The color is beautiful and suits her, but I agree that the outfit looks too much like a leather couch or bag.
It’s very poorly fitted. If it was tailored for her properly it might not be so sofa-esque, and she would look less like an upholstered telephone pole.

It would be cute as either just a top with jeans or a skirt with a cute top, but the two together is a bit much. Or, if it had to be a dress, a different cut and shorter hemline would be more flattering with some cute boots.
I could see wearing that to work (if I were a size 0) with a button down shirt or something like that underneath.

I agree the cut of the dress is terrible. Even if it weren’t leather I would still hate it. If it were tailored and sleek, I’m sure it would be fabulous.
