Crystal Detox Gains Cult Following In Hollywood

Crystal Detox Gains Cult Following In Hollywood

Be honest, when you heard about Beyonce's liquid cleansing diet (recap: cayenne pepper plus lemon juice plus maple syrup equals lots o' time spent "detoxifying" in the bathroom), did you think it was entirely healthy??   I know that the label "cleansing" has been added to that moniker, but we all know the ultimate goal is to be slimmer!!  So what do you think about the new installment in Hollywood's quest for "cleansing" (i.e., "quick and easy way to look thinner before a big event"): detoxifying crystal bath salts?

Celebs like Kylie Minogue (love that show-stopping black dress!), Sophie Dahl, and Sadie Frost have been frequenting SpaceNK boutiques for their $85 Ina Cyrstal Bath Salt treatment, which, with a blend of 84 trace minerals, claims to provide the benefits of a three-day detox diet by:

...entering the body and pushing out toxins through your pores."

Jeez, isn't that what your vital organs are for??  I hate to be a devil's advocate, but here's what a professor of environmental toxicology had to say about all this!:

It's true that the body can excrete toxins with perspiration.  But the magnitude of toxin removal via perspiration versus the liver or kidneys is relatively minor."

(Hmmm, for some reason, I don't think that will shorten the waiting list at SpaceNK!)

I would try it, in a heartbeat. I do two hour tubs with epsom salts, does much the same I think. I have also done the beyonce detox, it worked. I couldn't drink the lemondade sweetened with the maple after I added ceyenne pepper, so I got ceyenne pepper tablets instead. You drink a cup of smooth move tea in the morning, and one at night. The cleanse rocked. I didn't do it for the diet, although I lost 23 pounds in ten days. I did it because I had bowel trouble. I had multiple addhesions, and had a colonoscopy first. I had innards like a phone cord, not good. My six pound dog couldn't sit on my lap without making me cry. It gave my organs a break, now I go to the bathroom regularly instead of once a week, and my abdomen is now longer sore or tender. The part that is never listed is after the detox, you need a colonic to do it the right way. The first day was hard, the second easier, the third was easy and so was the rest of the week. But when the detox started on the end of the first day, sick, sick like the flu feeling, fever, nauseaus, just awful. Took a nap, woke up feeling great. I did have energy, and my skin never, ever looked better. I hear lots of folks who try this stick to whole foods after. I never felt better in my whole life after that first initial wave of the detox clearing out.

i would think these detox "things" are another version of colonics that may help those with little pooches appear to have a flat stomach. as long as its not dangerous or that your bowels get used to it (like what happens with laxatives), then go for it.

There was an article in Skeptics a few months ago about the fact that your body removes toxins just fine on it's own, and most commercial detoxes are a scam. I would guess there's just some water weight loss that makes people feel temporarily that they've lost weight.

yes, your body was created to remove toxins on it's own. it was also created to eat fruit and vegetables off of trees and out of the ground. as well as fish from the sea and any other natural, unprocessed food. it was not made, however, to handle all the chemical and processed foods that we put in out bodies today. aspartame anyone? if you were extremely strict and stuck to a totally organic diet you would still need extra help detoxing because you are surrounded by pollution. yes, our bodies are strong but, no, they were never intended stand up to all the things we have invented to put into them that make them weak.

as far as the "master cleanse" (beyonce's "diet"), it was discovered by a man named stanley burroughs and he wrote a booklet that is very informative about the benefits of this particular cleanse. you can get it at barnes and noble for like $5 or find it on the web for free. until you read what it actually is about, your opinion has no weight because you don't actually know what you're talking about (no offense intended but it's true). you'll find this cleanse is much older than the idea of hollywood stars starving themselves to fit into a size 2. it's all about health, not being skinny. just because some people have misused it, doesn't make it bad. i have personally done the cleanse, usually 10 days here and there but one time i made it to 28 days. the benefits i experienced are too many to list here. let's just say that because of my personal experience, i know it's a good thing and not a fad.

these people have entirely too much time on their hands. Average healthy adult does not need any of that detoxifying. Celebrities are so toxic due to their huge egos and narcissism I hardly doubt ANYTHING can cleanse them.

it's called the master cleanse and it is not about loosing weight.

every single person i know who has done the master cleanse was not doing it too loose weight, just to actually cleanse their body. loosing weight is only a side effect. my friend mary did it for a whole month and did loose 15 pounds, but that is not what she was trying to do.

I think these celebs are just saying they use these sorts of diets just to get some press coverage - all news is good news and no news is bad news sort of thing. Actually, thinking about it they probably don't use these "amazing new" detox diets at all - but the press just associate their name with them to sell magazines. Am I being synical?
The enviromental toxoligy prof is right - your body is pretty good at detoxing itself all by itself - to improve your ability to detox, put put so much bad stuff in your body so it doesn't have to work as hard to get rid of it.
Love the blog :o)

Detox bath contains minerals small enough to penetrate the cells and be absorbed to help the body expel internal toxins accumulated over time through pollutants in the air, alcohol and processed foods. The White Gold Crystal and the detoxifying essential oils of basil, fennel and juniper cleanse deeply whilst improving the sense of well-being.
