PETA Responds To Maggie Gyllenhaal's Fur Pics
Hot off the press - this is the exact email I received from PETA a few minutes ago responding to the fur piece Maggie Gyllenhaal wore to the Moma Film Benefit:

PETA likes to give everyone, celebrity or average Joe, the benefit of the doubt that any fur that they might be wearing is totally faux. So after seeing pictures of Maggie Gyllenhaal in her latest fashion risk, PETA contacted her rep for a simple confirmation that she wasn't really sporting the body of a dead animal. Unfortunately, we've received no response.
Considering the fact that Maggie has aligned herself with a number of "green" charitable projects, it would be ironic and obviously hypocritical for Maggie to be draped in fur—the product of violence and environmental degradation.
Of course, we still hope to hear from Maggie that her vest isn't as vile as it seems, but if we don't, we can only assume that Maggie has joined the likes of the Trollsen Twins, who are known for routinely wearing real fur.
We’ll certainly let you know if we receive a response.

Yeah, shame on us for not endorsing an organization that throws buckets of red paint onto children at amusement parks; who applauded the attempted bombing of a disease research facility that used animal testing (and later said that if killing one animal could cure cancer, it would still be a heinous and unacceptable act); that financed the legal defense of the man convicted of the aforementioned attempted bombing and later helped him start a lecture circuit that encouraged violence and vandalism; and best of all, euthanizes thousands of animals in its own shelters every year because all their money is spent on frivilous commercials and publicity stunts rather than on food and shelter for said animals.

Actually, Ellie- i used to wear a ton of fur and loved it. rabbit, mink, fox, you name it! and i HATED peta so much and thought they were a bunch of useless jerks. then i saw eva mendes (who is SO beautiful!!!) speak out against fur because she used to wear it and saw one of PETA's undercover videos about fur and became anti-fur. If it weren't for that PSA I saw, i'd still be contributing to animals being skinned alive by wearing their fur.
i don't judge anyone who does still wear fur, but i give props to PETA for being around to expose those industries who are cruel to animals.

Who cares if it's real or fake? I certainly don't. I am proud to be a meat eating, leather wearing carnivore. While PETA may think the creatures that the furs are made from are all cute, cuddly and innocent...they are actually vermin that breed at will and will eat each other and their own young if the need arises. I am vegetarian, but I do understand people eat meat. I do, however, oppose how terribly animals are treated in slaughter houses and corporate farms. Wearing fur is not like eating meat. PETA are so extreme in their tactics that they undermine all of the "good work" they purport to be doing. I have no respect for them.
That said, I wouldn't wear fur -- real or faux -- because it's just not my style. I have no problem with others doing so.
I agree they are extreme and like Greenpeace they are so off-putting with their tactics it just turns people off instead of endearing them to their cause. I'm a proud PETA member. PETA is the only animal charity that is not out there trying to win friends. They are on the front lines and going undercover to work in slaughter houses and fur factories so that the public can see the truth about the animal cruelty they support in the products that they buy. So annoying or not- PETA has some big balls for going into those places and exposing them for what they are!

Thank you PETA for being there to bring my attn to celebrities who promote wearing fur! Since celebrities live and die by the goodwill of people like me (e.g. folks filling the $eats to watch their movie$/tv $hows) they SHOULD know that A LOT of people think it's totally UNCOOL to wear fur. It may be very hard to find a pair of shoes that are not made of leather or animal-product, it may be very very hard for someone to be a vegetarian/vegan -- but it's pretty damn easy to avoid wearing fur. A simple way to not contribute to a living creature's intense suffering.

Your choice to be heartless but if you are saying it just to get at people who "threaten" people like PETA, then that is dumb. There's a difference in killing an animal humanely for meat, and doing what they do for fur. Not all farmers are doing the meat thing humanely nowadays, but a lot of times if you buy organic meat you are more guaranteed that the animals are treated more humanely. Also, some regular meat has things on it that says "animal friendly" which implies they do things humanely.
It amazes me that people will care so passionately for animals...and have no compassion at all for human beings. Who would wish death or torture on ANYONE, or insult someone's child because they MIGHT be wearing real fur.
I am not a fan of fur-wearing, and certainly think people should be educated to understand why they shouldn't...but treating it as if it were the same level as, say, child abuse or rape, is irrational and reading some of these nasty, vicious posts makes me more sympathetic to fur-wearing people rather than those who fight against it.

The sad thing about peta is that they have succeded in spreeding a message that is a basicly a lie. Skinning animals alive is obviously not o.k., but looking into it, the socalled 'documentation' that the whole fur industry is skinning animals when they still breath consists of the same video from China years ago - recorded several years ago. That does not mean that every single animal is skinned alive.
Now peta can have their opinion on wearing fur, but their real agenda doesn't stop there. If peta was in charge you can wave goodbye to leather goods, pets, milk and honey and the like.

I don't see any conflict with wearing animal furs and commitment to a more "green" life. For centuries people have eaten animals and used their fur for clothing. It's part of the cycle of a green earth. The synthetic fabrics that so many wear, are made in factories that pollute our air, environment, and earth. Since when does killing an animal pollute the air? It's bones and body decompose and nourish the earth. I, personally do not wear fur, only because I live in a very warm climate. Your argument makes absolutely no sense to any logical human being. Keep wearing your synthetic shoes, accessories, and clothing, and pretend you are "green." You aren't. What many people don't realise is that most of the fur that gets exported to the West comes from China. Now this is where the problem lies:
1.) China has no animal welfare laws whatsoever.
2.) Among animals such as foxes, raccoons and mink, they also skin dogs and cats alive. You may think it's an urban legend, but it is completely true. Just Google 'chinese fur trade' and you'll see for yourself.
3.) The dog and cat fur is marketed to the West as faux fur/rabbit fur/fur with exotic sounding names.
You might be wearing a coat that contains dog fur and not even be aware of it.
4.) The barbaric Chinese fur industry is going strong as we speak and it won't stop until people STOP BUYING FUR in the name of vanity.
6.) China skins up to 2 million dogs and cats every year.
7.)China is the biggest exporter of fur globally.
