Does 'Ugly Betty' Need A Makeover?

This is reportedly what ABC is asking fans in focus groups, according to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello. Now that Betty Suarez (played by America Ferrera and the title character) has been promoted at Mode magazine, does she need a makeover to be less, well, ugly?
In particular, execs are showing test audiences two scenes from early
in the season, both featuring a newly glamorized Betty working at her
new job as Mode’s associate features editor. In one, she’s
rocking a Chanel-esque pastel pink suit; in the other, she’s sporting a
short-sleeved black dress with a ruffled V-neck. "She looks a lot
classier," says one guinea pig, "but she’s still far from perfect."
It seems the executives are wondering if audience members will consider Betty's transformation appropriate in the fourth season of the show (as part of the character's natural maturation) or if the changes are too "drastic and compromise the essence of the Everygal."
You may not be able to participate in the focus group, but you 'Ugly Betty' fans can make your opinion heard in the comments section here!
What do you think: should Betty stay the same or adopt a more sophisticated look?

Keep her ugly - isn't that the major point of the show? You couldn't call it 'ugly betty' anymore if she was suddenly turned glam.

Ugly Betty was initially a soup opera from Colombia, was a huge success. In the soup opera, Betty ends up getting a make over and being more attractive than those that made fun of her and her "style".. so thats to show them. What Salma Hayek only made it a US version, but her concept is not at all original.
There was a Dutch version a few years ago. 5 eps. a week and a total of -i believe- 150 eps. The Dutch Betty (Lotte) changed slowly, but it wasn't until the final episode that she got rid of her retainer.

I don't wanta drastic make over.
A slight enhancement in the wardrobe isn't a bad thing! However I don't think she should be straight up fashionista! Keep it in character. Also, ditch the braces, they have been on forever! Not realistic...

even a little upgrade would be good

Yeah, she should ditch the braces and get a retainer. Most people don't wear braces that long! I watched the first few episodes and loved it, then stopped watching because I didn't want to get attached, since the few times I have fallen in love with a show, it gets canceled. I'm still bitter over Wonderfalls. I cherish the 14 episodes that were made!

No, because I think her being 'ugly' is the whole concept of the show. Keep the tackiness.

Maybe not a total makeover, but I been waiting for Amanda and Mark on the show to give her some kind of upgrade to her looks.
A slight improvement in Betty's appearance will be perfect. Total makeover is also a big no for me because it would not be Betty if she is not a little bit "ugly" hehehe but I would love to see her wearing more appropriate clothing that will make her look cute.
Get rid of the braces and upgrade the glasses, but definitely a slow makeover is the way to go. I think the process of her becoming beautiful is the journey of the show. That said, she has been the same since the beginning of the show and it is time for some change.

she sould keep that part of her that makes her "Betty" ....a little make over would be good.......but one item should keep her off the mark!

I agree the braces have to go but changing Betty's style (makeup, clothes) would mean the network is giving up on the show. The point of Betty's character is to show that looks doesn't matter. If the series is going to be cancelled than do a makeover but improving her looks would ruin the message.

Some of my art students over time will learn great amounts of technique. The faces they draw begin to resemble their subjects much, much better. But their style stays true to themselves... even if it is kinda wacky. They'll prefer bright, obnoxious colours... though they learn how they work together a bit better. So they end up with better coordinated obnoxious colours. I see this with Betty.

That's what I was thinking, subtle improvement over time. Drastic sudden changes will not seem realistic

i dont watch this show but in the novela from colombia she eventually goes pretty.. just wait for it people!!!

The show is called Ugly Betty, so she's supposed to be ugly. There's no point for a makeover.
It seems like they take the clashing colors way too far but since they did, they have to tread lightly in improvement. But like others have said, braces don't usually stay on longer than a few years. A retainer will do!

i've never watched this show in any language. i know it was in spanish several times and at the end she has a transformation and they make her look pretty. so they should do that in the last season probably so the name of the show can make sense.
I think that they should do one episode atleast where Betty gets a make over (invisible braces, contacts, new clothes, and a different hairstyle) something like what she got for her first day at Mode, but less um.. well.. trailor park. It would be funny to watch everyone's reactions to a pretty Betty (though the point of the show is that even if Betty's outside is ugly, what matters is how beautiful she is on the inside). However, at the end of the episode, they should show her with her regular braces and of course her trademark red glasses and wearing her regular clothes.
When asked, she can simply say "That just wasn't me." Or something, because thats exactly something that she can say.
To say that she absolutely NEEDS a makeover at any time means that you're missing the point of the show. Although, her taste getting slightly better over time (for instance, there was one episode in Season 3 toward the end where Betty was wearing a black dress and from the front it looked amazingly fashionable, but when she turned around it had a huge bow on the back) things like that are pure Betty. Not only that, but she was even carrying a bag that was a faux something, I can't remember.. but Justin was very proud of her. So yes, fashion maturity would be okay, but lets not lose sight on the message that this show has always, and hopefully will always, be about. That everyone can be beautiful, despite what they seem like on the outside. It reminds us to look deeper within ourselves and others.
