Isla Fisher Says Pregnant Women Are Subject To "Body Fascism"

Actress and new mother Isla Fisher gave birth to daughter Olive last year.  This month she poses on the cover of the Australian version of FHM magazine, and in her interview she said that she was amazed at the criticism she experienced for gaining weight while pregnant.

When I was pregnant, I remember someone wrote on a blog that I had
gained too much weight. I remember being really shocked that even
during something as incredible and beautiful as pregnancy, you are
still subject to body fascism."

Actresses (and models) do experience incredibly close scrutiny of their bodies whether they're pregnant or not, and it's amazing that people don't seem to ease up even when they're pregnant!

What do you think: are pregnant actresses subject to body fasicm?

I don't think it is just actresses at all. When I first showed, women were nicer to me. The last trimester in the winter for my first, I just looked fat with a big overcoat or cape on. Let me tell you, strangers were downright rude to me. Many people are mean and judgemental about a lot of things. I just recently cut off my long hair into a modified bob. I find women are a lot nicer to me once again. Very weird how catty many women can be. Kind of depressing. I don't think men are as bad as hating for appearance, although, they too are nice to skinny me, not so much to me buried under winter outdoor clothes at 8-9 months. It was enlightening to say the least.

Yes, it's ridiculous... like especially on that one skinny blog or whatever. Those people are obsessed with weight and contantly judge even pregnant women. It's disturbing.

I think they are subject to it, but they shouldn't be. It's been so long since I was pregnant, but it was a different time back then. Both men and women are generally nice to me. A few years ago I was very depressed over a death in my family and I gained about 25lbs. I did notice that I was ignored more during my hefty time. Then when I lost the weight, I went back to being treated the same as before. Even during my hefty time I was only around 140lbs or so, which I don't really consider fat. But I am treated better at 115-120lbs than I am at 140lbs. I am only 5'4". Go figure.

uhm... while it is bad to criticize pregnant women, it is unhealthy to gain too much weight during pregnancy.. there's a healthy range.. above that.. then you can get gestational diabetes :)

i think its ridiculous. isla fisher was beautiful when she was pregnant. i had noticed that she was "bigger" than most other pregnant actresses and that's precisely what i found beautiful! she looked healthy and glowing, and most of all, like a real mom!!!!

I find it interesting that many actresses gain an excessive amount of weight when pregnant and then lash out at the media for calling them fat. the reality is that there is a healthy amount of weight one is supposed to gain when pregnant, and anything above that range puts both mother and baby at risk. I think a lot of actresses are so used to starving themselves that they see pregnancy as an opportunity to eat like pigs because they think it's normal.

I think ALL women are subject to body facism. When I was pregnant this old hag at my work kept asking me if I was pregnant with twins, and then she continued to ask after I said no. Grrrr.....still, it is much worse for women in the public eye and I think everyone needs to lay off. As a mother of a girl, I worry about the body image she is going to develop as a result of thissociety

That has definitely got to stop. A woman is supposed to gain weight during pregnancy to help feed the baby. Eating for two is not just a phrase!

Having been pregnant twice myself, it seems to be the great equalizer between actress and mere mortals..!
Personally, I noticed that it was mostly middle age women wouldn't give up thier seats on the T (Boston train system) for me when I was clearly super preggers the first time, commuting to work. Not sure what that was about.... :(

This is ridiculous. Pregnancy is natural state of women, it's so not right thinking otherwise. Gaining too much wait isn't healthy either, but that's noone decision, but mother-to-be. It's very wrong in my opinion to say something negative to pregnant lady and on top of that you might get her so upset it could add up to stress which neither her or her unborn child(ren) need. It's very selfish to say anyting bad to pregnant woman. Thanks God i still had my cool side not to react to people being mean to me when i was commuting to work every day up untill 10 days before my delivery.
