Paris Hilton's Repo! The Genetic Opera Gets Terrible Reviews

Paris Hilton's Repo! The Genetic Opera Gets Terrible Reviews

Looks like Repo! The Genetic Opera is getting slammed by movie critics. And made slammed isn't as harsh as a word it needs to be.
Los Angeles Times critic Mark Olsen wrote, "The film is bad - not good-bad, tacky-bad or fun-bad, just plain awful and nearly unwatchable. It seems the production has had to cut around the ubiquitous Paris Hilton, as she is never glimpsed in anything but brief, fleeting shots and her hoarse bark of a singing voice is used as little as possible."

Oh wait - there's another one. The San Jose Mercury suggests the film is "as bad as it gets", adding it’s "easily one of the worst movies of the year, if not all time."

Well, it came out this weekend. So who's seen it? Is it as bad as they say? I find I never really agree with critics.

I won't be seeing it -- I will not fund her lifestyle in any way, shape or form.

Are you still going to see it, Vera? You first.

I saw clips on youtube and it seemed kinda campy. So, if the critics hate it, maybe it'll become a cult classic. haha. I've never seen any of her movies but I just might rent the DVD when it comes out to kill my curiosity.

Usually I like the movies the critics pan. I might rent it, but then again if Paris is in it, I may not like it. I am curious tho.

I'm not a fan of Paris, but this is starting to become ridiculous: people trash everything she is in, wether it's bad or not. As for me, I'll be watching the movie, because I'm a fan of the genre. Paris is in it? Whatever, the movie is not only about her. Get over her.

What I meant was, the type of movie Paris would probably be in might be a little too juvenile for me. I'm not into the types of shows geared towards teenagers or the younger crowd. Like Hannah Montanna and High School Musical are just not my thing. Has nothing to do with Paris personally. But since I know absolutely nothing about this movie, I am curious about it.

She's never gotten rave reviews over anything she's done. Her CD was a flop in sales and charts and her clothing line it's selling rapid fire either. The only remote success she had was with The Simple Life with Nicole Richie. She is just not a good actress.

She is good as Amber Sweet in Repo the Genetic Opera. Almost all of the earlier reviews of Repo gave Paris positive reviews on her role as Amber Sweet. These reviews came out after the Repo premieres in Montreal, Toronto, and Austin TX. Even user reviews in IMDB are very good for Paris. Thats why these new reviews are so surprising, why they are so venomous in their criticism of Paris.

the whole point of this movie is that it is meant to be a cult classic. maybe the bottom line is that you cannot intend for your film to become a cult classic, because the truly awesome cult classics were released as serious films to begin with. I heard an interview with the director on NPR and he even admitted that was his intention.

Must be some critics. Are they there to criticise Paris or the movie?

I'm not her fan or anything, she's a person, I'm a person and there are worse people out there than her.

If some of us don't like her, or want to watch her, so what? Why take it so personally? I really don't need a lecture on who I should like or not, ok? This is a gossip site, if you don't want to read gossip and opinions, maybe it's not for you.

thanks so much for that. i don't come on this site to be preached to.

I saw it last night and I loved it! A lot of the songs were really catchy. I usually listen to techno music and not rock, but as far as hooks and melodies go, I thought it was well written (to be fair, I would say maybe 1/3 of it was really cheesy). It's probably destined to always be a cult classic.

I will admit, I'm a huge Paris fan, but that's not the main reason I went to see it. I'm majoring in biotech at SF State, and although the movie paints a very tangible (albeit, extremely unlikely) version of a dystopian vision of the future, it does deal with problems facing this current generation, especially regarding the current "golden age" of biotechnology as well as people left to deal with inferior genes.

I felt the main themes were deep philosophical issues of death/dying vs. immortality, power, money, how far people will go to feed addictions, and the complete corruption of science through capitalism...

Great review! Of all the Repo reviews, you are the first who talked about the science or genetics part of Repo the Genetics Opera ! And you also mentioned the songs used in the movie and the bleak future world that was painted. You seem to have understood the theme of the movie better than the mainstream movie critics. Congratulations.

dgoodness, thanks for the great review! I probably won't see it, but enjoyed reading your post. I'm not a Paris fan, but am a huge Paul Sorvino fan, was he good in this?

I thought so! His breakdowns are pretty convincing, although I'm not sure if it's really him singing, or if it's dubbed over. The only other movies I've ever seen him in were Romeo & Juliet and Bound, so I'm probably not the best person to ask :)

Ouch. That's a terrible review, but with a name like "Repo, The Genetic Opera" it was doomed from the start really, wasn't it? :)

whatever. ppl come on this GOSSIP site to post their opinions about different 'celebs.' if you can't handle the fact that not everybody is going to like who you like then just don't read them. critics get paid to offer their opinions on certain films and records, they won't just say something is bad because they don't like who is in it. paris is a joke; therefore, anything she is in is a joke. she has no discernable talent that i can see. people, who actually have talent, break their back to make it into the industry that she was just born into. she is just an over price heidi. the only difference between the two is money.

Dozens of positive reviews about Repo the Genetic Opera have been published since July when it premiered in Montreal, Austin, TX and Toronto, you can read them all on IMDB. All focused on the plot, acting, and the soundtrack and in general came out with glowing reviews for the movie and the actors, including Paris . The new reviews that came out the past two days were all negative, and focused mostly on Paris Hilton and not on the movie. The gist of the reviews seems to be because she is in the movie then the movie must be no good. But Paris is only one of several good actors in the movie, she is not even the lead actor. Its Alexa Vega, Anthony Head, Paul Sorvino and Sarah Brightman. Anyway, most of the earlier reviews said that Paris played her limited part very well and should be commended.

If your going to cast no-talent paris then your asking for doom. Paris will go around the rest of her life thinking everyone is jealous of her and she thinks she has talent, always starving for attention. When in reality the public looks upon her as a never ending joke!! At least most of us just about turning 30 do not act and sound like we are 14!!!

Paris wasn't so bad in the movie. She really didn't bother me much.

The Movie itself, was a flaming piece of crap :(

Maybe the worst movie I've ever seen.

It's literally painful and exhausting to watch. It's just that bad, lame, cheesey, boring, not funny.

I really wanted to like it too.

honestly, i loved it. I think it's going to become a cult classic. It's one of my new favorite movies.

If you have seen the trailer, then you will know if you'll like the movie. I loved it! Truly, the women (Paris, Alexa Vega, and Sarah Brightman) were the highlights and were all wonderfully cast. The little "skip" Paris does when her daddy lets her get another surgery is priceless, and I cannot see anyone but Paris pulling it off so well! Also, though Paris' CD may have tanked, she actually has a fantastic voice. She wasn't used to her full potential here, but she is used enough to hear that she knows what she is doing.
