know english. come on! we should learn other languages as well! we get so impressed when someone speaks three languages! in europe that's so normal. we need to get out of our little world and explore.

Vera, I recently purchased Rosetta Stone software to learn Spanish. I love it. I'm far from fluent, but I am having so much fun that I'm going to buy the advanced levels. It's interactive and I can work from home at my own pace. I took French in middle school and did not do well because I didn't try and only took the minimum required. I regret not learning another language now.

Regarding Brad holding the umbrella this is actually not the first time I’ve read people dissing celeb guys for being thoughtful to their partners. I mean she is pregnant! Even if she wasn’t I feel really sorry for you. If you are a guy and wouldn’t think of doing this for your partner or if you are a girl and you think its cool for your boyfriend to treat you like shit. You treat people how to treat you and should not put up with less from a man!

I'm learning Spanish for an upcoming trip. Just playing language CDs in my car during my commute, but it is definitely helping. Not the best way to become fluent, but definitely a good way to begin.
