Update: Were Drugs A Factor In Michael Jackson’s Death?

I wasn’t sure about reporting this, but since the family attorney Brian Oxman is talking to the media (and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t do that without the family’s blessing), I’m putting this out there. According to Oxman and other sources, the family is concerned that Michael Jackson’s untimely death may be drug related.

"I don’t know what caused Michael’s death, and I don’t want to speculate as to what the causes are," Oxmon tells Usmagazine.com.
"I only know that I warned them there was the misuse of prescription
medications by people who were enabling him; his handlers, folks who
should never have been permitted to allow him to use those medications
in the manner I observed."

"So is that the cause of it? I don’t know," he continues. "People
die from various and sundry causes – they have congenital malformations
of the heart, they have difficulty with various infections. I don’t
know what Michael Jackson’s death is a result of."

Oxmon says the 50-year-old Jackson — who suffered cardiac arrest
and was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. PST Thursday — "had no particular
health concerns except that he had broken his leg many years ago, and
it hurt him."

"He had cracked a vertebrae in his back and he took painkillers to
try to ease the pain," he says. "And now we find ourselves here. I
don’t know if the two are connected…"

According to People, family members attempted to stage an intervention to get Michael to obtain treatment for dependence on prescription drugs that reportedly only angered Michael. A source said that one of Michael’s aides supplied the pop star with drugs obtained from various doctors.

TMZ reports that a physician lived with Michael and alleges the physician administered an injection of Demerol at approximately 11:30 am PT yesterday. A family member reportedly says the dose was "too much."

TMZ says the LAPD are want to interview the physician now, but he cannot be located. They say the physician’s BMW was towed from the premises last night.

And then there’s Liza Minnelli’s statement to the CBS Early Morning Show, according to Entertainment Tonight.

"All of us who knew him well really know what he was like," she said.
"And I’m sure that now the accolades are going, and I’m sure when the
autopsy comes, all hell’s going to break loose. So, thank God we’re
celebrating him now."

His autopsy was started this morning in Los Angeles, although toxicology test results can take up to 8 weeks.

The truth is eventually going to come out, but whatever it is, we already know it will be tragic.

My thoughts are with his children.

Update: According to Brian Oxman, police have seized drugs from Michael’s home.

Police seized bags of material from his house. They were looking for
drug vials and syringes. I don’t know if they found syringes, but there
would have been a lot of drug vials."

"I am going to wait until I get the toxicology report, and if his
death has something to do with drugs, I am prepared to name names of
doctors who prescribed them."

He added that the Jackson family was totally devastated by Michael’s
death: "They couldn’t even talk to one another in the hospital. It was
total silence, and they were just holding one another’s hands."

    I still can’t fully believe he’s dead. I hope drugs weren’t involved.

  2. Lizzypoo says:

It makes it even more tragic that his death could have been a preventable mistake. I remember him always being sick and his friends say he was so lonely. It’s quite possible that medicines mixed or that he overdosed. I really feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for his children who have had a very odd sheltered life and he was their world. I hope for their well-being they still remain sheltered to a point.
I feel sorry for the world’s loss and the people who are too blinded by his oddness to see past that and recognize his death as an important loss to the American culture. His contributions to the music world are vast and terribly important.
RIP, I will remember you for the 41 or so years of your 50 on earth that you gave to music and the world not for the controversy that plagued you.

Sounds like an Anna Nicole case…

  5. Erika1980 says:

It’s a shame how the doctors that prescribe all these drugs to celebs aren’t held accountable.

  6. Booyah says:

I am beginning to think that being a child star is deadly. So many tragic endings to folks who made the mistake of becoming superstars as children.

  7. Anonymous says:

I have been crying all day since last night, this is so tragic I cannot believe he is gone. I feel like I lost a huge chunk of my life and I never even knew him. I hope his soul is at peace and I hope the person responsible gets held accountable. Not like that will bring him back but at least it may give his family some peace. May his children have the strength to overcome this with gratification knowing their father was a true genius who made other peoples lives a much better place. This is so sad.

  8. lis says:

I know it’s terribly cynical to say, but I don’t think history was prepared for Michael Jackson to die an old, quiet death of natural causes.

  9. emches says:

So tragic! I just pray for those kids. Just like with Anna Nicole Smith, all of his dirty laundry is going to be dragged out in the media and those kids are going to be subjected to all of it. =( —em’s

  10. smcose says:

I am pretty taken aback by Liza Minnelli’s comment. It’s pretty telling.

  11. Gisela says:

Maybe Micheal’s family feel some sort of guilt, they knew Michael had a drug problem but felt helpless. The question now is, what is going to happen to his kids? They are not biologically related to any of the Jacksons. Debbie doesn’t deserve them, when she tried fighting for custody, Michael gave her a bigger check again, and she signed over her parental rights.

  12. Anonymous says:

I don;t understand…why do you say his kids are not biologically related to the Jacksons? If MJ was the biological father, then the kids have a lot of biological aunts, uncles, cousins, and two grandparents.

  13. Anonymous says:

he used a sperm donor for at least 2 of the 3.

  14. Gisela says:

Sorry, but I thought it was common knowledge that Micheal’s kids are not biologically his. His sperm was not used to father those kids. You can research it if you want, I’m not making it up or trying to tarnish Michael s’ memory.

  15. Amy says:

I wonder just what Liza knows. I am really surprised she would say something like that.

  16. kiki says:

No, Michael Jackson wasn’t their biological dad but he was still their dad. It wouldn’t be any different if he adopted them, they are apart of the Jackson family. Maybe, they would go to one of his sisters or brothers. If I had to guess, I would say Janet because she doesn’t have any kids. Who knows? But, I know Debbie signed over all her rights.

  17. mjam623 says:

Oh, man…this isn’t exactly shocking, but it sounds like it’s going to get pretty ugly. It’s amazing what some doctors will do for money.

  18. kiki says:

They are now saying that even though it was reported Debbie gave up custody, she really didn’t. She is only the mother of two.

  19. Anonymous says:

Michael was murdered!! Where’s the doctor or handler??! I hope they find him, rip MJ.

  20. Anonymous says:

Oh PLEASE! Why can’t they just let the man rest in peace!! It is going to be non-stop gossip and hearsay for months about his death.

  21. Caitie says:

    How incredibly sad…

  22. luckystar says:

    http://www.tmz.com/2009/06/26/beware-of-lawyers-dropping-jacksons-name/

TMZ reporting that we should be aware of anyone acting as Jackson’s lawyer:

“If any lawyer claims on TV he or she is representing Michael Jackson’s estate or the Jackson family — they’re full of it, because we’re told no one who is doing this has been retained in any capacity”

Vera, I really think you should add that to your article above…

  23. audrey says:

If you stop to think about it, the reason why so many famous people are hooked on drugs, be it pain medication or illegal narcotics is because of the fame. No one wants to be the one person to stand up and say no to the star, because everyone, from the smallest minion to the right hand man, are too busy stroking the ego that signifies an entertainer. No one wants to be cast from that all important inner circle they feel they belong to. Michael is being portrayed as someone less than human–always has been by his doting fans. He is not above human failings, and it is time that fact is realized. No one–no matter how much you adore them or admire their talent is perfect.

  24. Monica says:

Whatever it was, I hope MJ is at peace and that soon his family will be too when they find out the cause of his death.

  25. micky says:

I hope Micheal jackson will have private funeral and Burial . Because U.S.A people hated him after The Trouble in neverland and all the courts he had . He could not put on any concerts in U.S.A , or have his music or video played on some american radio and T.V . All his concert he had was in Asia and Europe . now he is died , U.S.A loves him , because they think they will make lots of money from his grave and music .

  26. marialenit says:

today is August 8,2009. Just call me crazy if at this hour in time i am still looking for some words in the net to read about Michaels death. I can still feel the pain about his passing. Michael is someone very impossible to forget specially that his music keeps playing in my mind a part of my life. i wish i could turn back the time and keep Michael alive, but only GOD KNOWS WHY ITS TIME FOR M.J. TO BE WITH HIM.THANK YOU GOD FOR GIVING US MICHAEL JACKSON. THE KING OF POP WHO SHARES US HIS MUSIC AND GAVE US JOY.

  27. Wonder_Woman says:

I just cant believe how many wonderfully gifted actors, artists, musicians we lose to drug related overdoses…. the king of rock n’ roll and the king of pop

  28. Gisela says:

I was thinking the same thing too WW, these celebrities with all the money and power always end up with some drug problem. Prescriptions or illegal it always goes back to drugs or alcohol. It doesn’t help that seedy characters always hang around these celebs enabling their behavior.

  29. ObsessedChix says:

It sound so cliche, but it is just such a HUGE loss… and for what? drugs?….. too sad to comment.

    **********************************
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT MY FAMILY..WE ARE AS THICK AS THIEVES!

  30. Manimal says:

I heard it was “demerol.” Sorry if it was spelled wrong, but it’s just a rumor I heard on the radio this morning. Took an injection and started breathing shallower every moment until he stopped. Very sad.

  31. poetstar says:

I knew it! He was suffering from auto-immune disease and that combined with stress and pain killers will do you in. So sad. I hope his children will come out of this ok and I hope that people remember the good he brought to the world.

  32. laurnicorn says:

    Yikes

  33. bgduckie_01 says:

all of this is just so sad. and it wont stop there cuz now it’ll be about the children and the money (even though he was in debt)…
    :(

  34. Anonymous says:

    I heart painkillers.

  35. CapturingLife says:

I love how NOW the people around will start saying “oh we knew something wasn’t right with this doctor or that handler and blah blah”. NOW that it’s too late and had a tragic outcome. :(

  36. dieselchicklett says:

What a Tragedy, What a Loss…He will be truly missed.

  37. Jelvus says:

Jim Morrison? Yeah, I remember him…. I am a musician. The sad part is that most of the greatest songwriters and performers are and/or were drug addicts. Look at Scot Wieland. I hope he cleans himself up, but you have to admit he wrote some great songs while on heroin. I would be happy to be a one hit wonder….maybe I’ll take just one hit!
