Winona Ryder Talks About Her Struggles With Fame

Winona Ryder Talks About Her Struggles With Fame

After taking a 7-year hiatus from the public eye, Winona Ryder is back with a role in 'Star Trek' (Spock's mom: didn't you recognize her?) and the upcoming fall movie, 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.' She talked to the UK edition of Elle about dealing with fame as a teenager, including the break-up of her engagement to Johnny Depp.

'I had just done Dracula and Edward Scissorhands. I had just had my first real break-up, the first heartbreak.'

'And I think it was really ironic because, like, everybody else just
thought I had everything in the world, you know, I had no reason to be
depressed, everything was sort of at its peak, but inside I was
completely lost.

'I remember feeling, 'I can't complain about anything,
because I'm so lucky, I'm so lucky.' After that I realized I needed to
take time off more [regularly].' "

Did you know she was only 19 at the time of their break-up? I don't remember her being so young!

Now, Winona says she has developed "more balance in her life" and expresses her admiration for fellow actress Kate Winslet.

During the Oscars, I was thinking about how she totally has that thing,
she has her family and children and life and she seems really together
and solid – and yet she can completely devastate you on the screen."

It sounds like time off from the limelight was good for Winona, don't you think?

Maybe she will stop stealing from Nordstroms now that she has "balance in her life".

Oh yes. She has that weird Kate Winslet obsession and she mentioned it so many times in the past. It's creepy!

I've always enjoyed her movies and I'm glad to see her back :)

well at least she realizes she had no legitimate reason to be depressed and distressed. most people in hollywood don't even realize or recognize how good they have it! they should be eternally greatful to those masses who shell out their hard earned money to buy their product.

Did she get help for her constant need to steal expensive things that she clearly can afford? I'm sure her rich celeb friends have a very hard time trusting her. A rich bitch who is a thief..the irony

what fame? honey , your fame (your real fame) went screaming when you went off the deep end....Look when big movies start offering you parts were you're no longer the lead and you're playing parts where no one even knows it's you ( unrecognizable characters ) you have lost the real zest for what real fame is, especially with your working peers within the industry.

if we can forgive and endure a lindsay or a paris for the last 5 years we can easily forgive winona for "stealing" (which was clearly a psych. problem and a cry for help at that time). she had so many wonderful movies (can i already say "classics"?) and is still so talented. i'm ready to give her another try. and another.

I agree! You guys are being pretty hard on her. She really is fantastic. I don't think it matters if you are a celebrity or not, getting your heart broken is painful. And she had to see news about it splashed over tabloids.

I am actually rooting for her. I hope she revives her career and finds herself a nice man.

Winona Ryder is a person just like everyone else. Fame does not immune a person from personal problems, health problems, or psychological problems. Personally, I think it is good that she has come to terms with what she went through in the past (that is if she hadn't before telling public)...it helps people figure out why they are the way they are and move on more smoothly in life. Whoever said life is easy was way off.
