Nia Vardalos Adopts A Young Girl

It's been several months since Nia Vardalos and her husband adopted a little girl even though today is the first day we are hearing about it. So why tell the public now? The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star wanted to support National Adoption Month, and spread the word about AdoptUSKids.

"They are going public now to bring attention to National Adoption Month and the 500,000 children in foster care," according to a statement from Vardalos's rep. "Of these children, 129,000 are 'legally free' for adoption and waiting for a family."

No specifics have been released about the child including her name. The only thing we do know is she is under 5 years old.

John Stamos and Joely Fisher have both made statements this week about adopting in the press.

Congratulations to them. Altho it doesn't specifically say what age the little girl is, adopting an older child is admirable. Most everybody wants the babies.

congrates to them. but, i do wish people would look at adopting kids that are older. those are the ones that are most likely not to ever get adopted. it's just sad that the older a child gets the less likely it is they will have a family. i also can understand why families do want babies, i guess it just seems easier. with an older child they are already set in their ways and it would probably be harder for them to adapt. but i would be up for that challenge. i do plan to adopt one day and have my own.

Congratulations to Nia and her wonderful family! My Husband and I are in teh process of adopting our 5 year-old daughter via USKids. While "adoption" may seem hot and the thing to do, there are just as many children currently in state care who are looking for good foster and permanent adoptive homes. It doesn't take much to become an adoptive parent (requirements vary with each state). And remember, the important differential is do you want to have a baby or be a parent? Because there's a big difference between the two. We wanted to be parents and couldn't be more thrilled to have our wonderful Daisy in our lives!
