Brokeback Mountain: The Opera

You hear about a lot of stories getting turned into Broadway shows…but an opera? That’s a new one! UsWeekly is reporting that Brokeback Mountain will be made into an opera, premiering in 2013.

The New York City Opera commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose a show
based on the 1997 short story – which was turned into the 2005 Oscar-winning movie starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.

It might actually be a good way to bring a new art form to the masses. People who wouldn’t normally go see an opera might check it out because of the popularity of the movie and of Heath.Would you buy tickets?

It would definitely depend on the style of the music–has anyone heard anything by Charles Wuorinen? I don’t know him. The only modern opera I’ve enjoyed was “Margaret Garner.” All the others are just too hard on my ears — I guess I’m not cutting edge enough….

man i failed to watch this movie… i tried so hard but i just couldn’t, so there is no way i could then stomach it as a Opera, just not my thing at all
