Contrary to your belief, it is a NY thing. I know people from all walks of life here in NYC an no one, unless they are not born and raised here, says, “in line”, we say, “on line”. Just like we say soda and not pop or a hero instead of a hogie or grinder or sneakers instead of tennis shoes. Tennis shoes, that one always gets me. LOL!
