Christian Bale Remained In Character For Four Months While Shooting Public Enemies

Christian Bale "freaked out" his daughter by keeping his accent for 'Public
Enemies' off set.
The British actor plays FBI officer Melvin Purvis in the 1930s gangster
film and in preparing for his role kept a strong southern accent
throughout filming.
The film's director, Michael Mann, said:

"Melvin Purvis was really a southern
gentleman. So Christian kept the accent for 24 hours a day. It freaked out
his young daughter. She said: 'Daddy doesn't talk like that!' he replied:
'Well, ah'm sorry, mah dear, but daddy's studying for a part, and ah'll be
speaking like this for the next four months.' "

Can you imagine?! LOL!

Michael also revealed that Johnny Depp - who plays the film's leading
character, outlaw John Dillinger - was more influenced by wardrobe, and one
of the most exciting parts of the production was when they got some clothes
which actually belonged to the gangster.
Michael added:

"We got to see some of Dilinger's packed suitcases, which he
had left behind after an escape, and Johnny was able to actually hold his
shirts in his hands.

"They still had the pink paper band around them from the Chinese laundry.
And there were more accoutrements than you'd have thought for a guy on the
run - shaving kit, talcum powder.

"You bet there's magic to that stuff. I'm not superstitious, but I couldn't
help it."

That must be exciting for someone to actually get to see some items that belonged to the man they are portraying in a movie. I imagine that connection would make an actor want to do justice to the part.

What do you think about actors who keep in character even while off set because it helps with their process? You never think about the families right? Imagine what Christian's daughter must have thought for all those months! LOL!

Vera, you need to edit the article! Michael Mann directed the film, not Michael Bay, of Transformers fame...

Thank god for that! Transformers 2 is officially the worst movie of all time. Every article is riddled with errors :(

I don't like this "remain in character" thing that actors do, ever heard of "don't bring your work home"? especiallly when this could frighten your young child

Daniel Day-Lewis might have a few golden statues that could argue against that point.

You don't like this "remain in character thing?" Uhmm.... in order to perfect something you need to practice. And if you actually think he is scaring his children then you are an idiot.

Why the shock? He's notorious for really getting into character....Sorry for a potentially stupid question, but how old is his daughter?

Very cool, that kind of thing is right up Johnny's alley. He so gets into his characters!

Bale has done a Southern accent before, right?

Anonymous Anonymous said:

We're not talkinga bout Depp, here. It's Christian Bale who is staying in character with the accent.

too bad he freaked his daughter with the accent. So by staying in the charachter would make him to talk like that with everyone in the family, his agent poeple on the set between the takes , wouldn't it be too hard to explain everyone why his talking like that?

Anonymous Anonymous said:

He probably doesn't care- and if does have to explain it's just more practice to perfect his accent

I think Christian Bale is an incredible actor and I have loved everything I have seen him in. He gets so deeply involved into his characters- what he went through for The Machinist- it's really unbelievable. I really admire his dedication, he's such a perfectionist, the things he does always turn out amazing

I love Christian Bale! He is an amazing, dedicated actor whom I admire and respect. There aren't that many celebs out there who are so dedicated to their craft. I hope he gets many more roles to pick and choose from, becasue I want to see more of him. BTW i have the BIGGEST crush on him! He is super sexy!

I think its a sign of a BAD Actor if he has to keep in character 24 hours a day whether it freaks his daughter out or not! Somebody that cant switch it off for his "private" life is a total wierdo. THe more a hear about Christian Bale the more I am sure he is headed for a breakdown and then retirement. And Good riddance when that happens!

i think that Bale does a wonderful actin job and if he wants to stay in character 24/7 then who cares..actors are no more improtant then the rest of the world, they deserve to have a private life out of the sight of the rest of us...i have seen every movie he has put out and i think that he just really enjoys his roles, who wouldnt when they make that much money...Bale has had a major growth to the kind of characters he portrays... i would like to see some of us get out there and keep a southern accent, or a new york accent when they arent from those places..he is british and has to work on his accent due to that fact...instead of cracking jokes and say bad things, think about it and try an accent of your own...it isnt easy and takes practice.

I used to love Christian Bale, and I still enjoy his movies but this guy has some issues. There's a difference between honing your craft to perfect and the kind of compulsion he has.
