I have worked with a battered women’s shelter. The abusers NEVER think they are doing anything wrong, and almost never change. Physical attacks by anyone in a relationship are WRONG. There is NO justification. The abuser will make up anything to justify keeping on with the hitting, belittling, rape, or whatever. He (or, rarely, she) will not change, even in court-mandated counseling. The violence will escalate, and will eventually spill over to any children. Why does she stay? He threatens to kill her, the kids, himself, the family, etc. He controls everything even down to the amount of gas in the car. She has nothing of her own. He has the money for lawyers for custody, etc. It happens in all professions, and at all levels of income. Sometimes the monetarily comfortable woman has much more to lose – going from a $300K house to a shelter with 4 bunks in a room – nothing of her own, hiding from her abuser. Please do not blame the one who is abused. Violence by someone who professes to love is horrible.
