MTV Does Positive Reality TV

MTV Does Positive Reality TV

Where did the music go on MTV?  Maybe it's moved over to VH-1.  In an effort to combat declining ratings, MTV has announced plans to develop 16 reality TV shows over the next four months.

In case you forgot, MTV pioneered the reality TV trend with the show The Real World in 1992 (long before Survivor, which first aired in 2000).  Now MTV is leading to another shift- away from the backbiting drama that most reality TV is known for these days.

'Our new shows will feature themes of affirmation and accomplishment,'
says Brian Graden, prez of entertainment at MTV Networks music channels
and president of Logo. 'Our shows are going to focus less on loud and
silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves.'"

One of the new shows, College Life, gave camcorders to first-year students at the University of Wisconsin so they could "shoot their own lives."

Another untitled show, which is being produced by Nick Lachey, focuses on Cincinnati's School for Creative & Performing Arts students.

Donald Trump is also in on the act; he's producing a show called Girls of Hedsor Hall that will send a dozen party girls off to an English finishing school.  (No potential for drama with that one).

I don't know if these reality TV shows will truly be drama; is it really entertaining to watch any type of show with no drama?

And what is MTV without the music?  2009 will be interesting for MTV!

I can't stand "reality tv" but if they insist on keeping on with it, at least it'll be positive themes (so they say anyway). Music and videos would be a nice change. LOL

Vera you must not watch VH-1 because they don't show videos either. Just like MTV lost the M, VH-1 lost the V. This is probably a stupid question but if they want to increase ratings, why doesn't MTV show more videos? The decline happened when they started airing only reality shows.

well...in fact...why watch mtv when you've got youtube to see your favorite music videos? in times of internet...i doubt mtv and music videos sell out. very sad.

hate those reality shows on mtv. whole mtv is very dumb. only thing i like is "mtv made"...where they help teens to realise their dream and show them how to work for. that's cool.

very weird to see these two together...obviously in reality they don't hate each other as much as the show portrays...hmmm

wow do people honestly think it would improve ratings if mtv started airing more music videos?? like someone said before, you can just go on youtube or itunes or anywhere on the internet now and find all of that there.. times are changing, and although some of the things they show on mtv are a bit trashy or superficial, they seem to be doing ok and people still seem to be watching, probably more than if they just aired music videos all day long 24/7... that could get pretty old.. the only thing they should consider doing is changing the name of the station from mtv to something else.. but seeing how the name has become so well known even that seems to be a little ridiculous.
