Since both of them have changed---is it possible that they are just trying to change their image as more common and approachable? In Katie's case it could just be long rehearsals are more comfortable without $1000 outfits.

I'm digging Tom's Nike "Air Lifts"...he's probably got 2 inch insoles also! They're actually the same height with Katie scrunching down like that.
I may not be a big Tomkat fan but they really seem happy together and devoted to their family. They are gorgeous but there's nothing mean about them unlike many stars that are so stuck up and mean spirited.

She doesn't look THAT bad as long as you 1) don't think about how she used to look/dress, 2) don't think of how young she is versus how old she looks, and 3) don't think about her religious views, her husband or her personality change. Compared to the average woman she looks normal.
Maybe she just wants to be comfortable or is more focused on her little girl right now. Or maybe she just doesn't give a **** anymore. Ya know?
Its called being comfortable and for once she is also relatable and normal than her usual elegant million bucks outfits. Im sure she also wants to fit in with her Broadway costars and not walk in during rehearsals like a diva with her prada and Chanel outfits. I read that she even wants the same dressing room as the rest because Broadway wanted something special for her but Katie didnt want any special treatment.
anybody who wears high-heels with their swim suit (Packer wedding) or dresses like a princess in Paris doesn't care about comfort -- oh and wearing high heels after the NYC marathon.

I like when Katie Holmes is all dressed up for the red carpet. She has become so sophisticated, but I have to admit sometimes she dresses well beyond her years. Elegant but she's under 30! The swimsuit and heels was totally not her, and sometimes her "casual" clothing is just too older looking on her. She is totally pretty but stop chopping off that hair and throw on some Abercrombie & Fitch digs once in a while during the day!
Tim Gunn is from Heidi Klum's Project Runway. I think Katie's style of late is to demonstrate she's comfortable in her own skin. ( trying to dispel rumors of her unhappy life with Tom). Any ugly jeans will do that.
