Ellen DeGeneres Talks To Ryan Seacrest About American Idol Position

NATURALLY, Ellen Degeneres' first interview went to Ryan Seacrest right? This is the first season that I am actually really excited about. I can't wait to see how the show will change now that Ellen is on board.

Here are a few excerpts from Ellen's interview:

On her qualifications for being a judge:

"The people are the ones that choose the American Idol. Ultimately it doesn't come down to some expert in the music industry, it comes down to everybody at home that says 'that's the person I relate to, that's the person that I'm going to buy music from'."

On her judging style:

"I'm not going to be mean, I hate when Simon [Cowell] is that mean. You can be constructive and criticize somebody that's helpful instead of mean spirited."

On Paula Abdul's departure:

"I hope Paula [Abdul] is okay with it. I don't want anybody to think I took Paula's job away. I feel like she was gone and then everybody was looking for somebody else, then I stepped in. I certainly don't want to be that person that is the evil taking Paula's job away."

Some are saying the show "jumped the shark" with this addition. Do you agree?

From the Wiki: "Jumping the shark is a colloquialism coined by Jon Hein and used by TV critics and fans to denote the point in a television program's history where the plot veers off into absurd story lines or out-of-the-ordinary characterizations. This usually corresponds to the point where a show with falling ratings apparently becomes more desperate to draw in viewers. In the process of undergoing these changes, the TV or movie series loses its original appeal. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak." In Happy Days, the Fonz literally jumped over a shark on water skis. That's generally the point that the series is believed to have started to go down hill. That's where it came from, initially.

'Jumped the Shark' means when a series has run for a period of time with great success, and then makes a change or changes which irrevicably changes the popularity of the show where it becomes almost a cartoon of itself. The term originated in the series 'Happy Days' where the Fonz got on waterskies and jumped a shark in the ocean. It was a really stupid episdode and most people said the series never recovered after that.

I think she'll be great on there. She's funny and compassionate and yeah.. I think I might actually watch a few of the shows now. I wonder how she'll deal with Simon and how mean he is to people, though. She seems pretty sensitive but I suppose she DOES have thick skin being in that business.

I, as a musician, don’t feel she, Ellen, is a good replacement for Paula.

love Ellen, but I do not think she is right for this show. She has too much of a bleeding heart and the music indusrty is brutal. I also would like to see her make comments without trying to add a joke in each time. She was a judge on So you Think You Can Dance over the summer and every critique has some humor in it- got old fast.

The appeal was that you had professional people judging new talent. I thought the best choice would have been Shania Twain. Ellen has no experience to be judging singers. The whole point of audience involvement was to have the amatures second guess the professionals. I think now there is no need for audience involvement. This will detract from the show. Big thumbs down for Ellen.

Ditto - Maybe not Shania Twain for me, but someone well known in the MUSIC industry, not the COMEDY industry. I liked the Idea of Victoria Beckham, or maybe Janet Jackson.

I know Ellen is very personable and funny but AI will not be the same without Paula.
