Shakira Says Make The Most Of What You've Got

Shakira Says Make The Most Of What You've Got

Shakira said she didn't always look as good as she does now in her thirties. And yes, she, too, has suffered from bouts of insecurities about her looks.

"As a teenager I was plump but my appearance wasn't so important at that time. I focused much more on my music and song writing.

"I know that image in this profession is a matter of opinion. I think the external appearance in show business is important and over the years I've discovered my assets. Honestly, I've never seen myself as a goddess or sex symbol."

"We all have our insecurities but I used to have more of those days in my twenties. I found nothing satisfied me and I just wanted to hide from the world.

"You should always make the most of what you’ve got and I think I've tried my entire life to figure it out.

"I wouldn't have made a video like 'She Wolf' when I was younger, that's for sure."

There's that bit again about feeling less confident in her twenties... that seems to be a theme for today! I definitely think adolescence is over-rated; do you think the twenties are, too?

Eeh, I'm in my 20s, but I haven't really faced any major problems.. yet. Maybe it's my upbringing. My parents always told me to follow my own path. That's probably why I don't compare myself to "the people in the magazines" or anyone else. It's really great for your self confidence. I think I'm the greatest person on the planet :P

LOL. Good for you KissKiss! I like her and I use to listen to her WAY back in the day in her 20's and she really DID look completely different.

I've never been insecure or cared what people thought of me. I did enjoy my twenties more than my teens, though, because that's when I really started to figure out who I am and what I want. I guess my thirties are for really going after it??? :)

I love her dress!!! But I think most people start getting more secure in their thirties. They realize what other people think actually doesn't matter and you can just be you. I wish more people would realize that earlier on in life...

well I can see why people would be so insecure when you're a teenager...your body is going through major changes, you're gaining weight, growing breast, getting period, mood swings that comes out of no where, getting zits, wearing braces, your hair is greasy from all the sh!t we put in our hair, our makeup looks ridiculous because we're just experimenting....you're no longer cute. we all feel ugly and fat.....i think it's the hormones and it doesn't help when girls are catty and bitchy and mean to each other....and then there's our parents who criticize us...they way we look, the way we dress.....sigh....thank god I'm out of my teens.

I agree with her totally, as you get older you get more perspective on what really matters and what doesn't and become much more confident in your own strenths, and much more forgiving of your weaknesses.

If she doesn't see herself as a "sex object", then why is she constantly gyrating and hip thrusting.

I completely agree with your teens AND 20's being overrated. I will be turning 30 in just a few weeks, and I FINALLY feel comfortable in my own skin. When I walk out the door for a night out, I look in the mirror and ask myself if I think I look my best. Back in the day, I would look in the mirror and ask myself if everyone else would think I looked my best.

I love how once a 'woman is secure' its means she will show and tell us all by prancing around naked. How inspiring and groundbreaking. All she does is shove 'sex' in peoples faces so I would have to say she is a hypocrite.
