Jay Z Says Lil' Mama Pulled A Kanye During The MTV Video Music Awards

While sitting down with Hot 97's Angie Martinez, Jay-Z talked about how upset he was when Lil' Mama rushed the stage during his performance on the MTV VMA's earlier this month.
“I would never do that. I would never have the nerve to do that. We go to rehearsals, we do run-throughs, and we work really hard on the performance to put on a show for people. And to interrupt that moment for us, I don’t think that was the right thing to do.
I actually thought it was the equivalent of what Kanye did to Taylor Swift but nobody really talked about that because I’m not a lil sweet girl from middle America.”
“I’m cool with her being excited and all that, but you also have to understand people put in work to make that performance happen–the planning of it, there's a lot of planning that went into that performance. To disrupt that is out of line.”
“I was a little angry–but what imma do, fight Lil Mama?”
What do you think about what happened? Is it equivalent to what happened between Taylor Swift and Kanye West?

I think its the same thing. A person is up on stage trying to do what they're supposed to do (a performance or a speech for a win), and somebody else rudely jumps in because they're not the center of attention.
But wait, how hypocritical is that? He was defending Kayne for doing it, but "lil mama" is in the wrong?
12640 points
glad it happened to him for the exact reason that he defended Kayne
143945 points
Hell yeah!
148095 points
Exactly! Wasn't HE the one saying that they were blowing this whole Kayne thing out of proportion and it's not like he had killed someone. What a hypocrite..
159500 points
yeah exactly. and now he's whining that no one made it such a big for him. so stupid.
Hell, hell, yeah!!

when i was watching the show, i noticed it, and i was suprised it wasnt talked about more after. def not on the level on what happened to taylor, but not right non the less.

I agree totally with what he said. She should have never tried that attention seeking stunt and made herself look foolish. It's a shame they have to stoop to such levels for attention
Jay did not defend what Kanye did...in fact he explicitly stated that while he would defend Kanye's right to his opinion, he thought that what he did when he interrupted Taylor Swift was wrong, and rude...so how is he being hypocritical again??????
He DID defend Kanye, and he minimized his behavior, go look up the quote. What Lil Mama did was wrong too, just not on the same scale as Kanye, but they were both wrong and should be fined and then ignored.
Hell I'm a step ahead.....I've been ignoring Kanye for a WHILE now.

Totally
Why doesn't he just come right out and say it? No one cares because he's black. It's what he wanted to say. And he's right. But it isn't because he's black. It's because he's Jay-Z and no one in America could give a flying pete what happens during his mediocre and lackluster performances.

I don't think it's so much because he's black, though that plays a part, but it was an older black, much more physically imposing man whose job is being a rapper being interrupted by a younger black rapper/dancer.
Taylor Swift, a young, white, extremely polite and generous female country singer was interrupted by a notoriously big headed black rapper. I think the biggest difference is the gender and profession. But yes, race did play a part, I'm sure. Since it was rapper to rapper with Jay-Z and Lil Mama, it's not being quite as blown up. My opinion anyway.
I agree.
I agree

i highly doubt it had anything to do with race, Kanye picked on a well mannered girl and he acted like a bully, he would have never done that to Pink, Gwen Steffany, Madonna or any female that would kick his ass on stage. he picked on someone that in no way are in the same level. Kanye is a coward. Jay Z in the other hand is the bigger fish in this case and can handle it.

I agree. People love to pull the race card on everything.

Manimal I see what your saying but.
This news irked me today bc I recall jay z stating that what kanye did wasn’t so bad, bc its not like he killed someone or something like that. But talentless lil mama ( who for some unexplainable reason was cast for Americas best dance crew judge ??? – I stopped watching that show bc she tried being all gangsta and acting like she knew what she was talking about, lol okay, got that off my chest) jumped on stage just to pose with jayz and that got his lil panties in a twist?
No honestly I don’t think color has to do with it. Jayz is low for even thinking it has to do something with race. Kanye basically told a teenage girl who one her first award that she didn’t deserve it. while lil mama jumped on stage pissing off a grown ass man, just so she can pose with them. There is a huge difference, jay z is being a lil b1tch for acting like such a thug.

Yeah! :o)

I totally agree with Jay on this one. Like i said she could of been exicted and appreciative from her seat. There was no need to jump up there and join something she wasn't part of.
35035 points
manimal - well said, i totally agree.
I think JayZ is a baby and an idiot. He defends Kanye but still has the nerve to whine about this? Loooooserrr!!
18807 points
First off, unless Lil Mama interupted his acceptance speech for winning an award it isn't quite the same. I do agree she shouldn't have done it, and I don't understand why no one has called her on it, or asked exactly why she felt the need to do that. Maybe it is time for MTV to up their security, or change their format--or even better--cancel this award show, cause they have nothing to do with the music industry any longer.
JayZ is a crybaby and his music is awful. Go home and cry to Beyonce.
63918 points
Yeah I thought that was a bit odd of her to rush the stage. Maybe she's just bitter of the fact that she never gets to be on stage any more and is basically a musical failure.
4705 points
Who the f*ck is Lil Mama? Maybe THAT'S why it didn't get any coverage? I had no idea this happened until I read this. And while it's still incredibly rude, it's not at all the same as Kanye and Taylor Swift.
57942 points
I was thinking the same thing. Who is Lil Mama? I watched the entire show and I didn't even notice this. I guess I thought it was all part of the production. Maybe Jay-Z should have just pushed her off the stage.
69013 points
She did give a few a statements about it. One was that she was just so overcome and excited that she ran up there. insert rolling eyes here. LOL I thought it was disrespectful. I don't think a lot of people realized what was going on - it was so random. I had no clue who the person was until I read it online the next day. I only know she did a remix of Girlfriend with Avril Lavigne but that's all I know about her.. LOL
......and here we go with the race card once again.....good job jay-z...
6710 points
Hey Idaho, he didn’t say anything about race, someone else did on the post above… can a black man say anything without being scrutinized?
It's all bad...that was very rude of her!
Both she and Kanye wanted attention...and they got it!
I'm still rolling at "what am I'm a do...fight Lil Mama?"
You shooed her away while she was on stage...I think that was plenty enough, I know it was hysterical to me.
But it takes more than passion and nerve to interrupt a speech or performance...both were completely arrogant and out of line.
people need some home training.
Like people are gonna stop buying Kanye's music! Even Chris Brown will still be selling music! People go angry but the thing is that they don't care at al! I know I would still be listening to Kanye and Chris Bown's music because I don't give a rat's ass about their personal lives! As long as they keep doing good music, I'll keep buy. For Taylor Swift who cares? She is still alin-ve right? I am pretty sure she took advantage of what happened to her so she could raise her cd's sales! For that, I didn't even feel sorry for her! She was n't raped or beaten up like Rihanna so she can go and cry a river for all I care!

it's not the same thing at all, and has nothing to do with race. unless this lil mama's intention in getting up on stage was to tell jay z he didn't deserve to win or the performance equivalent, we can't even compare them. she was incredibly rude, like kanye, but that's where the similarity ends. also, jay z is a grown man... grow up already. noone cares about this because it did nothing to ruin his moment. what kanye did to taylor swift would have been rude if she was white, black, green or purple.
Taylor Swift sucks.
Kanye: rude, but true.
When the hell did Jay-Z ever mention RACE? BUT I will make it about race.
Stupid idiots. I doubt any of you who are soooo upset that Taylor Swift was interrupted would have given a shit if ...I don't know...Jordin Sparks or some young hispanic was interrupted by Kanye West. She's a sweet lil' girl but she's not a lilly white one so you don't care as much. Admit it.
And I'm WHITE. No more beating around the bush.
143945 points
The fact is, Kanye and Lil Mama were rude and obnoxious and should have had enough respect and courtesy to sit their asses in their seats, period.
20 points
I really don't think it matters that Taylor is white, I personally think Kayne was totally way way out of line, no matter who's speech he interupted.
Seems the people mentioned who are acting this way are Black. Has a white person ever done this? If they did I'll bet they had no support for their actions. Seems to be a lack of knowing the proper way to act.
i am so sick of people playing the race card period. i dont care what color your skin is..people are people..but if we are to be treated like equals we ALL need to start acting like equals. Why is it ok for black people to have it all and continue to play the race card? They have their own history month, their own tv channel, their own political group...if a white person had that..we would be racist. My best friend is black...get off it..seriously....if we keep living in the past, the world will never move on.
As for Jay-z i find him a bit hypocritical. First defending what Kayne and now trying to make his a big deal. Don't sit there and say it was a big deal just because she was white..if a white person had done this, black people would be all over it..and I guarentee there would have been a fine envolved... he got away with posting an apology on the website to Taylor...she has a lot of class handling this situation the way she did and i respect her even more for that.
520 points
most definitely it was. i think it was worse because i still don't believe that there was not something in the sorts planned before. he did it to justice in Europe.
Yea.............it's not the same.....sorry jay z. Just shut up and let your woman have the spotlight for a little while - jealous ass!
Maybe Lil Mama was drunk, too.
Lil Mama, Imma let you finish interrupting Jay Z, but Kanye West had the best interruption EVER....
186497 points
She had no right interrupting cuz if it was her she would not appreciate it.

I didn't see it, but find it typical of his comment:
"I actually thought it was the equivalent of what Kanye did to Taylor Swift but nobody really talked about that because I’m not a lil sweet girl from middle America.”
I'm suprised he didn't say "because I'm black" (and before you go hating on me NO I am not racist in the slightest but am tired of all this 'we are black, and power to black women etc" arn't well all just HUMAN
143945 points
Here, here!

Sure it was inappropriate for lil mama to run up there like that but its not like she took the mic out of his hands and start rapping. There's no comparison between lil mama and kanye.
LOL I thought the whole thing was part of the performance. Like they planned for Lil Mama to jump up at the end and pose. I was like ok interesting but why her? Anyway, I don't think it is anything compared to the Kanye and Taylor situation. With Kanye it is always about race. I find Jay-z's "because I’m not a lil sweet girl from middle America” comment racist and he sounds childish complaining about Lil mama.

Wow...what could have been a light-hearted discussion has turned into a nasty venting board. I come to 'INO' because Vera keeps it clean, sweet and never has a bad word to say about anyone. Secondly, you're tired of the "we are black, and power to black women etc" Are you kidding me?!? Until we all treat each other like human begings, groups that feel like outcasts find ways to lift themselves up. So are you saying giving yourself confidence is wrong? i dont think he was making it a race thing. i think he was just saying that hes an ex drug dealer rapper, not a young, cute, sweet girl. any race could have fit into that statement. i do think that lil mama was just as wrong as kanye. people need to learn how to stay in their seats.
