Tori Amos Thinks Lady Gaga Is A Fad

Tori Amos is at a place in her life where she can talk. She's walked the walk for so long now that if she wants to go public with a negative comment about another singer, she can. And she has some rather harsh words for Lady Gaga.
"She's what I call a meteor - singers who entertain people for a while. Hey, there's nothing wrong with that.
But then there are people like Neil Young who show up at Glastonbury 40 years into their career. And that's a very different kind of artist.
Neil Young doesn't have to get his bum out on stage!
The question is, will Lady GaGa be playing alongside Neil Young at Glastonbury in 20 years time?
She wants to entertain people. Right now, half the world is depressed and they need to be entertained. So her timing's perfect."
And believe it or not, Tori has a few good things to say about Britney Spears.
"For me, the best thing that happened is that I didn't have success like my father wanted me to when I was 14-years-old and I was playing clubs," she said.
"Thank God it didn't happen for me at that time. I probably wouldn't be talking to you if it had. I think it's really tough on teenagers when they have that kind of success.
"But you have to acknowledge Britney's discipline right now - being a mum and being out on the road. When you do that year-in, year-out since you were a teenager, it can become overwhelming."
Is Tori right about Lady Gaga?

WHO IS TORI AMOS???!! Caps, I know. I just want to convey my confusion. I'm back and I'm clad in plaid :)
You moron.
she 's not a moron ! she just doesn't know who she is
Hence she's a moron when it comes to being musically cultured.

you should listen to some of Tori's stuff... fantastic. She's been around forever.
I've never read any of Tori's quotes before this but for some reason i've always thought of her as a class act, but man, this completely shatters that image for me. She may be an established artist but ripping on another artist (especially someone thats just starting out) is so uncool and just makes her sound like a complete bitch.
Tori is right. She's not trying to be a *itch, she's just being honest
I would say she is right. I can't see Gaga being around in 20 yrs time. I would like to be wrong... Oh well, someone has to replace Madonna..
The same thing was said about Madonna years ago, I recall a music producer at the time saying "Madonna is just a fad"........look at her now. Maybe Tori needs the attention, I think she has a new album coming out? She praises Britney like she is attempting something so incredible. There are plenty of single mothers that work with no help from nannies.
That is a wig, right? Looks terrible. Total hack job on the bangs.
I don't like to hear artists criticize each others work in public. Tacky. She's trying to be relevant, but really she's just alienating herself from all GaGa's fans. Not smart.

I really don't think she gives a damn about alienating herself from Gaga fans!!!! Tori is well established with loyal fans anyway.
Thank God Neil Young doesn't show his bum on stage!!
I have to agree with Tori, I think Lady GaGa is a fad and will fade with time. She is just a little to out of the norm IMO to have a long standing.

she's right... and like she said, there's nothing wrong with being the entertainment of the moment... why does everyone take that as talking smack? she didn't say that lady googoo sucked. she just said she probably won't go the distance.
Fad??? Who cares? CaCa is so ugly she has to wear hair in her face so you will look at the rest of her. She has great legs, and wears stripper costumes (she IS a former stripper), but that's about it. Tori's hair in this pic is horrific, yet going on Late Night w/Letterman. She too needs a stylist!!! Now if Tori had said CaCa is a F*g instead of fad... that would have been newsworthy. Again... Who cares about either one of them???
I heard she got her stripper nickname, Lady GaGa, from the sound she makes while working the "pole." Too funny!
Most pop stars burn brightly and fade fast. It goes with the job, Whether Lady GaGa bucks that trend who knows. Probably not but then who would have guessed Madonna or Britney Spears would be still around now.

She's spot on about lady gaga.... Can't wait for her 'fad' to be over rover.

Gaga will be a fad if she doesnt change her image/style/music over time. If she just keeps doing the same thing over and over for 20 years, yeah, thats not going to work.
This BARELY seemed like a slam, even slamming somone it seemed really not very harsh.

I love Tori and I think she's right about Gaga, however, Tori looks a few cans short of a six-pack.
LESBO. what does she know about being a pop star---her only audience is dykes like herself lol

And Gaga is a hermaphrodite. Your point would be what?
You're calling Tori a lesbo? pffft..... that's a compliment.

What is wrong with her face???

She is so right!
Well personally I've never even heard a Tori Amos song in my life...I hear the lesbian love her though. Go lilithfair!
I don't like Tori Amos OR Lady Gaga. I respect Tori as an artist and I acknowledge that Lady GG is talented, but unfortunately she chooses to dumb down her talents and play up her skank image. Which is precisely what Tori is saying. She didn't say that Lady GG is talentless, she merely said that her image, her music, is nothing more than a fad that will last only as long as the Jonas Bros' career. Right now, the music industry is at its rock bottom, the economy is in turmoil, we've got two wars going on at the moment, so Lady GG's music helps fill the void of people who desperately need to be entertained, to forget about their problems, quality be damned. But times like these won't last forever, and the music industry is an ever-changing landscape, so Gaga will have a very tough time trying to make it past the one-hit wonder phase with her disposable music. Unless she completely remodels her music and image and becomes a serious artist, I doubt she will still be talked about years later, except when people will try to remember the greatest fads of 2009. I understand what Amos is saying, which is really rare, since most of the time she talks and I'm like "WTF is she talking about?" But I agree with her on this one. I don't think she intended it as diss. Well, if someone asked her about Gaga, then there was nothing wrong with her answer. But if she brought her up out of nowhere, then I must say that she must be really lame to make Lady Gaga the topic of a conversation.
And if you want to listen to music that has deep, meaningful lyrics and that is highly entertaining at the same time, I highly recommend Muse. They will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 14, and no, they're not a new band. They've been around for 10 years, are from the UK and while they're very popular in their homebase and other countries, they're very underrated here. Hopefully all that will change on September 14. They had a song featured in Twilight.
I adore Tori Amos. She has always been my favorite artist & will continue to be, but I've also fallen musically in love with Gaga too. Everyone has a right to express their true opinions, and I'm glad Tori continues to do so, but I don't agree with what she said. Lady Gaga is extremely talented and interesting and I think her appeal and talent will allow for continued success and a strong fan following, like Tori has had. Only time will tell, but Gaga isn't new to the music world, even if the world at large has only recently begun to recognize her as an artist. Love and best wishes to both of these lovely, talented artists. xx

Not to waste more space, but sorry for the double post above - me and CAPTCHAs don't get along.
I'm surprised at Amos' comment as well. I only found this page by googling the two names together. Because that's who I equate her to, and I'm not even a huge Tori Amos fan. I find Gaga's actual vocals to be so stunning - I think of Amos when I hear her. And although the samples and studio centered beats may sound similar, Gaga is no flimsy floozy Britney spears. Not even a comparison. I think Gaga is a musician's musician, outstandingly (OUTSTANDINGLY) talented, and she'll be here many years from now.
I think tori's comments were made before gaga started showing her true talents......on the piano singing live. I love her album, but my jaw dropped the first time i heard her acoustic version of poker face....she may actually be a better singer than tori......
Tori Amos rules forever!!!!
I've followed Tori Amos since her very first single. She's always been a great talent but has fallen off the map for a while now. I think her remarks on Lady GaGa smack of arrogance, envy and annoyance that another strong vocalist who can play the hell out of a piano is now on the scene and doing quite well for herself while barely out of the starting gate of her youth. Lady Gaga is very intelligent when it comes to visionary artistry as well as marketing that artistry. Those that trash talk her probably don't take to any edgy type and prefer more generic, homogenized music that comes in some bland, wholesome package (yawn). I hope Lady GaGa continues to make music and eye-popping visuals that keep her on the mainstream's edge! I find it ironic that Tori of all artists would be talking about people being depressed right now and needing entertainment. Tori's music is 85% (if not more) based on melancholic, semi-depressive content. If we were really all that depressed we'd be warbling along with a Tori track while contemplating the use of the razor blade or the prescription pills! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Tori's talent but I'm disappointed that she of all people would try to discount a fellow new/odd artist when she's trying to start out in this biz. Tori was once the new oddball on the block a couple of decades ago lest she forget. I remember a pic in Tori's CD jacket (Boys for Pele) of her nursing a baby piglet... breast out and all! Artists in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!!
Here's the real deal, from my perspective -- Amos missed this call by light years. The misguided comparison to Young pretty much demonstrates how little Amos understands Gaga's objectives.
Amos is a musician first, entertainer second -- and I respect the hell out of her lyrical and vocal talents.
Gaga is a combination of the two, but leaning substantially more on the entertainer side. Her voice is, in my humble opinion, every bit as good as Tori's, but her piano playing is comparatively lacking and the lyrics she utilizes (be they written by her or somebody else) are pretty marginal. All that is moot, however, because Gaga has carved out a niche for herself with far better staying power than the two-day pop crowd, does extremely well by use and abuse of fashion principles, knows how to entertain, and has her **** together when it comes to personal business.
Could Gaga be gone within a few years? It's quite possible, but I'd be quite careful in dismissing her as another "meteor."

I'm dissapointed with Tori. What the hell is her problem. At least lady Gaga hasn't been releasing boring, bland concept albums since 2001!
Gee, sorry, Tori, for wanting to be entertained. Yeah, listening to music is supposed to be work!
