Keri Russell and her son River were photographed grocery shopping the other day in NYC. We just saw Keri in that same hat a few days ago and I have to say I'm loving it more and more each time I see it. Don't you think Keri is the epitome of cool and casual?
At what age do you stop having to use the sling? I was thinking of getting one for my one year old so I can handle him while running around after my daughter at the pool??? Is he too big? He fits in 24 mos clothing.Â

Vera, stop toying with us. Fashion find on that hat, please!
I say put down the sling when the little bugger is just too heavy. I tried to wear my son as much as possible- Keri seems to be doing that also. My son just got too heavy and seriously I think it took a good year for my neck and shoulder to recover!!!
Love her!
here slings are only available until 9-12 moths. but the sling keri is using looks big, so i'll assume they exist for older babies too.
Your son is one already? Wow, seems like just a week ago you were going through such a tough pregnancy!
If you think you can carry your son in a sling without causing yourself any neck/back problems, then go for it. Anything that makes life easier has to be a good thing!
A sling/carrier can be a lifesaver. The one Kerri has is made by Ergo. It can be used for a child up to 40lbs and can be used either on the front, hip or on the back. I have one and love it and because it is not cutesy looking, my husband also uses it. I would highly recommend it!
Shouldn't he be facing forward though??
The Ergo that Kerri is using is incredibly supportive and you can front, side or back carry a little one up to 40 lbs very comfortably. Other carriers, like wraps or mei tais can also be used up to and in the case of wraps beyond that weight. North Americans need to get hip to good baby carriers - not baby bjorns (ugh! so bad for your back and useless after 16 lbs).
I think there is a weight limit of 20-25 lbs, but maybe they make them for older kids. Try the Leaps and Bounds/One Step Ahead website
And no, he shouldn't be facing forward. Facing forward while being worn in a front carry is not actually good for baby's spine.
I carried my daughter in an Ellaroo mei tai hip carrier until she was over two years old, but it only has one shoulder strap which was limiting as she got heavier. I liked the hip carrier a lot, but I think if I were to do it again, I'd get something with two straps for long walks. My daughter is two and a half now and I still end up carrying her a lot (without any carrier) because I got so used to being free of the dreaded stroller. It drives my mom crazy, though -- "make that girl walk!" On the plus side, I have one really strong forearm. :)
LOVE her hat.
Why don't you check out www.thebabywearer.com ? As long as you have a carrier where your child's body is really close to yours and your child's knees are above his butt while seated in the carrier AND the carrier fits you comfortably, you can carry your child for a long time, well beyond the first 2 years.
