Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know Is About David Coulier

Am I the only one that didn’t know this? I understand the song is old, but I just had to post this. I mean, JOEY from Full House?! Going down in a theatre? Are you thinking of me when you … ?

JOEY?!

Yes, I’ve been under a rock. But for those of you who have comfortably been sharing the space with me: Alanis Morissette wrote ‘You Oughta Know‘ about David Coulier from Full House. Read the lyrics with this new information and see it in a whole new light.

Here he is talking about figuring it all out himself.

"(When I first heard the song) I said, ‘Wow, this girl is angry,’And
then I said, ‘Oh man, I think it’s Alanis.’ I listened to the song over
and over again, and I said, ‘I think I have really hurt this person.’"

"We saw each other and hung out for an entire day. And it was
beautiful. It was one of those things where it was kind of like, ‘We’re
good.’"

"You Oughta Know"

I want you to know, that I’m happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I’m sure she’d make a really excellent mother

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn’t able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you’d hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you’re still alive

And I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I’m not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn’t able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you’d hold me
Until you died, til you died
But you’re still alive

And I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

Cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
And I’m not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back
I hope you feel it…well can you feel it

And I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

This is OLD OLD OLD news! I didn’t know that there was anyone left on that planet that didn’t now this! =D

  3. Jan says:

lol yup I knew it and was just as shocked as you are. Is this a current pic of him? Hes looking good !

EDIT – and I forgot to say, OMG that has to be the BEST scorned woman song ever !

  4. CapturingLife says:

It may be old news but he was just talking about it in an interview, which is why it’s “news” again. I’m like you Vera, I had no clue. LOL It’s hilarious, though, because he is NOT someone I could imagine her with! And that HE cheated/dumped whatever. Yes, Jan, THE best scorned woman song ever!! :D

  5. Anonymous says:

DUH! What rock have you all been hiding under? Not that he isn’t using it for publicity…..but *DUH*.

  6. Anonymous says:

It was old news years ago. How is it that you missed it? *lol*

  7. Melissa.H says:

#1 – their relationship is old news and the song’s old, but this was a recent interview, and if you go on any other celebrity gossip blogs its on all of them this week. #2 – totally with alanis on this one.

  8. Riviera says:

Wow, well, I must be one of those people living under a rock because I didn’t know either. And to the person who said this was from Alanis’ angry CD, well that’s totally wrong. Most of the songs from that CD are positive and optimistic: “All I Really Want”, “Hand in My Pocket”, “You Learn”, “Hand Over Feet”.

  9. Hentai Lover says:

All this time I thought she said “crossed eyed bear that you gave to me”

    Learn something new.

  10. gretel says:

I didn’t know, but I’ve never even seen full house. I LOVE that song.

  11. Amy says:

Would she go down on you in a theater? interesting! Actually that is more info than I need regarding Uncle Joey. Who knew?

  12. Anonymous says:

    It’s “Head over Feet” =)

  13. Stephanie B says:

Indeed, very old news. It is funny how many people haven’t heard this before though. I do think it is odd that he is just bringing this up again now. Weird. When I originally heard about this I could not fathom Joey from Full House (it’s so funny how many ppl call him Uncle Joey because that wasn’t his name haha almost everyone I know calls him Uncle Joey) could be the person the song was referring to. So crazy.

    GOOD JOB
NOW FIND OUT WHO THE WOMAN WAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. zaoli says:

Crawling out from under my rock to say, didn’t know either. Uncle Joey!

  16. mynameisstolen says:

“Of the cross I bear that you gave to me”

Did he give her herpes. I wonder…..

  17. Kris says:

seems like 1/2 of us didn’t know. It’s not like it was on the 5 o’ clock news!

  18. smack says:

Holy crap this is ancient news, I heard about that when the album was released in 1995! It was creepy then and is creepy now, Full House was the WORST and I think Joey may have been the worst of the worst.

  19. Anonymous says:

I had no idea either! I love that song =)

  20. Anonymous says:

Well I don’t think we live under a rock, for those who didn’t know. People actually have things to do and don’t hear every piece of gossip. At first it was surprising, but nothing surprises me anymore.

  21. dave says:

Welcome to 1995! You’re so cutting edge! You’re only 10 years behind my grandmother with this news, and she’s dead.

My god, you’re a gossip blog? Kill yourself now.

    • Cheryl says:

      Hey Man,

This is getting nasty even if the thread is old. Not everyone sits around and follows celebrity news. Plus, I heard that this was about someone else that did a response with a song. From two people that say they heard it on the radio. Sometimes, it is not the person that is alleged to be the object of the song. We don’t know. So I think it is rude to make nasty comments and tell people to kill themselves. I guess a lot of people are under rocks. Something else. I came here to look for the song of response. LOL on the stupidity!

  22. gia says:

ech…yes, indeed i did know this & had somehow been trying to block it out…maybe he was hotter back in the day…not that alanis is hot anyway.
they are both kind of blech.

  23. Anonymous says:

    really really old news.
I remember watching the interview when ‘You Oughta Know’ first came out/

  24. Anonymous says:

he DEFINITELY was NOT ugly back then, that’s fo’ sho’.

he was actually kind of hot. I always thought so. still is actually.

  25. From under rock says:

Say it ain’t so! I had no idea. She could do SO much better. I think she’s a genius and probably a little nuts, but love her. Him, not so much. Thanks!

  26. Van McGee says:

When the song came out I heard that he was one of the top 3 suspects. But then I heard that the song was definitely about him. I saw him years ago at an outlet store in Palm Springs. He was looking like your typical suburban blob. And I thought “Really?! The song is about him?!”

But he’s looking good in that photo.

  27. greeeneyedwhwoman says:

Yep, I knew this but was Really Shocked when I heard about it! Odd combo to me!

  28. xy mom says:

Seriously laughing out loud at that!!!

  29. Booyah says:

That is what I always took that to mean. Old, old news. Now if one of them admits which permant STD the “cross” is, then that should be news. I assumed herpes.

  30. Liz says:

I guess she perhaps fell in love with his character not how he looked.

  31. I like the valuable info you supply on your articles. I’ll bookmark your blog and take a look at again here regularly. I’m quite sure I will be informed lots of new stuff right here! Good luck for the next!

  32. Catherine says:

I’m with you Vera! I had no idea, but remember listening to this song in high school and thinking – yeah she’s pissed

  33. Sweetfeet says:

You def are not the only one in the world who didn’t know. I was playing rock band and we were playing this song and my sister told me. I said “Are you kidding me, I started laughing.” I was shocked-seriously-first that I had never heard that-what planet do I live on :) but also that it was about Joey from full house.

  34. mymiddlefinger says:

David is re-hashing this to get publicity. This news came out years ago before Alanis started dating Ryan Reynolds.

  35. Mandi Lou says:

Honestly I can’t ever remember her saying yes or no…I thought it was always just an unconfirmed bit of gossip.

~~ Word to Your Mother ~~

  36. OMG.. I had no idea. I LOVE this song. When I’m in my angry “female dog” mood, I always put in this CD.

I was just telling my daughter about this song, and about Alanis’ stage in life when she was an angry girl. She is a passionate woman, I love that you can feel that in her music.

    Thanks for the info!

  37. Kris says:

well i didn’t know either. JOEY?!?? Well god. I wish it was someone hotter she was singing about. Changes my outlook on the song. But LOVE her!!

  38. Danyell20 says:

Really??? You people didn’t know that?? I thought that was just common knowledge by now. lol.

  39. Anonymous says:

OLD NEWS. lame. everyone knows this already.

  40. Anonymous says:

*yawn* this is really old news…..

  41. iowa girl says:

haha, Vera you MIGHT just be the only one. It’s ok though, seriously…are we really in the “need to know” about this? I truely would rather know who was “so vain” in Carly Simon’s song. She swears it’s not Warren Beaty – so who?

  42. an answer says:

“You’re So Vain” was about James Taylor. He was very cocky, very arrogant, and he hurt Carly Simon big time.

  43. Bex says:

I didn’t know either- and I’m glad you enlightened me!!

    Joey- how rude!

  44. Mich says:

I had NO idea and I’m a huge Full House fan!! so random!

  45. Anonymous says:

“You’re So Vain” is about Warren Beatty.

  46. Anonymous says:

i had no idea!!! lol wowwwww

  47. Ciara Michelle says:

There’s an episode about her revealing the meaning behind “You Oughta Know” to Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. It’s hilarious.

  48. Mizz Thang says:

Yawn. Old rumor. She’s never confirmed it, and puh-leeze. One whole day? I doubt that; most women are smarter than that to fall in love in just one day and be THAT angry. He probably just really screwed her over, and who wants to be known as THAT guy, the guy who is such a jerk he inspired you oughta know? Makes it hard to find dates, I’m sure. Or, perhaps she was a minor at the time and he didn’t want to get busted!
