Kate Beckinsale Balances Work And Career

Any mom knows how hard it is to balance family and everything else in life.  But, Kate Beckinsale seems to be one of those women who does it all effortlessly.  She says the only bad part of her job is being away from her daughter for weeks on end.  When asked how she makes it work this is what she said:

"She [Lily] has two fathers, and two sets of grandparents and iChat. I put her to bed every night and had breakfast with her every morning
and went home almost every weekend, so I think the key is not to be
away for longer than five weeks."

The only thing that suffered were Kate's sleeping habits.

"We got through it pretty unscathed. It's a struggle, you know?," she confesses. "Sleeping is what goes by the wayside."

Rod Lurie, also a parent, who directed Kate's last film said:

"I must say Kate is very inspirational to watch with her parenting," he
says. "Every candid photo we have of Kate, she's texting her daughter.
It's unbelievably lovely and sincere."

Lily is only 9!  What a young age to be texting...but I wonder if she only uses her phone with her mom.  How old were you when you got your first cell phone or how old is your child going to be when you give him or her one?

I got my 11 year old a phone last year for a few reasons - a) she is in a ton of sports and wanted to make sure she could get ahold of me if something was cancelled, moved or missed b) she could communicate with her Dad (my ex) without me having to be involved in the process and c) it's relatively inexpensive for her to communicate with her friends and family whenever she wants! ...not to mention having one more thing I can ground her from. muhahaha ;)

Wow...my parents sure were old fashioned. They spoiled me, but I had to earn it, so when I was 16 I tried my hardest to do everything right and then I got my cell phone. Kids nowadays are too advanced for me, I mean I am only 21, but the things that young kids do today I sure was not doing them at that age. When I was 9 I was playing with Barbies, not texting.

WOW! A cell phone...I didn't get one of those until I was 18 or older!! The big rage when I was younger was having a pager or beeper! LOL I tried & tried to get on from my parents & they refused! "Pagers were for drug dealers" so they thought! BOY how times have changed! And I'm not that old :)

Hahaha...Pagers were for drug dealers! I remember that! My boyfriend in high school had a pager - because his family had money and it was very 'showy' for him. Not a drug dealer, but I remember people making comments to me about that!!! LOL thanks for the trip down memory lane!!

When i was younger ( darn, i'm old - so pre cell) we used pay phones to call home. They were everywhere, even in schools. So even without cells, there were phone conversations from schools, malls, rec centers.

When was the last time you saw a pay phone?

It makes a cell for a pre-teen almost a must. In our family, we are talking 12 - or middle school. (and definitely with a gps tracking option, heh)

The child does NOT have "2 fathers." She has one father and one stepfather. Just because Kate can't stay with the father of her child does not negate her ex-husband's fatherhood, nor does it mean her new man is suddenly the child's "father." Sheesh.

Wonder how Kate would enjoy hearing her daughter has 2 mothers? Hmmm?

I am pretty old fashioned. I just got my first cell phone when I was 24. I am 25 now. I only use it to call family members if I'm going to be late or for similar circumstances to that. I never use it for chatting purposes. Only those closest to me have the number. I don't like the idea of being available for just anyone to reach me 24-7. I had a co-worker whose 7 year old child had a cell phone and phoned her all day from it. I think 7 is way too young for that! Plus cell phones and other media items are incredibly distracting in school. My husband teaches high school and every kid has headphones on or is texting, etc. He bans all electronics from his classes and they go berserk because they can't handle being torn apart from their gadget of choice. Times have really changed and, like I said, I 'm only 25!

Boy am I getting old. LOL. My first phone was a private landline at the age of 13. We used pay-phones at school. Did not get a cell phone until the early 90's and then it was a bag-phone. A bit hard to carry around. We just got rid of the landline in the house but still have 4 phones between the 2 of us. We both have cells, I have OnStar in my car and then the Vonage for my business. I would say when a child can show responsibility to not abuse the privilage. Moxie, I like the idea you can use it to ground her. My cousin does that with her daughter and takes it away at night.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to balance family & work when you have enough $$$$$ to pay for help. She should get an award.

I think being away from my 10 yr old for five weeks would kill me. If it was once, fine. but throughout her whole life, kind of sucks.
