I’ve never gotten into the show, but know plenty of people who enjoy Tony Shalhoub in Monk. The actor dropped a bomb to his fan base by admitting the 8th season will be the show’s last.
"It’s a great job, and I work with great people, and I really enjoy doing the character, but I think eight years is enough. I think we’ve kind of explored all the avenues we could possibly cover, and as much as I like the show and working on it, I really do want to think about moving onto whatever the next chapter might be.
"I think I want to keep acting, but I want to branch out and maybe be a producer on things I’m not acting in."
The seventh season kicked off in the U.S. on Friday, January 9th and Shalhoub will begin shooting the eighth and final season in March.

I too can understand why Tony Shaloub wants to move on but I for one don’t agree that 8 seasons is enough. Tony, your “Monk” fans are not ready to say good bye to Adrian Monk. Perhaps some of us are a little
“obsessive compulsive” in our devotion to the series but with good reason!
There is very very little as entertaining as “Monk” on TV these days.
My sister was an avid fan for a long time before I finally “got it”. One day I watched the episode where Monk proved that an egotistical astronaut was a murderer and suddenly the little light bulb in my brain switched on… I was hooked thereafter.
In one of the commercials concerning the fact that this season coming up is the last one, Monk says something like, “that’s CRAZY!” Listen to him, Tony.
PLEASE reconsider!!!
I just hope they wrap up the Trudy storyline. I really think they should have put more emphasis on that plotpoint.

The show was never the same after they forced Bitsy Schram out.
I’ve continued to watch because I do like Shaloub, but these past couple of seasons the character has been coming off like an egotistical ass. Once you lose sympathy for the character there isn’t much left.
No way, there is some kind of cosmic karma thing that will be broken if Monk ends before the 10th season. How can Monk end on anything but 10?!
My whole family was sad to learn that this was going to be Monk’s last season. It was nice to have a funny show to watch.
I hope this show ends on a very happy note. It’s okay to end on the positive.

How ignorant! She thought she was central to the plot line and tried to hold them up for huge money! She got what she deserved. Sharona was good, but Natalie has been just as good if not better foil for Monk.
Man, that is a bummer! I hope that the last season wraps up why his wife was killed, lets him catch the guy, and find some closer, and that Disher finally gets a girlfriend. Sad to hear that the series is ending, I really liked it.
Wow, I am genuinely sad to hear this, but I understand. He is an amazing actor and is phenomenal as Monk.
that is so weird…i was watching a new Monk episode the other day & i could just tell he wasnt as into it as before & commented to my husband that i wondered how much longer tony shalhoub would want to do this.
Just wasn’t the same after the assistant switch off early on and I just gave up on it.
That’s too bad. Natalie is awesome. I enjoy her way more than Sharona.
I’m sad that it’s ending but I agree with his decision. I would love to see him in more things than just Monk. Now if Psych goes off the air this year, I will give up!
Crap, Monk is one of my favorite shows. But, I guess I get where he’s coming from. Eight years is a very long time to be playing one character. It is understandable that he would want to do something different and new. I hope the re-runs stay on though. Btw, I like natalie better than the other assistant.

I am and not surprised the show is ending. Usually you here chatter about a show ending and this seems out of the blue. But 8 years is a long time. Like most shows that age a show starts to get boring and repititious. Hopefully they solve Trudy’s murder.
Say it ain’t so!!!! I love this show. If they are going to end it..i agree with the first writer..who killed Trudy? Tony Shaloub has done an outstanding job as Monk…and i’m sure this show will be in sindication for years to come.
