Nia Vardalos Tells How She Lost 40 Pounds

Nia Vardalos Tells How She Lost 40 Pounds

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' star Nia Vardalos talked to People.com about how she shed 40 pounds. She used the old time-tested secrets: diet and exercise.

'I broke up with cheese,' Vardalos recently told PEOPLE. 'I always say
like cheese keeps calling me and trying to get me to meet at a cheap
motel but I'm really committed to just staying single for awhile. ' "

Nia did mention that she did "like, 50 other things" to lose weight, but she said cutting out cheese was the big one.

Good for her! What an accomplishment.

In the thumbnails, the last two are of Nia before the weight loss so you can see the difference (although she looked great then, too).

Doesn't she look great?

Just eat in moderation. I am vegetarian and I eat cheese in moderation as part of my protein and calcium daily requirement. Too much of anything is bad for you. The US has more fat people than fit people and it is time to quit making excuses and start practicing a healthy lifestyle and quit blaming it on genetics.

Lol. I lost 45 pounds by eating cheese, fat, berries, cream and everything else that is supposedly "bad" for you. :D

Not to mention that my blood-pressure became much lower and my cholesterol is awesome now. But heeey, please don't get on this diet called low carb. It might kill you or give you kidney-stones or something else horrible! Yikes!

Cheese is not bad for you in moderation. I too am a vegetarian and I actually eat more cheese now then I did before I became a vegetarian. I am in the best shape of my life eating what I want in moderation. People in the U.S. have an excuse for everything, its pathetic. We ALL have access to good foods people are just too lazy.

I'll be the third to say that I'm a vegetarian that eats more cheese than before, too! I also am in much better shape and FEEL better. I eat a lot of whole wheat/grain pasta to get my protein and obviously take vitamins to be sure I'm getting all those other random things that none of us get in our normally daily diet, vegetarian or not. My skin, hair, and nails are much healthier than before, as well. I also agree that everything should be done/eaten in moderation. My sister is a nutritionist and that is her mantra. If you deny yourself, you'll feel cheated and, in turn, cheat... much better to satisfy those little cravings in little ways and then forget about it! Congrats to her though - losing weight is an accomplishment in itself, so if giving up cheese worked for her, then more power to her!

I gave up all dairy products several years ago and lost 10 lbs without doing anything else. I was having health issues and when I cut out all animal products, my health issues resolved themselves. I do believe that you have to eat less and exercise more, there really is no magic pill that will make you lose weight.

There is nothing wrong with cheese, cheese is not bad for you; food is not bad for you. What is bad for you is not putting down the fork. I dislike when people blame certain foods for their fatness.."yeah cheese is your fault I'm 200 pounds, damn you to hell Velveeta!!"

AGREED! Cheese is very good for you: It has calcium and fat and protein. Portion control all the way, man.... Everything in moderation.

Nia looks great!! LOVE her.

How much cheese was she eating before?

Dude cheese is super bad for you! Not only is it fatty, but it is essentially made out of something that humans were never intended to consume and instead is meant to grow a tiny calf into a huge 2,000 pound cow. Yeah I'll pass.

actually cheese IS good for you (just don't eat too much b/c it is fatty)....but it's good for your hair, skin, bone and teeth - that's a secret for looking young. it is packed with nutrients such as protein, calcium, vitamin A, riboflavin, niacin & vitamin B12.

she said that she gained 20 pounds for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, so really, she only lost 20 pounds.

What? That's the lamest post I've ever read. She still had to lose 40 lbs total which is a dauting task.

Personally , I don;t see much of a difference between the before and after pics.

I saw a preview of her new movie and couldn't believe it was her! She looks incredible!!! Congrats to her on a great accomplishment!

She lost 40 lbs?! She doesn't look that big beforehand at all.

Cheese would be the LAST thing I could ever give up - life without camembert, caerphilly, goats cheese and St Nectaire would be very dull indeed.

You're right about the pictures. I think those were taken during her weight loss not before she started. If you saw the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding and compare her from then till now, you'll notice a huge difference. She seriously looks great!

Okay cheese isn't bad for you but obsessions are. I know i'll never be an "everything in moderation" woman. I just relaps so easily if i try & eat too freely. I can have my treats a few times a month but i def. need to controle it(bad memories from trying to get used to eating everything in moderation a few years back, gained like 15 pounds, lmao!!), so i get her point. I only remember her from Greek Wedding so to me she looks a lot thinner, i don't know if others have been keeping an eye on her after that as well.. She looks beautiful

For some reason I found this comment extremely annoying..

She could have a food allergy to cheese, making it bad FOR HER. If you have inflammation going on in your gut from food allergies, then it is very difficult to lose weight, no matter what you eat.

I defend (and do truly love) cheese in all the wonderful varieties it comes in.
