The picture circulating of Michael Phelps with a bong is going to hurt him with one sponsor at least. Cereal giant, Kellogs, says they’re done with the swimmer after the scandal.
"We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the
other Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S.
Olympic team," a company spokeswoman says in a statement. "Michael’s
most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His
contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not
to extend his contract."
Michael is also suspended from competition for three months, and won’t receive any financial support from the U.S. Olympic Committee during that time. Phelps’ rep says,
He "accepts these decisions and understands their point of view."
"He feels bad he let anyone down. He’s also
encouraged by the thousands of comments he’s received from his fans and
the support from his many sponsors. He intends to work hard to regain
everyone’s trust."
Is Kellogs making the right decision here, or should they give him another chance?

well duh…didn’t we all know that would happen.
of course Kellogs has to remove Phelps from their advertising and other sponsors will do the same, its not good for their name to be associated with Phelps… they will wait for his negative press to go away and when he is back on top he will get these and other sponsors back.
he also got suspended and wont be able to compete for 3 months.. ouchies!
Yes, they did the right thing. Phelps is a turd. He let the fame get to his head.
I hope he’s learned his lesson.
I think everyone was so hard on this guy. He was blasted to fame so quickly that the pressure must have got to him, and I am not saying that what he did was right. Just that his whole attitude post the olympics was that of a kid who let fame get to his head and this is the result. I still like him though.
Okay…I have to put this comment in here to represent my hometown. It is KELLOGGS not Kellogs…it is spelled with two g’s not one. I don’t mean to be a bitch because I love reading your stories but I grew up in the town where Kelloggs was first started so I have to make this correction. I have also gotten into fights with people over how you spell Eggos…yet again two g’s not one. Anyways, I love your website but I have to represent my hometown so I had to put this correction in there. Although I represent my hometown I do think that Kelloggs was a little harsh in revoking his contract. He’s still human and he has still done an amazing thing. Give the guy a break and let him just be a normal guy his age.
This is the guy who set the world record at the Olympics, I am sure that as much as he did it for himself he also did it for people of United States. I cannot believe how ignorant people are about this whole pot thing. Who hasn’t done any? I am sure every second person has tried it and its nothing that the world doesn’t know about and Michael Phelps is the first person to do it. I just hope he is remembered by his success and not these stupid stories.
Like he said, he gets drug tested on regular bases and passes all the time so this was obviously spur of the moment. Let him enjoy his life. Screw Kelloggs and their two G’s.
Let it go.
Kelloggs has the right to drop him but I think people are being WAY to harsh on him for this. He’s 23 and is behaving like a lot of normal 23 year olds behave. Maybe they should put Jesus on their boxes, he’s the only one that can live up to “image of Kelloggs”
