Dr. Drew Criticizes Tom Cruise, Tom Strikes Back

More Scientology criticizing in the media…Dr. Drew Pinsky called it cult like and speculated on why Tom Cruise joined the religion. In return, Tom’s lawyer fired back and compared Dr. Drew to the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

Dr. Drew said,

"A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental
illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma,
without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be
drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me,
that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect
in childhood – maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect."

And Tom’s lawyer responded saying that Dr. Drew is an "unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for
notoriety," adding,

"The last time we heard garbage like this was from
Joseph Goebbels."

Dr. Drew isn’t unqualified though…he does have an actual medical degree, practices and teaches psychiatry.

Regardless of the criticism, is it ever ok to compare someone to a Nazi?!?!?Then again, was it ok for Dr. Drew to call Scientology a cult?

  1. Passerby says

He called it a cult because it is a cult. Dr. Drew better watch his back Soc is known for deceptive tactics in payback.

  2. Passerby says

Dr. Drew was using Tom as an EXAMPLE! He is a trained medical professional and if it has been his experience that people who were abused/neglected as kids often turn to “cult-like” followings, it is his right to say it. It is absolutely ridiculous to compare him to Joseph Goebbels-that is just wrong.

  3. Jen says

It is called a cult because it is a cult huh? How informative..

What makes Catholicism and Islam religions but not cults?

  4. Passerby says

It’s called a cult because it encourages isolation from friends and family and encourages (and sometimes demands) total assimilation to the group. They charge for their services and put people into indentured servitude. That and the founder admitted it was a ploy to make money. Many times.

Last time I checked, you could be Christian or Islamic and still speak to those with differing beliefs.

Also, any organization that so obviously fears and loathes psychological services is in no way shape or form on the up and up.

  5. xy mom says

This is what I am waiting for. I am waiting for a definition of a cult that doesn’t include most religions. I don’t agree with the beliefs of scientology but I do not believe it is a cult. I always thought cults were groups of people who took people away from society and made them live outside of the “world”.
I am not arguing one way or the other, I just want someone to make sense of the term cult.

  6. xy mom says

An honest question – In what way does Scientology encourage isolation from friends and family? With so many high profile people as members, wouldn’t that make them breaking the “rules”?

  7. Smurfette says

Dr. Drew has a right to his opinion just like everyone else does. Scientology is a cult and if Tom doesn’t want everyone thinking he is a crazy idiot, then he should quit believing in aliens and have his wife, Katie, reprogrammed to be normal again. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then it probably is Tom Cruise representing his scientology cult. Katie should have ran while she had the chance. Now it’s too late.

  8. concerned mom says

Dr. Drew is very astute and has every right to say what he said. Look how you speak Tom, what about that videotape? Everyone knows Tom was abandoned by his father and was neglected, left with anger issues and a learning disability.
Also, doesn’t TC have a BROTHER ?? So where is he ? Isn’t that an issue. Your father abandoned you and ironically you are the legal custodian of three non-biological children. Are you trying to be the father you didn’t have?

  9. Nanea says

I think a board certified addiction medicine specialist is better qualified to point out someone who has some sort of disorder than a lawyer who doesn’t know his history. Anyone who saw those official $ciento tapes knows Cruise is not quite right in his head. Of course a couch-jumping actor who has his family chauffeured around in a hearse is so much better qualified to help people in accidents etc. than a doctor. *rolls eyes*

  10. ScientologyISACULT says

To the person who asks if it is a cult, yes it is, and see above, it does encourage people to isolate from family, etc like the person said above. And This cult is doing illegal things as you asked. They do plenty of illegal things and there is a very good site on all the things they have done. This site is rickross.com It tells all about all kinds of cults and scientology and about Tom cruise ,etc. It tells stories about people trying to leave the cult and not being able to and finally succeeding in getting away., If you read about it on this site and come back and are still not convinced, you never will be.

  11. lis says

It is a cult. You’d have to argue very, very hard (and very, very well) to convince me it isn’t. By every definition I’ve ever seen of either, it’s a cult. And if you want to be in a cult, that’s fine by me, just don’t make me join it.

I do think it’s a bit immature for Tom’s side to respond like that. If the Dr. is actually a real doctor, he’s certainly not unqualified. I would have chosen different words. It comes off as ignorant and combative.

  12. mimi says

Why go calling Dr. Drew a nazi when plenty of other people have criticized Tom and has never responded in this way. IDIOT!! Maybe what Dr. Drew said really got to him.

  13. Me~ says

    cult Definition cult (kult)

a system of religious worship or ritual
a quasi-religious group, often living in a colony, with a charismatic leader who indoctrinates members with unorthodox or extremist views, practices, or beliefs

devoted attachment to, or extravagant admiration for, a person, principle, or lifestyle, esp. when regarded as a fad the cult of nudism
    the object of such attachment
    a group of followers; sect

  14. Passerby says

Dr. Drew – PLEASE be careful when you open your mailbox, there may be a snake in there one of these days!

  15. Ali says

Politely butting in here. The term used in scientology whereby people are encouraged to severe ties with non-believers, aka those who do not share their beliefs, is called disconnection. It is practiced and enforced among members of this “religion”. As for the reason people call scientology a cult, the answer for that is as easy as reading the definition: Cult – typically refers to a cohesive social group devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture considers outside the mainstream, with a notably positive or negative popular perception. There is a lot of information to cover on Scientology, far too much to simplify in a comment here, do a google search if you’d like to know more. But be prepared, some if it is quite difficult to believe.

  16. Redken says

Religion/Cult it doesnt matter. Bottom line is that Scientology is harmful and the only reason it hasnt been shut down is because lots of famous people are on it. I dont care about the Xenu part. For all intents and purposes, other religions sound like made up stories anyway. But Scientology practices brainwashing techniques and they prey on the weak. Also, they are all about money. If you arent rich/a celebrity they make you pay for sessions or even quit your job to work at the scientology center. The easier to control your life. Its madness, and more dangerous when they force their kids to become scientologists. Nicole Kidman, save your kids from Tom Cruise!!

  17. Passerby says

So Dr Drew is “an unqualified television performer just looking for notoriety”. I guess that makes Tom Cruise and his choice to be so out there with his membership of the Scientology cult “an unqualified movie performer just looking for notoriety”. Remember his comments about Brooke Shields when she bravely came out about her battle with post-natal depression? Was Mr Cruise qualified to comment on how Brooke overcame her illness with the help of psychiatrists and antidepressants? Cruise’s very public involvement with the cult has backfired on him and damaged his career, hence the recent bombardment the public received via Oprah Winfrey trying to convince everyone he’s just a normal family man. Comparing the doctor’s comments to the likes of a notorious Nazi like Joseph Goebbels is nonsensical. He must really have pushed one of Mr Cruise’s most sensitive buttons. And yes, according to every definition of the word “cult” I’ve read, Scientology more than qualifies.

  18. Passerby says

Jen, you are really misinformed. Scientology was founded by L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer. It is not based on a particular deity. You may not agree with Catholicism or other religions..but Catholicism is based on the worship of God. Scientolgoy is a cult where people are controlled and forbidden to leave under the threat of blackmail.

  19. Passerby says

scientology is a cult not a religion. everyone knows that.
it is ok for dr drew to make such comment.
anyway tom cruise is such a famous Scientologist that anyone can use him as an example.

    So the point is

  20. Passerby says

    A scientologist’s lawyer calling someone a nazi!!
    Come on scientologist are dangerous.
BE CAREFUL Dr Drew.Hire some bodyguards now.You are in danger.

  21. Passerby says

what’s the big deal here? of course scientology is a cult. and everyone knows cruise is mentally unstable. it’s not as if dr. drew is saying anything shocking here.

  22. Passerby says

    cult (plural cults)

    1. A group or doctrine with religious, philosophical or cultural identity sometimes viewed as a sect, often existent on the margins of society and/or exploitative towards its members.
    2. Devotion to a saint.

    scientology is a cult….
    Definition according to secular opposition

Secular cult opponents tend to define a “cult” as a group that tends to manipulate, exploit, and control its members. Specific factors in cult behavior are said to include manipulative and authoritarian mind control over members, communal and totalistic organization, aggressive proselytizing, systematic programs of indoctrination, and perpetuation in middle-class communities.[30]

While acknowledging the issue of multiple definitions of “cult”,[31] Michael Langone states that “Cults are groups that often exploit members psychologically and/or financially, typically by making members comply with leadership’s demands through certain types of psychological manipulation, popularly called mind control, and through the inculcation of deep-seated anxious dependency on the group and its leaders.”[32] A similar definition is given by Louis Jolyon West:

“A cult is a group or movement exhibiting a great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea or thing and employing unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control (e.g. isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individuality or critical judgment, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of [consequences of] leaving it, etc) designed to advance the goals of the group’s leaders to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families, or the community.” [33]

In each, the focus tends to be on the specific tactics of conversion, the negative impact on individual members, and the difficulty in leaving once indoctrination has occurred.[34]

I DO know for sure that you need to pay to get into xenu’s spaceship one day :)

    Katie holmes anyone?

3)the focus tends to be on the specific tactics of conversion, the negative impact on individual members, and the difficulty in leaving once indoctrination has occurred

    sounds like tom cruise

  25. Passerby says

OF cOURSE it is ok to call the Scientology a cult. Did you ever read any of their nonsense?

  26. Passerby says

have you seen any videos about this? journalists get harassed and followed, its creepy. people die. look it up on youtube! it certainly is a cult. Ron L Hubbards background is very disturbing, His son had mental issues and killed himself, not to mention how racist he was. This can all be found on youtube

  27. melissa22 says

Well Tom is either a really big asshole or a really big liar cuz he has publicly admitted that he indeed WAS ABUSED AS A CHILD. And he was also ABANDONED by his biological father so needless to say Dr. Drew is not totally off the mark on this. Tom either has to suck it up or retract his statements about being abused if they indeed are not true. I cant stand when people pull the abuse card like its nothing, that shit really fucks people up, its not something to be taken lightly.

  28. Carmen says

Scientology IS a cult. Dr Drew is a really good doctor and made an insightful observation that hit a sore spot for the crazies that are a part of the Scientology cult.

  29. Jen says

Well, it Dr. Drew was surely very unprofessional in his behaviour i.e. a public diagnosis of Tom Cruise, no matter how crazy people think he is and how ridiculous his religious beliefs seem to be. And of course, Tom’s lawyer was unprofessional too when he compared him to a Nazi…

Vera, what’s the difference between ‘cult’ and ‘religion’? They surely have similar meanings…

  30. Donna J says

Scientology is most certainly a cult and it doesn’t take a trained professional to see that something is clearly wrong with Tom Cruise. Why is it that when someone speaks their minds they are considered a Nazi or politically incorrect?

  31. Passerby says

i know it’s strange to hear him immediately say something like ‘abuse’ or ‘neglect’, but most of the time, he’s correct..of course, that’s MOST of the time..not all..if you listen to his radio show, he’s really good at figuring out what’s wrong from what he knows about you and suggesting help for the person..

  32. Mama Mo says

This is hilarious to me…How did he even diagnose Tom? He was simply comparing…

Scientology believes that psychiatry was made by the nazis anyway, and thinks its evil and ruins peoples lifes so OF COURSE their gonna get all bitchy and mad about his statement, but get the hell over it. If I was Tom Cruise I wouldn’t have said ANYTHING about this…He’s such a freaking cry baby!!!

p.s. Dr. Drew is SOOOOO damn hot hahahaha

    <3 Mama Mo

  33. Memmers says

What insane person will admit that they have a mental illness. I love Dr. Drew, his show is fantastic and he has great compassion. Why did Tom’s lawyer give a statement after Dr. Drew’s comment but never released a statement when it was someone else’s comment. Things that make u go Mmmmmm.

  34. Jen says

The point is not whether Dr. Drew was correct or not. Did Tom Cruise ask for a public diagnosis? Clearly, no.

To all those who say Scientology is a cult: What makes it a ‘cult’ exactly?

  35. says

Oh I love Dr. Drew!! I’ve been a fan of his since the 1980s when he did a radio show in L.A. called Love Lines on KROQ!! He’s been around forever and is very legit.

  36. Passerby says

it IS a cult for chrissake! they brainwash people and make them spend all their money on it. that’s got cult written all over it

  37. Just Asking says

Are these people tax exempt? And if so, WHY? Watch out Tom, SP’S are everywhere. I also read that today may prove to be a very interesting day for those that follow scientology as I am remembering that Anonymous is supposed to do something on the sea to a special Scientology owned vessel. Could be some real drama afloat soon.
