Is This ‘Desperate Housewives’ Storyline Too Controversial?

According to E! Online’s Ted Casablanca, the writers for ‘Desperate Housewives’ are considering a storyline that has ABC worried. ABC is fearful the storyline may be too controversial.

Because it could be a spoiler (if it’s true), I’m not putting it on the front page. If you want to read more, then click on the click here to continue reading link below to find out and give your opinion.

Remember how Lynette, Felicity Huffman’s character, discovered she was pregnant with twins last season? The writers are considering having her character get an abortion, since they already have their hands full with five children.

Our Desp source tells us that Lynette is "seriously
considering it," but kept mum on the details about how the taboo topic
would be handled.

But word on Wisteria Lane is that network execs aren’t allowing Marc Cherry & Co. to even mention the word abortion during any of it. Similar to its aversion to showing cigarettes
onscreen, ABC is getting totally paranoid and forbidding any name-drop
during the scenes in which Lynette and Tom have the major discussion."

This reminded me of Kourtney Kardashian’s candid admission that she considered abortion when she first discovered she was pregnant and how it was something we still don’t talk about.

So what do you think: would this storyline offend you on ‘Desperate Housewives’ or do you think it’s realistic, given the situation?

The only reason I don’t want them to do an abortion episode is because I think they’ll make it too trite. I’m picturing 45 minutes of will she/won’t she and then she’s wheeled away at the end of the episode and we never hear about it again. I don’t think that real life abortions wrap up that easily.

I haven’t seen a show handle the topic well since that one episode of “Everwood.”

There is nothing wrong with covering this topic, the story line makes it the most responsible and logical decision.

The question is will they handle it appropriately? Or will ending a childs life be a joke on the show. Whether you are for or against it, it is a serious topic and they need to handle it correctly.

They probably wont have this on the show though, seems like this is a leaked story to drum up publicity, then suddenly they decide to go another way and never actually do this storyline. lol.

  4. Ericsgirl says:

I absolutely do NOT think they should cover this topic, because I don’t think they will do it responsibly. Certainly not in 45 minutes.

I’ll never understand a room full of women who think taking the life of a baby is responsible…or logical.

Why not adopt the children to a family who’s dreaming of having children, but can’t.

I think they should be allowed to cover this topic if they want to. While alot of people may not agree with it, it’s something that happens everyday. If they decide to have her character go through with it they could show the different emotions she’ll face afterwards.

I’m glad Kourtney Kardashian spoke up about how she seriously considered abortion. I’m sure it’s a decision alot of people consider but don’t ever talk about it in fear of how they will be judged.

  6. luckystar says:

Perhaps the woman feels it would be too difficult to go through a pregnancy and give a baby away? I understand what you are saying, but sometimes abortion is the answer. If they talk about it on the show, and it goes for more then one episode then I think it will be done responsibly. It’s an adult show, not a teen show so they should AND need to bring the subject up to make it less taboo.

  7. Annoyed says:

Does that Lynette bitch know about birth control????? WTF??????

  8. Anonymous says:

I think they should do it, and people may be offended but I mean if this tv show can talk about it, then maybe some people wouldn’t be afraid to talk about abortion/

I don’t see why they couldn’t, after all they’ve already done so many other things worse in comparison. Like suicide people obviously look down upon, but it’s a choice. So is abortion. I don’t think people should take it TOO seriously considering it’s a show. Do it.

i really dont think anyone should consider abortion just because you have too many kids. i dont think they should do it period. yes its a brave jump but i dont think they should have her do it. i think it would be fun to have her continue on with the pregnancy through out the show. just like when gabby had her kids its fun! i think with lynette it would be just the same.
dont have her abort the babies on the show…. i think they should have her keep em.

  11. saucisson says:

I think she should do it because DH is the kind of show that deals with ” real life” or at least real life issues, each and every one of us has been through one of the storyline, should it be a cheatin neighbourgh, death of a family member, difficult teens… and abortion whether you like it or not happens everyday and people being ashamed of it or misinformed only leads to more pain and heartache.
I never really liked or cared about the Kardhashians but Kourtney speaking on it was amazing. It would be a bold move to do it but if the networks aren’t ready now, they’ll never be !

  13. goldilockz says:

It’s something that people deal with in real life, why is it so crazy for it to be dealt with on television? Murder, betrayal, infidelity, and teen pregnancy were all ok in season previous.

  14. SmartLady says:

I have a solution to all the abortion controversry and” decisions”. its called USE BIRTH CONTROL!!!!!!! BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS. and if you make a “mistake” then own up and deal with it, there are millions of poeple who would like to adopt. too bad if you have to be pregnant for 9 months. Everyone just always wants to take the EASY way out.

  15. Chelle says:

They will do it. They need ratings.

  16. Moochy says:

Anyone who has ever had an abortion or is close to someone who had one knows that it is not a trivial topic and that there are much longer term emotional issues that go along with the 1 hour procedure. I don’t think the writers on DH can possibly take the time and care they would need to responsibly deal with this topic. A lot of you are giving the impression that since it’s legal and somewhat common in our society that DH should go for it. Don’t kid yourselves. You cannot deal with a topic like this one week and move onto a comedic situation the next. If you really want the show to be real then they would have to show the family going through some real turmoil making this decision, carrying out the decision and dealing with the after affects after the procedure. Obviously ABC doesn’t want to deal with the political fall-out. What network would? But, you can’t have it both ways here folks. If you truly feel the show should portray “real” life than it would have to go all the way. Are you really ready to spend 4 to 6 weeks of episodes dealing with this topic? I doubt it. DH is more of a comedy than a drama. Abortion has no place on this type of show.

  17. suffy_78 says:

women have abortions in real life and it is not something that I would shy from. If anything I think bringing that subject into DH will allow ppl to discuss it and exchange view point so bring it on!.

No, she won’t have an abortion. The characters are all so so self-centered on that show, but they are not THAT self-centered! The show would lose so many viewers, and ABC would never allow that to happen. And before anybody explodes about his post, I definitely think abortion should remain safe, available, and legal. There are plenty of selfish things people do that aren’t (and shouldn’t be) illegal, that’s for sure.

  19. Anonymous says:

Clarification: I am not saying having an abortion is always a self-centered decision. Far from it. But in Lynette’s case it would be.

I don’t think lynette would be self centred to consider abortion. We’ve seen her struggle with her growing family for years, with financial instability, the children’s behaviour, and her relationship with her husband, not to mention her cancer and the threat of it returning. By choosing to keep the child, she puts the child first; by choosing to abort, she chooses to ensure her family’s current happiness. A new-born child would mean potentially making her children unhappy by forcing upon them anothoer sibling to compete with, which could lead to more behavioural problems, not to mention room in the house. It would mean taking maternity leave, and isn’t Lynette the main earner in the family now? And then it’s another mouth to feed, more clothes to buy, and another 21 years of having someone dependent on her and Tom for money and affection and support. Just when she’s found a happy balance for her family? A baby is a big change for a family that has stuggled for so long to be stable.

And the show dealt with personal issues like Andrew’s sexuality very well, and Danielle’s teen pregnancy. And didn’t Gabrielle have an abortion first?

they wimped out, they didnt even talk about it, and it killed me. they didnt even once mention it as an option.

just because there are people that wouldnt consider abortion doesnt mean it cant be a valid storyline. i would hope people also wouldnt consider rampant murder but thats entertainment…

  23. Anonymous says:

I think they should do it, it would be brave, but true it might cause some outrage. Without sound too cliche though, you ‘cant censor real life’ so why prevent a tv show from dealing with this when it’s something very real that a lot of people go through on a daily basis? I would applaud them for it.

  24. Anonymous says:

This is reality…regardless of my opinions surrounding abortion the execs/writers should not walk on egg shells when dealing with the topic. The more it is in the public eye women will not be too ashamed/embarrassed to openly talk about abortion.

  25. busybee blogger says:

How interesting that they could talk about murder, and infidelity, and no one cares, but the word abortion is taboo.

  26. Riviera says:

    Totally agree!

  27. Manimal says:

It’s okay for someone to commit suicide, okay for someone to get electrocuted to death, okay for someone to try and hang themselves, okay for someone to try and murder someone else, okay for a car accident to happen and kill a child, but it’s not okay to even mention abortion? WTF? I don’t get it.

i think they should do it…. to bring up some TV history…. Erica Cane from all my children had an abortion and that was in the 60′s. That show and her character are still going strong.

  31. Anonymous says:

Abortion is legal in this country (as it should be). ABC needs to get with the program and not be so political.

  32. merce369 says:

It’s always been realistic. They had all sorts of murders and fatal accidents. I don’t see why stop and avoid the topic of real life.

  33. Anonymous says:

Go for it Despy Housewives. I thought it was going to be something like an incestuous relationship – that a woman who has a large and challenging family considers her options upon finding out she is pregnant with twins is not really that shocking. Big Love dealing with polygamy is more contraversial in my opinion.
