I know a lot of you were really upset about what Sharon Stone had to say on the earthquake in China and how it was "karma". So you might be happy to hear that Sharon has issued an apology through Dior China and that they will be pulling all their ads that feature the controversial actress.

immediately and stop using Sharon Stone’s image in any advertising,

Sharon herself said,

apologize."

I worked as a nanny for two weeks for a family in Montecito, CA (beverly hills 2.0.) One of the MANY reasons I quit after two weeks (after having my job before that for 5 years) was because the mother was watching a news report about the Tsunami in Thailand a few years back, and she said "I just have opinions about things like this, that its Karma....the people in Thailand have been very evil for a long time." Dior and Sharon Stone must be defended for having an OPINION and for having the freedom to speak one's mind without fear of economic oppression and retribution. I am from Tibet, the thing is not like western people thought, if you don't know the truth, you can come to have a look, if you don't want to come to see the truth, please do not misunderstand this issue! I admit chinese government did something not good before, but that was a loooooong time ago, when my grandparents was young. But they totally changed after that, it become better and better. All the people in china saw the change and we love our government now.

God, I hate this haggard ol' ho. I'd like to think that those who gleefully support the outrageously cruel fur industry are gonna have karma handed to them someday. But I don't think thousands of CHILDREN and other Chinese civilians are directly responsible for the mistreatment of the Tibetan people. Freedom of speech is bitchin and nobody can deny this dummy's right to say just about whatever the hell she says. BUT with freedom comes responsibilities. You have to be willing to accept the consequences for what is said. Nobody threw her in jail for gods sake, they just said, "sorry honey if that's the way you feel, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split you." She had her right to voice her opinion and did so. Dior had a right to cut her off and they did so. No rights were violated in this case. Those people in China have their rights violated on a daily basis and they don't need her adding insult to injury with her Karma comment.
Agree with most of what you said. But I don't feel I have my rights violated on a daily basis here in China. In fact, I have all rights you have, with the only exception of not being able to choose my leader (in fact, I can read all news websites from the West and get as many perspectives as I want). But then, how important is an election to most Chinese, especially when considering that fact that in the West you only get to choose in a narrowed-down field between candidates who have already been pre-selected by the powerful lobby groups and who work for these lobby groups. I prefer a government who is going to jump and do everything to save me when a disaster hit.

With Sharon's comment, it wasn't so much voicing her opinions that bothered me, what bothered me was that it reflected the way she thinks. It's got nothing to do with freedom of speech, if she had made that comment about a similar tragedy in a democratic country, the public would still react the same way.
When I think "freedom of speech" I think about people ahead of their time, or highly insightful contributing to the world in some way. If freedom of speech only lead to dumb, cold hearted and ignorant comments like these, then give me censorship anyday.

At some point, I agree with her. If you do something bad, it would come back to you eventually. Some people have the same opinion as hers, but they just don't say it because they are afraid of what people think of them or they know that sometimes not to say what you think is a smart way. Now China is getting a lot of support from overseas, I hope this will change their atitude and make them realize that being nice to other people is what they can do to return.

We admit Stone's rights to utter her opinions, same as people here voicing their views. What we are condemning her is not whether Stone has the freedom of speech, is whether she has a heart.
I don't like communism also, but I have to say something about Tibet. I travelled there twice, and talked with many of the tibetans. Before the trip, I also heard Chinese government had massacre there, millions of tibetans were killed.
I was a bit worried before my first trip, since I thought China was a dictatorship country, and killing people at will. But it proved I am wrong. People there are really enjoying the policies, they can have as many children as they can, but Han Chinese can only have one child. tibetans go to school for free, but Hans are not. .... so Many things. And tibetans say they never heard about massacres.
I was curious that if there were really millions tibetans killed or massacred by Chinese government, why there's no single picture or video to prove that?

From what I know of this situation, Sharon Stone basically asked a rhetorical question about whether or not something like this could be related to karma. Why does that make her a bad person? It's not like she made the disaster occur. Many people believe in karma and she appeared to be pondering the reasons why bad things happen to good people. Does no one else see that this was just one person's comment about the situation and that it probably was intended to carry more meaning for her as a way to process the event? People say things when they are trying to understand the terrible things that happen in the world. Unless her comments had the direct impact of keeping people from helping China recover from the disaster, I'm not sure why she's not permitted to voice an opinion. It was a very stupid statement Sharon Stone made at an age over 50. We always say people become wiser as they grow older, but obviously she is not one of them.
I believe most of the people here do not know China much. So I welcome everyone to visit China and get to know our daily lives. Check out the history of Tibet and how they live their life today and then make a comment.
Ordinary Chinese are not interested in politics. Although I do have a lot of complains about our government agencies, corruptions, poverties, etc., I do not see any other one who can do better than the current government. The government is making effort and making progress to improve in all fields.
I met some western friends chating with me on internet. They all will mention something about socialist or communist. For me these are just words from politations. Ordinary Chinese people really don't care if it is socialist/ communicst/ capitalist or anything else. but we do care if we are living a better life than before.
