Hilarie Burton Talks About 'One Tree Hill' Exit

Hilarie Burton talked to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello about her upcoming 'One Tree Hill' exit. It sounds like she wants to make it clear that everything was done amicably.

There really wasn't a lot of turmoil [about the decision to leave the show]. It was a fabulous six-year run,
which is how long my contract was for, and I feel really lucky to have
been a part of the show. So when I hear that there's turmoil or
negotiations based on money it kind of hurts my feelings, because it's
not what's been going on at all. I think my fan base in particular
knows that money isn't necessarily a big motivator for me, that's why I
work in the world of independent film.

For me, it was definitely an
emotional decision [to leave the show]. And a professional decision as well. I got really,
really lucky. One Tree Hill was my very first television audition; it
was a fairytale. I feel really lucky to have that level of success
right out of the gate."

So was it Hilarie's decision to leave or, as Ausiello says, "The Powers That Be"?

I think everyone was kind of agreeable about the situation.
There were a lot of really wonderful conversations. It wasn't a rash
decision; a lot of thought, emotion, and kindness was put into it. I
would hope that that's the story that gets out -- that it was a bunch
of adults being good to each other and being kind about the
decision-making process."

This definitely contradicts Chad Michael Murray's video, but everyone has different perspectives on big decisions like this. It sounds like it is important to Hilarie to leave the show on good terms and that she genuinely cares for her 'One Tree Hill' colleagues.

Chad's rep declined to comment for the article.

I love Hilarie, but i'm so over Peyton... I think it's a good choice by all involved. Can't wait to see what happens w/ the show.

The show is going to suck big time. I loved her she was actually the only female lead who wasn't a big stereotype of America. Brooke is pretty so she has to be a prom queen and desingning clothes talk about being original :-( Haley was a pregnant teenager who got married at a very young age bla bla!Without Lucas and peyton the show won't be the same, haley and nathan have been the supreme bore since they had Jamie they have nothing interesting going on since nanny carrie got killed off. At least Peyton and lucas had to go trough some drama in order to end up together. I'm happy they are gone in a good way, I'll miss them. I won't be watching oth anymore and I'm sure the show is going to lose lots of fans so Mark you better do something about it, bring back karen and whithey at least! I don't think julian, mia sam or millie are gonna spice up the show and brooke alone is not enough to bring to the show a new excitement! Guess I'll have lots of time to discover new shows :)

so the show is gunna SUCKKKKKKKK without peyton and lucas especially peyton. i mean i LOVE lucas but peyton is my favorite i wish that at least peyton would stay like lets just say peyton and lucas and sawyer moved out of tree hill but just peyton visited with sawyer and lucas u can say is always busy with books or whatever. What im gunna miss the most is brooke and peyton if only i was a brooke fan this would be so much easier but i adore peyton

I agree Thanks alot Mark Schwahn! You truly don't care about OTH's Fans.

OTH season 7 is going to flop just like The O.c When they took Marissa off.. You can not expect to take off Two main Characters like Lucas and Peyton and expect the Show to take the same leap it always has. Oth is in for a big turn for the worst and I am completley devistated about it.
It shows how much the writers truly care about their fans. Not nearly enough.
