Meryl Streep Thought Mashed Potatoes Came In A Box

Funniest quote ever!

Meryl Streep didn’t know what mashed potatoes were as a child.
The actress – who plays celebrated TV chef Julia Childs in new movie ‘Julie and Julia‘ – admits her upbringing was filled with convenience foods and she was left bemused when she saw her neighbor cooking one day.
She said:

“I remember when I was 10 years old, going to a neighbor’s house and she and her mother were sitting at the kitchen table with what looked like tennis balls and I asked what they were doing. She told me they were making mashed potatoes and I said, ‘What do you mean? Mashed potatoes come in a box!’ ”

LOLOLOLOL!!

Meryl – who has been married to sculptor Don Gummer for 30 years -admits her culinary skills have improved over time, but she remains unrepentant if she ever gets a dish wrong.
She explained:

“My husband is amazing because he just likes everything I make. There’s nothing better than when you are a little disappointed in what you’ve tried that he doesn’t notice that it didn’t turn out so good.

“But I don’t make excuses. That’s another thing Julia taught me – don’t apologize, because it always makes it taste worse. If they didn’t notice it was bad, then shut up!”

I absolutely do that and it’s a terrible TERRIBLE habit. Good tip Meryl!

I love her! She’s such a legend. My mother always had me help out since I was little in the kitchen. It’s something that I’ve been passing down to my daughter and she loves it. She can make some mean pancakes already..and she’s 3!! :)

That’s so sweet. The last time I tried to enlist my son’s help, he tried to fling the flour all around the kitchen.

I love Meryl Streep too! She can do no wrong :) I was just saying how you never hear from her until she comes out with a movie, and then she does tons of interviews. She keeps a low profile, away from the paparazzi, and just ries to live a normal life. Plus, she and her hubby have been married for 30 yrs and he’s a sculptor! awesome! ***annie***

    How is this any news??

  7. lara jane says:

    I’m guessing it’s because she did a movie based on a world-famous cook? ;)

My mom was the same way, all about the Hamburger Helper (vomit) and Rice-a-Roni. We did have “real” mashed potatoes but hers were always super lumpy. (choke)

I’m not as good a cook as my mother-in-law (or her mother-in-law, even better!) but I’m not bad. And lucky for me, I married the least picky eater on the planet, and he’s always so appreciative of everything I cook.

  9. Ariel says:

Lucky you! I dated a boy who had no qualms telling me that something I made wasn’t as good as the dish his mom made. Surprisingly, I didn’t stay with him very long.

I’m in the same boat as she is! I didn’t realize how many things could be made from scratch until I was well into adulthood.

My grandmother and great-grandmother made everything from scratch and I’m glad that I was exposed to that. It taught me a lot.

She really needs to do something with her sense of style. She never wears anything nice. Great actress though.

  13. YAYI says:

    I almost forgot Lara lol.

Easy to forget since it’s mentioned right there at the beginning of the post.
