Matthew Fox has shared some of his future plans with TV Guide: when ‘Lost’ ends next season, he is not doing anymore television shows.
"I am not going to do television again," Fox said. "That is not because
I think film is better than television. Not at all, in some respects
some of the best story telling is happening on television. I have done
two TV shows – Lost and Party of Five – that have
each run for six years. When you add it all up it is in the vicinity of
300 hours of television. I want to find a way to have more control over
when I am working and when I’m not. I’m looking for more flexibility."
But Matthew has good reason for feeling this way: he does have a family, remember ![]()
"I am (43) and a father of two children, and I don’t want to miss them
growing up," Fox said. "I don’t want to find myself 10 years from now
feeling like I was an absentee father because I was so focused on my
career."
After he finishes shooting ‘Lost,’ Matthew said he plans to take six months off and then hopes to do one or two films a year.
Shooting television is supposed to be a real grind compared to shooting films, schedule-wise, and Matthew’s probably earned enough money with ‘Lost’ that he can afford this.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to Matthew on the big screen or will you miss him too much on your little screen?

I think he is rather arrogant, doing a tv series may be long days but you get so much time off it is worth it and it has been very good to him making him a wealthy man. We will see when his movie career does not take off and he needs the money if he will feel the same way.
He is living in Hawaii, if he cant find time to be with his family ther, then there is something wrong with HIM.
i just don’t want him to go away from my screen …
I think people are being too hard on him. Obviously there are more difficult jobs than acting but it’s not easy either. The hours are long (8-12 hrs, 5+ days a week) and physically demanding. Lost is not Baywatch. Most movies have the same hours but take only 4-8 months to film. So time wise doing movies is easier on the homelife.
Yes I am sure people like those that work on cruise ships for 10 months at a stretch have real smpathy for him. They cant hop on a plane when they want and visit their families or have them come visit him. They work much longer hours for much less pay and have to support whole households. *shakes head* sometimes stars sound so stupid.
well maybe he just needs a good vacation and hopefully in a few years he’ll change his mind and come back again.
I LOVE YOU MATTHEWWWW !!!!
I don’t mind seeing him in either of the two screens
I can’t help but feel that he and a few of his caste mates take Lost for granted. I’m always reading quotes of how they can’t wait to be done. Come on people! You’re making big bucks not sitting at a desk all day, but making a TV show on the beaches of Hawaii!! HELLO!? BE HAPPY!! Am I wrong? I’ll gladly take their job if it’s so “miserable”.
I can understand what you are saying, but I think it goes back to his comment about not wanting to be away from his family so much and the flexibility he desires. I’m sure he’s had wonderful times doing the show and I would think he’s very grateful for the life he has, but I think he’s ready to “be done” so that he’s not filming so much.
thank you!!..I was thinking the same thing. Actors love to complain about how hard their work is. They are constantly complaining about time and family; tell me, what other job do you know of, that allows you to take six months off? What other job pays you millions to pretend to be other people? to travel and shoot on location in beautiful places? I think actors, after they achieve a certain status, do start taking their “work” for granted. When they are unknown they are willing to do and take any role.
I’ll take him wherever I can get him. Big screen, small screen…..whatever!
LOL I was just about to post the exact same comment!
He’s 43??? WOW he’s good looking! Sure he’s not 34?
His rationale is enough to make me go see his movies. What an articulate, respectful way to address the situation.
I imagine Lost has consumed a big part of his life ~ Liz ~
Love this guy! I know filming a TV show – esp. such a long-running one on a location far, far away can be quite restricting for an actor. I’m sure he will have no problem finding more work AND being a hands-on father.
