Winners From The 2009 BET Awards Plus Michael Jackson Tribute

Tributes to Michael Jackson dominated the BET Awards last night.
Joe Jackson - the father of the 50-year-old pop legend, was one of the first to pay homage to his son, speaking about him on the red carpet at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium.

"I wish the world had recognized him when he was living. Right now, he's bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this."

Janet Jackson also made an appearance, and thanked Michael's fans for all their support in the wake of his passing.

"My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was just too painful so they elected me to speak with all of you.
"I would just like to say that to you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family, and he will forever live in all of our hearts.
"On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all your love - thank you for all your support. We miss him so much."

Jamie Fox hosted the show, and entered wearing a red leather jacket in a nod to Michael's costume in the music promo for 'Beat It'.
After the event opened to a medley of Jackson 5 songs - including 'ABC' and 'The Love You Save' - Jamie walked onto the stage to 'Beat It'.
He said:

"No need to be sad. We want to celebrate this black man. We are going to go through all of Michael Jackson."

The singer-and-actor also performed Michael's signature dance move the moonwalk and performed the Jackson 5 hit 'I'll Be There' alongside Stevie Wonder and Ne-Yo as images of the late King of Pop flashed up on a big screen.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

why do they have to say "black man?" obvioulsy he wanted to be white, hence him dying his skin! why do ppl have to bring up color? get the F over it!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Uh, maybe because it was the BET awards...

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Well exactly. It is the BET Awards. So why then does he need to say black man? Isn't that a given? Last I saw, not many, if any white folks we're racking up the awards on this show.

I want to see a White Entertainment Television Award show. And, what in the hell is Beyonce wearing. Looks like a trashy House of Derreon horror show.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Yeah, because there aren't enough white people on television.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

It's not numbers, idiot.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

It isn't? What exactly is it?

Anonymous Anonymous said:

It's called racism. Blacks who promote these kind of "black only" events are just as racist as other races who promote their own. Oh, but wait, whites can't do that, can they.

Totally agree!!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

They can. It's perfectly legal. Buy a television station and call it WET--you won't go to prison. Just don't expect to rake in the dough because most people understand that there was a purpose for the creation of BET and other minority organizations--to represent the minority. Everything else was already representative of the majority.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

You can do whatever you want! Go for it! But in case you didn't notice...there were white people there. They were the minority though.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

No, it's called an event for a certain demographic. No different than having the Country Music Awards in addition to having the American Music Awards and the Grammys. It's for a specialized audience. No biggie.

Didn't Jamie Foxx say something along the lines of that white people ruined MJ, or white people stole MJ from black people??

Jamie Foxx's tribute was... ok. I'm sure there were better people to do a tribute then him.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

His tribute was racist, that's what is was. The whole concept of BET in this first place screams of racism. Disgusting.

It's Black Entertainment Television. It exists, because at one point in time there WAS a White only television station. It was called MTV.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Exactly! Not to mention the fact that almost every show on every other channel was white! I don't understand why so many white people act as if they are being victimized by things like BET. It's not like it's difficult to find programming aimed at us.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

They are not being "victimized". They are just intelligent enough to see the irony of it all. Organizations like NAACP, BET, etc. are very happy to perpetuate the idea of racism in this country, because otherwise, they'd be out of business. They are the worst kind of racists....they are hypocrites about it and have no desire to help the situation. (not that it needs any more help in my opinion...)

Anonymous Anonymous said:

If your opinion is honestly that "the situation" doesn't need "any more help", then everything else you've said makes perfect sense...

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I agree with the person who thought the situation didn;t need any additional help. They need to start helping themselves more. We can't expect Affirmative Action to keep going on forever. The opportunities are there for all; it's just not enough blacks choose to take advantage of it and continue to blame their misfortune on whites.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Molly Mae, you're joking, right? How ignorant of you.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Good Golly, Miss Molly. You say there was ONCE a need for this type of Network. First if all, there has never been a Network with a name that stated it was meant for certain races. BET blatantly does that. Not even MTV as you stated. Was it WTV? No, it was MTV. And if you are using the argument from past history, it's a sad argument. Do you really feel we still need Networks like BET? There are hundreds of black-only organizations, school and colleges. No matter what field a black person chooses to go in to, you can find a black-only association to join. Heck, we even have a Black Caucus. Maybe at one time these groups were developed out of necessity, but if you think that we still need these associations in 2009, then we live in a sad society that has made no progress in the last 50 years. Sorry, but I believe these organizations, no matter what color of skin they cater to, are nothing more than racist.

Seriously... the performance was disgusting, I agree, most people just jumped in the bandwagon that was MJ and all of a sudden they admire him for being a black man. A load of shit. I admire him for being the greatest performer of my time. Growing up he wasnt a black man, he was just a genius. im tired of people brining up the color card .

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Actually, it was all about race when Michael Jackson was growing up. That's why it was such a huge deal when he become so popular. He bridged the gap between black music and white music, which is part of why he became such an icon. His break through opened the doors for a lot of black artists.

I think Ne-yo did a great job last night. But, damn how many times did he go on stage? I was like, 'Ne-yo is performing AGAIN?' Whatever. This whole MJ tribute was last minute, so maybe that's why a lot of people didn't like the show last night. Beyonce performance in the white was so boring but I was still glad to see her perform. She looked great, especially in the outfit she had on to accept her award. Did she even know Jay-Z was performing? She had a 'WTF' look on her face. Alica Keys is pretty but her legs are awful. Ugh. Cassie looks like a complete fool and I hope to god this is not a new trend. Ciara and Megan looked great as well.

It's so funny to me how all these people lo-ooooove Michael Jackson all of a sudden but while he was alive most of them made fun of him in jokes, calling him "black man turned into a mad white woman", etc... Not just them but most of those people on TV. They all made fun of him on different shows, called him names, weirdo, wacko, etc... If only they showed him the same support while he was alive, maybe that poor man wouldn't have succombed to drugs as they report in the news.

His dad was abusive and I don't think he should be speaking at all. It seems like Michael spent his adult life getting away from the mental trama his father created and it was most likely a factor in his early demise.

This shows was a hot mess ! ..
Next time BET, don`t bother ! ..
They had Lil` Wayne on stage talking about pussy with children on the stage dancing .. then only to say "R.I.P Michael Jack" ..

WTF ? ..

They had 3 days to make ammendments, fair enough.
But, they should of put on a better, more respectful show.
Not just mention MJ`s name every now & then.

If they couldn`t pull of a good show .. then arrange a official tribute show .. carry on with the BET awards & state that they will tribute MJ soon.

They should of had:
Chris Brown
Neyo
Justin Timberlake
Omarion

Do a tribute.

BET .. your a mess.

I realize they only had 3 days to rehearse but they could have done a way better job. I mean this was Michael Jackson they were paying tribute too. I would have rather have waited and then they just do a? tribute some other time when they could have gotten it right.

Beyonce was just showing off..that's it. She should have sang Human Nature or something and been done with it.. she was just saying, "Look at my legs and my retarded costume and listen to me howl for five minutes and confuse everyone". that wasn't a tribute? it was all about her.
