Alanis Morissette Likes To Keep Things Room Temperature

Alanis Morisette has an unusual fear... a fear of air conditioners. The singer thinks that they are the cause of illness and has experienced getting sick from them in the past to prove it.

"I refuse to go into rooms with air conditioning. People think I’m some sort of diva because I won’t even put a foot into a place if the air con is on. It’s not about being a diva - it’s about my health. Within a matter of minutes of being exposed to air conditioning, my body goes into meltdown, and within three hours I’ll contract laryngitis and won’t be able to speak, let alone sing."

What does she do in the summer? You can't do anything then... shopping, movies, dining, doctor visits. Air conditioning is a part of our day to day lives. This is crazy!

I second that texas comment. She must smell great and be a hoot to hang out with.

Gross. I'm the exact opposite. My body shuts DOWN in the heat. I've spent most of my life in the Deep South, and let me tell you.... it makes me crabbier than he11 to be a sweaty and hot.

Okay, dyinggiraffe, I am totally with you. That is *exactly* what I was going to say. As I sit here (in Texas) in my bathing suit in my 73 degree house, having just come inside from the scorching heat.

I think Aretha Franklin will NOT perform if the air is on.

You know, I don't think it's that crazy... in my house we have central air so it's okay but my first year of college I used to get really bad colds because we used to put the ac on all the time and it's one of the ones that blows directly into the room. I normally don't get sick mind you.

I like air conditioning if it's comfortable. I hate it when people crank it up and it feels like a freezer. You end up putting on a sweater, which is annoying.

Not at all- this is a condition that's on the increase - some people have a physiological intolerance to air-conditioning and get physically sick as a result of it-
I know because I suffer from exactly the same thing - and like Lanis I get a cold or Flu if the tempreature is really low and also Laryngitus-
It only affects a portion of the population -but seems to be on the increase-

There's not enough research in it- but it could be allergy related..
What is strange is that we are trying to save on fossil fuels and global warming - and yet no one seems to have cottoned onto the fact that Aircon uses as much fuel as heating-
and should only be used when the outside temperature is above 24- below that buildings need to have some form of natural ventilation, which is healthier if the outside air is clean and requires less maintenance.
It makes sense and its better for people and the planet and company purses..

That's a bit extreme. I have a similar problem but not to that extreme. I found out that the problem is that if there is dust or other particles in the air conditioning ducts it affects your breathing. I can never have ac on in the car because it is a small area and it makes it harder for me to breathe with all the particles in the air.

Passerby Passerby said:

yeah I hate when people crank the air condition. It's not really healthy or good for the environment and can you imagine how much money you can save if you didn't have it on so much??? People should only put it on when the heat is so unbearable and get too humid.

AC is NOT just "part of life" in coastal Southern California. I do not have AC at home or at work. If alanis lives in L.A., I'm sure she gets by fine without AC. Yes, the South (and east coast, an Midwest) is UNBEARABLE in the summer. That's why people move to California ; )

She's not the only singer who hates air conditioning - it does effect the vocal chords and sinuses, although she does go one step further doesn't she?

PS - Jennifer Lopez is the same way, she refuses to be anywhere where there is a/c. She'd rather sweat.

I totally agree-
I'm not a Diva- jsut an ordinary office worker - but I hate overdone aircon- it makes me miserable and ill and I work much better without it-
I would also rather sweat- but best of all I'd rather work with fresh air - which isn't laced with everyone's germs and viruses-
the only time I've loved aircon is when there's been a heatwave in England - ie temperatures got above 25 degrees C.

i absolutely HATE air conditioning and where i live it can get up to plus 40c and humidex 34c but i cant stand being in a cold room or have any type of air or wind on my face.

Passerby Passerby said:

She's right about the air conditioning. I've never been able to tolerate buildings or vehicles with the air conditioner on...it makes me feel so nauseous I just wanna die. I get a terrible headache and feel weak and dizzy, too. Who knows what it is? Micro-organisms in the filter system? Whatever...it makes me feel really ill and the longer I'm exposed to it, the longer it takes me to recuperate from it. And I'm talking hours for short exposures, and days when it's longer. One time I actually hurled, so now I'm more careful.

Actually, this is not weird at all. I live in Europe and Europeans don't really use AC. The mall in the nearby city does not have AC and all homes in Germany do not carry AC units. You can buy a portable one, but rarely are they used. I think it goes back to the climate here and how it is usually only warm in August. Sometimes I can become unbearable, but I've been here 2 1/2 years and you grow accustomed to the heat.

I also live in central Europe. Coming from the US and having AC everywhere, I was a bit surprised when I arrived. But the houses and buildings here are made from cement and they really stay much cooler than houses made from wood. Plus the climate is usally a bit cooler than in the midwest where I'm originally from. Some days it gets pretty hot, especially in my office, but most of the time, we jsut turn on a fan and it's quite comfortable. The car is another story! I make my bf have the air on for long distances.

We have A/C at work but we usually start by opening the windows on both ends so we have a breeze coming through! If it gets too hot we put the aircon on for an hour or so but usually it gets too cold after a while so we turn it back off.
