Melissa Rycroft Latest Celebrity To Have The Swine Flu

Melissa Rycroft, the former Bachelor star, has confirmed to US Weekly magazine that she is just getting over a bout of the “swine” flu (aka the H1N1 virus).

“I am indeed recovering from a bout of the H1N1 flu virus. Like most people who become infected, I thought I had a mild case of the common flu, but when my symptoms exacerbated, I immediately went to the hospital where I was diagnosed with H1N1 and given the proper medications to cure the infection.”

Melissa also said that fiance Tye Strickland’s mother (who is a nurse) gave her some sound advice of “getting checkups and get better.”

“I want to stress to people how easy it is to battle this flu when you take the proper steps such as seeking the care of a doctor,” she tells Us. “I’m a clear case that by paying diligent attention to your health, it’s easy to overcome this illness and be healthy again.”

It’s really running rampant all over the country. I’m guessing that schools being back in session has a lot to do with the more rapid spreading in the last month or so?

    That sucks.

  2. bgduckie_01 says:

yeah, plus its that time that everyone has the flu and we dont know if we have a regular flu or the dumb swine flu. i just read that a tmz guy has it too. its running around like crazy.

Sigh. It’s just a flu, folks. People are hospitalized every year for the regular old flu. We’re just paying more attention to this one. This one is generally only worse for people who already have health problems, or have compromised immune systems (the very young, elderly, and pregnant). Plus, btw, it’s a virus, not an infection. If it was an infection, people could just take antibiotics and get better.

  4. kimmytoo says:

thousands of people die a year from the “regular old flu”

Happy I’m not the only one who was puzzled by the phrase “infection”! The flu is a virus, not a bacterial infection. I certainly encourage people who are sick to go to the doctor. Tamiflu is an effective treatment for all flu (including swin), and often the sooner it’s proscribed the more effective it is.

However, I think her statement was a bit over the top. She makes it sound like she received early intervention drugs for leprosy or something.

  6. Monica says:

THANK YOU! I was thinking the EXACT same thing. There ARE no medications for viruses, and you cannot CURE a virus. So ignorant!

  7. Anonymous says:

    What is she talking about?

The proper medications? There are none.
Cure the infection? It’s a virus.

They are turning people (except elderly and the very young) away at our local clinic because they say just go home and drink fluids and ride it out.

  8. Monica says:

That’s really sad. :( Thanks for asking if I was OK!

  9. Helen says:

Tell that to the 31 families that lost somebody in my country, including 3 pregnant women and their babies. If the patient has asthma, diabetes or obesity it’s more likely they’ll perish, that could be anybody from any age. It’s really serious, that’s why I was worried for you when u said you had it. I’m glad you’re OK.

  10. maiah912 says:

    Agreed!

  11. DonnaJ says:

I hate the flu, period…swine or otherwise, it all sucks.

  12. Helen says:

It’s a deadly disease if untreated, I’m glad she’s talking about it and motivating people to seek medical care.

  13. Monica says:

It’s not necessarily deadly if it’s untreated. Only very week people will die from it, such as the very young or the very old. All the typical person needs is lots of fluids, rest, and pain killers for those body aches. I just had it last week.

  14. Anonymous says:

she is NOT a celebrity!!! STOP giving her that status…he was on a “reality” tv show and got dumped…get over it and move on…. plenty of people everywhere are getting the swine flu…glad she is feeling better…but damn…who cares!

  15. mjam623 says:

That’s my point…nobody pays attention to people with the “regular old flu”. H1N1 is just getting more press

  16. Katie Bee says:

I’m amazed that this is “news”.

  17. Monica says:

I had it a week and a half ago. I couldn’t do anything for a week. Luckily I got a doctor’s note so I could be excused from an exam and some classes.

  18. Helen says:

Really? I hope you’re feeling better!

  19. Monica says:

    Thanks!! I am! :) Just a lingering annoying cough…

  20. Keli says:

    So she’s a celebrity now…

I guess I should have auditioned for For the Love of Ray J…

And I think that people are too quick to say “Swine Flu”…most people are being mis-diagnosed, or assuming they have the swine flu if they have the symptoms.
