Sarah Jessica Parker Wants To Make SATC "Recession-Friendly"

Sarah Jessica Parker said she is having conversations with Michael Patrick King (who is writing the next Sex and the City movie) about making sure the film is sensitive to the current economic climate.

There is a lot that we have to think about because times are very
different. So these are nice challenges, these are good challenges.

'How do we do that well? And how do we do that in a not lazy way? How do
we address these economic times in a franchise that has a lot to do
with luxury and labels?"

Do you think the SATC people should be concerned about this?  Do you want changes made to make it more "recession-friendly"?  I've wondered if the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic (based on a best-selling book about a woman who buries herself under a huge debt because she loves to shop, especially for designer labels.

And what does Sarah want for the movie?

'I think we want this one to be a romp,' she says. 'The last one, we got
to tell a really mature sophisticated story that had real heartbreak in
it, and this time, I think we want a romp. We want our audience to have
a massive romp.' "

How does that sound?

I really don't see why the movie has to become recession sensitive. Movies are dramatized. It's not like we expect to LIVE movies.

I don't want one that's recession sensitive, either. We all love to live vicariously through Carrie's wild spending on fabulous fashion. It will bum me out if Carrie is suddenly frugal. I go to the movies to escape reality for 2 hours. I don't want to be slapped in the face with harsh realities. LOL

I think most people want to be entertained. I also think people go to the movies to forget about their problems, not be reminded of them.

I agree. We go to these movies to escape our own reality. We've all lived vicariously through Carrie over the years buying her Manolo's and Prada bags. I think it's a bad idea....

I don't think they need to sugarcoat it for us - we can handle a shoe shopping frenzy!

Hopefully by the time the move comes out, the recession will be over.

i actually use these fashion-themed movies somehow as a guide: what/how to wear etc. to see how a luxe girl like carrie handles her finances and maintain her lifestyle in this time without depending on her man's money would be great; especially since she is no 30 anymore (where it's still kind of fun and cute to make shopping debts... and not sadly tragic).
and i also would love to see more "story" in this last film.

I think it could actually be amusing to add some recessionista aspects to SATC. Then again, I'm biased: I write a blog called Suddenly Frugal.

this is stupid. all these rich people trying to appear as if they are not spending money will NOT help the economy. if anything they should be spending money to help the economy.
Their shopping, partying, gambling, wining and dining keeps other people employed. Hoarding their money only makes them look stingy. No one is going to believe that they are being sensitive by pretending that they don't have millions. We know!

Obviously anyone in here has thought about the cost of their wardrobes. I think it's quite nice to make a SATC movie equally fashionable, but just a little more contained. Anyway, as long as Mr. Big is in it, I'm happy!

hmm I dunno about this recessionista SATC idea... It would be wierd if the girls started wearing non high end designer clothing. Maybe if they just started shopping for sales or something. I am curious though

Most people can't afford the clothes regardless so.....

The last one was a "Sophisticated" love story with heartbreak? .. i think they are kidding themselves a bit. The story was as basic as it gets, if not frustrating... ie Big if she isn't answering your emails, call one of her friends and get her new contact number of front up to her place.. its not THAT hard to track her down. You used to run into her everywhere before... now you can't find her for months? ... Sorry, but the suspension of disbelief was suspended too far.

The movie was completely unrealistic even the good economic times. Can we please add some realism? Carrie is not Cinderella.

I am a big SATC fan but I wish they wouldn't do another movie. Something do have to end and the ending of the film was perfect. As for recession friendly, sorry, but I don't really care if the handbags they use cost 500 or 5000 quid, it's a film, for Pete's sake, nothing is real anyway. If I want reality I'd watch a documentary.

It sounds stupid, just like SATC...Good God, just let it die already, they are old, ugly hags wearing overpriced tacky clothes, screwing around. The show had its moment of fame & glory & now its over. Just like that wretched "Friends" show, they talk about making a movie of, just give it up already.
Recession friendly or not, another film shouldnt even be made period....

DarkEmpress, I agree. I'm sick of really rich people, celebs, etc. being like, "Oh, we're being sensitive to the recession." By cutting back on the big Oscar parties, the clothes, the shoes, etc., there could be negative effects (less catering jobs, etc.). People are rich because we (used to) live in a capitalist society--people come to this country still because they want to become rich. If Samantha is a successful PR person, it just wouldn't make sense if she's shopping at Filene's. She made herself successful (that's kinda the point of her character)--don't make her hard work, and the American Dream, for nothing.

SATC acknowledged the WTC bombing by having the girls pass an ever so brief mention that they should shop downtown to support local businesses.

This time they should make a mention of keeping their bank accounts under the new $250,000 FDIC limit. On their way to Jimmy Choo's.

Ash Ash said:

I think it's a good idea. At least it's in keeping with the show. SATC the television show always adjusted their stories to what was going on in New York at the time. And Carrie shopping at thrift/vintage stores is nothing new--it just was not part of the film (which makes sense because Carrie had become a best-selling author with several books out, thus a bigger paycheck and more labels in the closet). I think it is smart. And I think "Confessions of a Shopaholic" could not have come out at a more unfortunate time. Who wants to see that frivolous shit right now?

Jane Jane said:

Carrie needs to get laid off, and Big needs to lose a load of money in real estate. It's the only way it would even seem plausible in the current economic climate. Otherwise, just pretend SATC exists in an alternate universe and keep the audience dreaming. That's the way we like our Sex and the City anyway.

I think it is a complete nonsense. Why do they have to do the movie recession friendly? I don't see anything bad in watching movies about the luxury life at the evenings at home. I would say more. I think it is even better to watch sophisticated and rich movies at this hard time of economic crisis because we can dream about the better life, like they do in the movies, and start to work even harder to reach the life that they have, and never give up.
