Then the host of Germany’s Next Top Model, Wolfgang Joop, said,

What’s the deal? Why is everyone picking on Heidi???

Absolutely, early in her career. I read once that the first time she went to Paris, she was 15 or so, and was booked on the spot for 6 or 7 designers at Paris Fashion Week, the biggest event at the time in the fashion industry. She was a great runway model, very thin and tall. Can’t stand her now but that’s a different story…
It took me a long time to realize she really was/is a model. On the other hand, Karl is no one to talk about “heaviness”, if you get me. Claudia was my fav model since I can remember my existence.

Wow. I can’t believe the girls defending Karl Lagerfield’s statement’s here. Yes, Heidi is bigger than other runway models because she is HEALTHY! In all reality, she still is on the thin side, however, she is not paper thin and anorexic and you people are supporting that image! Runway models are not supposed to be stick thin. They look terrible! Heidi is closer to the image of what runway models used to look like in the 80′s and 90′s when it comes to weight. We shouldn’t be supporting the exploitation of women as stick thin and shoving it down viewers throats to make them feel like they’re not good looking or skinny enough. We should be angry that this sort of image is promoted and try to stop it. I’m not a fan of Heidi but I applaud her for never succumbing to pressures to be sickly looking.
I love heidi. how many runway models would actually look good doing that pose on the mag cover. none! we’d be pointing out their ribs and wondering how they can survive being so emaciated. she’s very successful with her make-up line, tv shows and mag spreads and most importantly her happy family. im betting she wouldnt trade any of it to be a runway model. i wish runway models looked like her. seriously karl, why on earth do women value the opinion of a gay man on their bodies. ask a straight man what is beautiful. gay men tend to want the models who have bodies of young boys.

I’m from Germany – and at the moment me and some friends are watching the new episode of Germany’s next Topmodel. Reading the comments of Karl and Wolfgang all I can say is: they are right! she was, and never will be, high-fashion. That’s a fact.
And I guess the reason why they sound a bit negativ is because she is just EVERYWHERE!!! On TV, in magazins…. and more and more Germans don’t want to see her anymore.
Also her voice is really annoying! That’s my opinion. We’ve been watching her show now for about an hour and the sound of her voice really makes your ears ring. Maybe it sounds different in english, but in german it’s just plain awful.

Heidi is not BIG! Karl really shouldn’t be talking like that. Why would he pruposefully hurt someone who’s worked so hard to get where she is today? That’s respectable.
However, I do agree that she has more of a commercial face which means more beautiful. All the girls on the runway are meant not to be seen …. designers want the CLOTHES to be seen, not the girls. So commercial models are naturally a lot more beautiful then runway models anyways. And that is in general…there are some exceptions of course.

I’ve never really seen any of her shows, but I saw that stupid-a$$ clip she did (it’s on YouTube, I think) where she was trying to be funny and talking about boobs. It was stupid and kind of scary. I thought she was high or something.

they’re not defending karl lagerfeld’s statement. they’re simply stating a fact, which is that runway models nowadays are stick-thin, an observation which can rationally lead to the conclusion that heidi klum, as a model, is not exactly runway, but more commercial. standards change all the time, and unfortunately for us, skeletal is what the high fashion bigwigs demand from their models. like you said, this sucks because it’s perpetrating the negative and unhealthy idea that scary thin is what it takes to be considered beautiful or desirable. women—and i say, people in general— should never let other people’s standards define who they are.
She is too big. She’s always been too big for the runway. She said herself that she’s too big for it, so calm down all you Heidi lovers. And indeed she is very commercial. Nothing wrong with that. Heidi is not known for runway shows (apart from VS and I think she’s way too old to compete with the young VS models), she’s known for her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues and Victoria’s Secret work and other commercial work. I mean, prob more famous then Claudia herself. Heidi’s career is probably way more successful the Claudia’s…her’s seemed so short. I remember that guess jeans campaign and what, L’oreal? Whoop-de-do.

while I disagree in stating the fact that she has curves and bust as overall negative and insulting for a woman to have, she IS heavy for runway. If you ever saw her on project runway and on VS show, she walks very heavy. As she puts her foot down it feels very forceful, not gracious, and not model like. She walks like a soldier. And for a runwaymodel her breasts are too big. Heidi is also not aging well, she looks older than her years and she looks rough. However, the Claudia Schiffer bs is simply silly. They are both models; not like Claudia is an intellectual scientist and mathematician and knows nothing about Heidi’s modeling gigs.
As far as I know Claudia quit the business around the time Heidi entered it, so I highly doubt they know each other much less they are best friends as Vera alleged. But she must have heard of her. As for the rest, ITA, Heidi isn’t a runway model. She was lucky to have been picked as an SI covergirl and nows how to promote herself. That’s all.
