It's A Start - New Gel Protects Women From AIDS Virus

So, this isn't celebrity gossip - but it was still something I had to share. Is a cure for AIDS on the way?
An Indevus Pharmaceuticals gel formulated to protect women from the
virus that causes AIDS appeared to protect about a third of them from
infection -- the first time a so-called microbicide has been shown to
work, researchers told a conference in Montreal.
Dr. Salim Abdool Karim of the Center for the AIDS Program of
Research in South Africa and colleagues said the trial of 3,000 women
showed the gel may have protected 30 percent of the women from
infection.

FANTASTIC NEWS!
I do think that more sex education is needed in Africa- specifically Catholic countries so women can start to feel empowered to say use a condom etc., but this is a fantastic start.
Thanks for posting it.
In my opnion nothing is better than a condom, so I think I'll still use the condom. AIDS is scary, this gel needs more research, is a start though.

My daughter just got back from a trip to South Africa. Before she went she had to get shots and her doctor told not have sex with people she didn't know while she was there. My daughter was quite offended by that, but I told her that her doctor probably feels obligated to tell all of her patients that if they are going to South Africa. Don't take it personally. This is good news.

This is certainly good news, but I hope people aren't naive enough to rely on it.

what about the other 70%...that's a huge gamble from someone willing to knowingly take that chance. how did they come up with those stats anyway?

i do hiv prevention and i can't wait for an effective microbicide to be availabe here in the u.s. while africa continues to have the highest numbers, the numbers here are alarming, too. particularly among women. please believe that this is not a problem only for africans, gay men and injection drug users. thank you, vera, for posting this!
