Helen Mirren Admires Today's Confident Youth

Helen Mirren Admires Today's Confident Youth

Helen Mirren has an interesting reason for admiring young people today.  She's impressed with their ability to tell each other off.

'Times have changed,' she said. 'I hate young girls going around
beating each other up, but I love the fierceness of young girls
nowadays, and the way they just say, '**** off', because I wish I'd
been taught to say '**** off' when I was younger. I wish I'd had those
words in my arsenal of self-defence.

'Instead, I was polite and
didn't have the courage to say that to men who wouldn't accept "no" for
an answer. I was very innocent when I went to college in London. I went
to a convent school and had never spent a night away from home or gone
to parties or any of that.

The actress also made some extremely controversial remarks about rape, talking about her own experiences with date rape and how she doesn't think those sorts of cases should go to court.  I'm not going to post the full quote on INO, but you can read it here.

Colin is so great. And he is so real and honest. He is DAD of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brad "The Botox" Pitt always needs a support. It is Angelina. Or there are the children. But he can not do more. It can not promote film without support. Stupid Americans! Only show but no content! Brad "BOTOX" Pitt is the Obama of the film!!

Geez, which young girls is she talking about? Is she crazy? For the most part, today's youth are arrogant, carry no responsibility, are self-centered, have no structure, wander around acting trashy and have no direction in their life. It's extremely frightening for our baby boomers because these individuals are their future!

She's a beautiful woman, aging gracefully, but her date rape remarks, in my opinion, are really about how she has chosen to survive her experience.

rape is rape

simple

I will probably get blasted for this..... I agree, rape IS rape. However, IMO, there is some validity to her statement that when a girl goes up into a guys room, takes off her clothes, makes out w/him, etc... And THEN decides no??? No DOES means NO at whatever time you choose to say it, but take some responsibility for getting there in the first place! Stay OUT of the boys room, do NOT take off your clothes, etc, etc. Do NOT go there in the first place!!! Be smarter than that. Educate your daughters, sisters, friends, etc to be smarter than that. Don't put yourself in the position if you never intend to go through w/it. We as women (girls, etc) have a responsibility to keep ourselves and our bodies safe. I think Helen was just drawing a line between putting oneself in a risky position verses being pulled off the street and forced with a gun to one's head or whatever. I'm speaking from experience (not the being pulled off the street part). I think most girls have been in similar situations. Just be sure to take responsibility for your OWN actions!

...........going by your logic, to the above poster........

if we take responsibility for our OWN actions........

doesn't the MALE have to take responsibility ??

To me, there just isn't a grey area with rape. I don't care if the woman is naked and performing oral sex on a male, if she says no.........then its no

The MALE should be able to control his sexual urges and be able to make the RESPONSIBLE and RESPECTFUL choice.

I'm a survivor of rape as is one of my daughters so I have very strong feelings about this.

I agree with Momster!.... i dont think rape is EVER ok.... but education of girls on how to avoid this is paramount. It goes without saying that men should be held accountantable for rape, but without the girls/women taking some ownership of their 'dangerous' behavior (ie, getting plastered drunk, taking off their clothes, getting a man aroused and then saying 'no')... then girls will never learn to be more diligent.

I've had many a drunken night and just cringe at how close i could have come to being date raped, luckily i wasn't... but i am going to teach both my daughters the dangers of putting yourself in bad situations.

That being said... a rapist is a rapist is a rapist and i dont agree with Helen that they should 'work it out between themselves'... what possible resolution is that..

Sounds like Helen could use some psychotherapy.
