Memorable Oscar Quotes - 81st Annual Academy Awards

Here are a few great quotes from Sunday night's 81st annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles:

Producer Christian Colson after "Slumdog Millionaire" won the best picture Oscar

"When we started out, we had no stars, we had no power or muscle, we didn't have enough money really to do what we wanted to do. But what we had was a script that inspired mad love in everyone who read it. ... Most of all, we had passion and we had belief and our film shows that if you have those two things, truly anything is possible."

Sean Penn, accepting the best actor Oscar for his role in "Milk."

"You commie homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often, but I am touched by the appreciation."

Kate Winslet, holding the Oscar she won as best actress in "The Reader."

"I'd be lying if I said I haven't made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably 8 years old and staring into the bathroom mirror, and this would have been a shampoo bottle. Well, it's not a shampoo bottle now."

Danny Boyle, jumping up and down, after winning the best director Academy Award for "Slumdog Millionaire."

"My kids are too old to remember this now, but when they were much younger, I swore to them that if this miracle ever happened that I would receive it as the character of Tigger from 'Winnie-the-Pooh.'" -

Heath Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, accepting the Oscar for best supporting actor on behalf of his son.

"This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here - his peers within an industry he so loved."

Dustin Black, accepting best original screenplay Oscar.

"When I was 13 years old my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk and it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life."

Penelope Cruz, accepting the best supporting actress Oscar.

"It's not going to be 45 seconds, I can say that right now. Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one."

Host Hugh Jackman to Meryl Streep during the opening of the Oscars show.

"Fifteen career Oscar nominations. That's a record. I hate to say it but when someone puts up numbers like that, it's just hard not to think steroids."

Simon Beaufoy on-stage after winning the best adapted screenplay Oscar for "Slumdog Millionaire."

"There are certain places in the universe you never imagine standing. For me, it's the moon, the South Pole, the Miss World podium and here."

Which was your favorite moment? I can't believe it is over... I feel like tonight we are all going to do it again!

I think Kate's and Penelope's were my favorite speeches, and of course I got teary-eyed when Heath's sister said "We really wish you were here, but we proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda."

I always weep during the tribute portion, but I totally lost it when Paul Newman came up. I just loved him, and I loved his voice-over with the image of him & Joanne.

I agree lara jane: I teared up a little at the Paul Newman tribute as well. And I loved when Kate's dad whistled down to her! That was adorable.

I loved that Sean Penn Won and his speech was awesome. I like that he says what he feels at the moment. So real! Lots of crying moments, laughing moments. but I will tell you.. I feel like I am hungover this morning.. so next time, they should rethink all the musical numbers and make it fit the time alloted. (although I liked the one with Beyonce and Hugh) the others were not at all necessary. They started to lose me about 3/4 way through. I liked all the puns and jabs throughout the night. about time people say what they are really thinking.. LOL Tina Fey and Ben Stiller.. priceless!! Jen and Angie - fight over already.. get it people..media take note.. no more BS..SJP boobs and Alicia Keys.. made me want to bat for the home team..LOL Kate Winslet's.. "suck it up" comment to Meryl..and the little movie that could...DID. ok back to reality now! =)

Did Sean Penn even thank his lovely wife Robin? If he did, I missed it. I loved Ben Stiller as Joaquin Phoenix, that was hilarious. I thought Hugh Jackman did ok. I liked the musical number with Hugh and Beyonce. The other ones I could have done without. Speeches are way too long. I loved the tribute with Queen Latifah. I really like her when she sings normal and doesn't do the rap thing. Nothing really over the top this year. I remember the years with Cher.

I didn't hear him thank her, either. I actually cringed a little bit because of it. Forgetting to thank your spouse is a big no-no!

They almost divorced last year so I;m sure that had something to do with it.

I LOVE that Kate won.... I don't believe it's ever been "easy" for her in the movie industry given the unrealistic (i.e., twig) stereotypical Hollywood actress expectations. She's a truly beautiful woman that chooses roles with depth and has made it HER WAY; she's refused to buy into the image hype and sets a much more ideal & healthy image for women today.

Perhaps her general avoidance of Hollywood has helped keep her views more realistic. Too bad more actresses can't take a cue from her - I'd be willing to bet no amount of surgeries, implants, injections, etc., will ever help an actress win an Academy Award.

I saw each of the films nominated and The Reader was indeed a cultural, religious, and sociopolitical landmine - it risked asking the audience (not have sympathy, but perhaps to) have empathy for an individual that participated in one of the most unspeakable horrors in recent history. While I definitely felt her performance was the best of each actress nominated, I feared she would not win due to the obvious issues surrounding the film & the character she portrayed.

Congrats Kate! You earned that Oscar!
