Gael Garcia Bernal Has Been Mugged Several Times

Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal has admitted to being a victim of crime in his native land. The Motorcycle Diaries star says it's just not worth it.

"It’s just sensible. What are you doing to do? Fight back and get knifed? It’s probably something that many men do not admit. I don’t mind saying that it’s happened so many times and I always feel scared."

"My problem isn’t more important than anyone else’s, just because I’m an actor. And I’m also not afraid to say that it is more of a problem in Latin America."

I've never been in that situation... but odds are I would not put up a fight either. I have to say I respect Gael's honesty.

Many many years ago... When i was only four yrs old , my mom and i were taking a walk around the neighbourhood and parks, then this guy jumped outta nowhere and tried to take my moms hand bag, i think he had a knife or something with him. My mom, being the supermom she is didn't let go of her bag and was in a tug of war stalemate... He tried to stab my mom's hands (she still has a tiny scar). But, she never gave in. It was so scary for me at that time that i still remember it clearly even today... I ended up screaming soooo loud, that people nearby came and scared the guy off... My mom still has the bag i think, but, its really mangled... Its kind of a souvenir she kept.

NOTHING but protecting your children or another human being is worth fighting back for. Just give them your wallet or purse and run. All that crap is replaceable, lives are not.

I was mugged last year, I was 15 and I kicked him in his b*lls...then I bolted. It was a lot funnier than it sounds. My brother and his best friend were attacked by three guys about 5 years ago. It was really dramatic, they were playing hockey and the 3 guys wanted their shoes and stuff, my brother and his friend hopped over the side of the hockey rink and bolted down a back alley in their skates. It still makes me laugh.

I also think that in situations like muggings etc. u react instinctively, whether its to run, fight or freeze...

I've been mugged twice and I live in Santiago, which is supposedly a lot more dangerous than Buenos Aires, so I'm not surprised... Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff :)

I think you don't know how you will react until you are in that situation. Fight or flight? It just depends on you mood at the time. Although I try not to think about it I was mugged by three machete wielding manics in Mozambique. After it happened I couldn't get out of there quick enough. If I feel uneasy remembering it, I tell myself that the guys were probably very desperate, and they would have considered me to be a rich westener who had more than them and I wouldn't suffer financially from their actions. I guess on the face of it, that is true. But the fear; sheer terror, I felt is something I will never forget, and even now when I am out certain situations still make me feel uneasy.

A friend of mine got mugged and the crap beat out of him in Mexico City a couple of years ago. he's really short, as this actor is, and I think that might be one reason they got picked on. Plus you shouldn't walk around a strange city by yourself ever. I don't know why he decided to do it, at night of all times.

He is a great actor he comes out in a movie called" The Crime of Padre Amaro", it was a big deal in Mexico when it first came out. I loved him in that movie. Another great movie is Amores Perros (Love's a Bitch) that was very good movie. Oh, he also came out in the movie Babel W/ Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett .
