Rosie O’Donnell Talks About Her Upcoming Movie Called America

Rosie O’Donnell gave a really honest interview to TV Guide Magazine and opened up about her experience with child abuse and why her upcoming Lifetime movie “America” hits so close to home.

On the film:

“‘America’…is about the struggle that an estimated half million kids in this country face, languishing in the foster care system. It took six years to get made because a movie about foster care isn’t high on the priority list”

“The movie is very close to my heart because I was a foster parent in Florida-until this November, gay people weren’t allowed to adopt there. And I identify with America because after my mom died, I was an abused child.”

On her character, Dr. B (America’s therapist at a treatment facility for foster kids):

“I had a person like Dr. B in my life…a teacher named Pat Marvel. She took me into her home and became like a mother to me after I ran away. She totally saved me.”

On her motivations and aspirations:

“I believe the foster care system is severely broken and to put a face on this unknown epidemic [is] very important. I think you have a responsibility, if what you’re doing means something to you, to help people through your art.”

“I hope this movie encourages the nation to step up to the plate and handle this epidemic…because it’s a tragedy.”

YES! i’m definitely looking forward to seeing this b/c i AM a foster parent. my husband and i have such a passion for fostering and are continually disappointed by the lack of public discussion about the issue, considering how many thousands of children are actually in the system. it needs to be addressed!
