Victoria Beckham Sues Rag Over Diet Pill Claim

British magazine Now has made a false claim that Victoria Beckham uses diet pills. She was so upset about the piece that The Spice Girl is now suing the tabloid. They even brought in Victoria’s sister saying she is the one supplying the pills to the mom of three.

Beckham’s agent Jo Milloy says,

"The accusation is dangerous, defamatory and blatantly untrue. Victoria takes her position as a role model to young women very seriously and is horrified by this hurtful, fabricated story.
"It is now with her lawyers."

What do you think about celebrities suing rags for false stories? Should it be done more often? I feel like it isn’t done enough.

Hey, I would sue too if I was her. All that hard work starving or eating tiny tiny portions and then they say she lost her weight the easy way by popping pills? How dare they! ;-) LOL But seriously, yes, I would sue everytime something wrong was published about me. That’s why you have lawyers!

    YES

Celebrities really SHOULD sue more often.

If the story is a fake teach them a lesson. They are in the business they are in – FOR THE MONEY – hurt their bottom line and you are garunteed to see a difference! (:

Yes, they should sue more often!

Part of me thinks that celebrities should sue every time a false story is printed, but another part of me thinks that they should let it go.

    Life is too short.

Then again I guess it depends on the story, and if it will hurt people close to the celebs?

    Basically ……. I don’t know!

I think it’s too easy for publications to print things that are flat-out false. I really think there should be a clearer line between a “news” outlet and a “gossip” outlet. It’s one thing if a magazine says “We hear so-and-so has been doing XXXXX because a little birdie told us”, it’s a completely different one to say “So-and-so IS doing XXXX.” – it presents it more as fact than speculation. And I’ve noticed a lot of magazines doing this lately.

I think that celebs should sue when whatever is printed truly compromises who they are or what they stand for. If the celebs are going to be told that they are role models, etc., then we need to let them stand up for themselves and say they may not represent something that we think they do. Too bad there’s no way to sue without involving money because we all know that’s not what it’s about. I know that if I had young girls looking up to me, I wouldn’t want them thinking I am thin because of diet pills if it’s clearly untrue. I think that in the last few years, the media has become so censored in one respect that we seem to be going off the deep end whenever possible to compensate for that… it’s crazy. The real problem is that, in the States, it’s SO hard to prove slander, libel, etc., making it that much easier for people to print what they want. Sue on celebs, sue on.

oh, so besides the suing thing…
if she cares about being a role model for young girls, maybe she shouldn’t look anorexic

  9. gia says:

yes, suing by celebs is great…i am more shocked by the suggestion that Posh considers herself a role model to young girls!! what has she done lately? unbelievable. she lives off of edamame & lettuce & water & maybe a multi vitamin, she wears only the most expensive clothing & contributes practically nothing to society & she could do so much using her celebrity status… if i had a daughter who looked up to her i would be horrified.

Whenever mags make claims about serious illnesses like anorexia, it’s dangerous. People really throw around that term way too often. They don’t understand the seriousness of it and use it like some sort of insult about physical appearances.
I think it’s great that she sued. I don’t agree with sueing left and right like Americans have a reputation for, but it seems that these mags think they can publish whatever they please and that’s destructive.
