Schwarzenegger Signs Tougher Paparazzi Law

Starting January of 2010, a new law will take place making it harder for media outlets to use paparazzi photos that invade celebrities' privacy. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill this week and is excited about the change.
A statement issued Monday says the former “Terminator” star had signed a number of bills, including the amendment to a decade-old law that allows fines against paparazzi who illegally or offensively take photos or recordings.
The amendment permits lawsuits against media outlets that pay for and make first use of material they knew was improperly obtained.
It's a start! The next thing they should do is work on getting a certain amount of space forced between a photographer and a celebrity. Those crowds can be very intimidating - especially when children are involved.
What do you think about the new law?

Yeah. It is about time and I agree that a law is needed to keep the paparazzi out of the stars face and at a safe distance. I am afraid there will be another Princess Diana "incident".

It's about time! Like a lot of other people, I enjoy reading celebrity news on this blog and at People but I hate the invasiveness of the paps. When celebs pose on the red carpet, that's part of their job. If they willingly pose for photos by themselves or with their kids, again their choice. But when they can't go out on their patio because paps are invading their privacy or they can't take their kids to the ice-cream shop without being mobbed by paps, that's over the line. Way to go, Arnold!

I totally agree with what you said. I think paps should stay at least 100 feet away from private residences, heck they should just stay 100 feet away regardless, unless it's an official event and the paps have been invited to attend to take pictures.

I agree.

I agree with Nyx but the jargon seems really open to interpretation (at least from the statement above). Who deems what is offensive or improper, you know? They'll use any excuse, loophole, rationalizing, whatever, to make their money.
I dont really feel bad for most of them becuase it seems like they crave the attention and some even call the paps themselves and inform them of were they are. Most of the time celebs who choose not be photographed arent, becuase they stay away from obvious places.
INO, I hope you're self-aware enough to realize that you, too, frequently purchase and post photographs of celebrities who are being harassed and followed too closely (specifically pictures involving children- you love posting those). I hope this forces you to reconsider posting pictures of celebrities that are clearly being stalked by crazed paparazzi. This content makes up the majority of photos seen on this and other celeb gossip sites.
I agree its a start, some of the pics paps obtain are wrong, pictures in a stars backyard or at their kids school those are wrong and should be banned all together. Celebrities are fair game when they go to place like The Ivy, Katsua, or any place they know the photogs camp out.
Laws not strong enough, look at what happened to Nicole Ritchie, thank God she did not have the kids in the car. I also think they should not be allowed near kids schools.
I think it's really funny that everyone's like "Oh, it's about time!" Yet, you buy it and feed on it through websites like this. I'm not insulting anyone, I just find it interesting.

There is nothing wrong with taking a photo of a celebrity, however, a certain amount of distance should be placed between the paps and the celebs. No one should feel in danger or be harassed by paps trying to gain, "the money shot". Its simply about respect and consideration for another person.

Something definitely needs to be done especially when they are with their kids. There should be some rules, some boundaries. I know some ask for the attention, even when they "complain" about it. They say Princess Diana was trying to get away from the paps the night she was killed.

I think its a step in the right direction, Vera. I agree with everything you've posted.
I think it's a really good idea. It's not fair to have someone watching you and taking pictures of you all the time. I'm glad they finally get some sort of privacy. :)

I just hope that the law being passed will actually help stop some of the madness.

There is always someone who likes to break the rules...no matter how strict a law they pass there will be someone who will plead ignorance or find an excuse to point his high definition zoom lens where it shouldn't be pointing.
